Woke up to a wet, windy, 34 degree morning here in Cincinnati, and had an 11 mile run scheduled.  What helped get me out the door was John Bingham's quote about having the courage to start.  Once I was a couple miles into it, it wasn't so bad.

Bryan, good luck with the HM.

Okie dokie... first time to get out on the "new" bike... and like Irishod... had mid 30's at 7:00 am here in Atlanta. Made me realize i am missing some more $$$$ equipment.. ha.

Road the Silver Comet, and did a 10.5 mile out and back... Soooo..  this morning was longest distance and longest time for me so far.  Now waiting for new aches and pains from arms, shoulders, legs and all the pieces that aren't used to "biking".

I hope my tennis partner doesn't hold it against me if i don't move so well tomorrow.

Happy Weekend All.

Monte

Way to go John and Monte for getting out there and getting the job done. I ran 4 miles with my dog. Not only is it a cardio workout but also an upper body one as I am either pulling her back or dragging her along. Now we are tri bike shopping. So many things to think about.

Nice everybody. Great job. The most valuable workout is the one that is the toughest. A run in the rain or on a nasty cold day is so WORTH it. You will even be amazed that you did it. Everyone will be in awe of you. Proper clothing and layering is the key in any weather. I did a HIM in a storm in 2009. I mean STORM. Rain was pelting me on the swim. I knew if I could do that - I could do anything. Also - ask MAV about how it felt getting hailed on during the bike at IMAZ.

Half marathon - well....it got done. You have all heard of a PR or PB - that's a personal record or a personal best. Mine was a PW - personal worst. I wasn't expecting a PR but I wasn't expecting what I got either. I am not really trained right now so that is one reason/excuse. I stopped 3 times to pee - thought of y'all every time and I stopped 3-4 times to stretch. My hip flexors/psoas were acting up. There is some ART - Active Release Therapy in my future.

It was also a tougher course than I expected and really windy.

Takeaway - not every race is going to be a great race / PR. Some days are just goin to be tough - and then we get it done. We are also smart and don't hurt ourselves. We also start re-evaluating our goals/plans for the day. Today became about encouraging others. Today became about picking up people who seemed to be hurting. ( I am beginning to think this may be my calling - I LOVE getting people to the finish line - especially their first.). Today became about others - maybe it should have been that way all along.

Happy weekend everybody.

That's a great attitude to have, Bryan.  Certainly a lesson I'm going to keep in mind for future races that don't go well for me.

Jeff - no negative self talk. As Amy says - no excuses. We get it done. You left.right.repeat until they say stop. Nike is Just do it. We are Just finish - sometimes not pretty but we don't miss out on the medal. Think about this - the pain goes away when they hang the medal around your neck.

Bryan, is once again right ....it is all about finishing. Last year while training for my 1st HIM I signed up for an Oly tri and right off the bat I knew I was out of my element. The swim went okay, the bike went okay, and the run....well that just was not pretty. I sooooo want to stop and turn around and start heading back tithe finish line and not do the ful run distance thinking no one would know the diffence but me and it was me that told myself you started you can finish. I ended up finishing as they were finishing up with the awards ceremony and I was about 3rd from last who finished but the main thing was that I finish. After that race I was like I am done with tris, I do not ever want to do that again, the next day I started analyzing what's I could have done diffently and the next few days I was back in training mode, it didn't hurt that I also found me a new coach.I was not at all prepared for that race but I was able to finish and to me that was the main goal.Kathy

Kathy - agree. I have to only be honest with myself. My honesty or dishonesty with anyone else doesn't matter. If for any reason I didn't finish or had to miss a race - I have vowed to never wear the tshirt. In fact - in AZ in '09 my daughter (22 at the time) wanted a shirt that said "my daddy is an Ironman". I bought her the shirt before the race (they only had about 3 left) but only after we agreed that if I didn't finish- the shirt would go in the trash. It is all about truth and justice, and fitness for all.

By the way - there are tshirt wearing rules we can discuss at some point.

I guess that did sound a little negative as I reread it. Not to worry, I am RACING and do not intend on even thinking about dnf'ing.

The wife and a few of the kids are doing the 5k fun run and my daughter, son and his fiance are doing the HM.

I'm sure i'll be in the 2 - 2 1/2 hour range but shooting for closer to the 2 hour mark. Over the next week I will be reviewing my race plan, studying the route, planning my strategy. Race day will be a well thought out plan....

so cant wait for the metal!

Jeff - pacing is the key. I would like you to consider running the first 7-8 miles at a pace 30 seconds slower than you think you can. Give me that 4 minutes - that's all I ask - and then I give you permission to run the last 5 with whatever you have left. You will pass MANY MANY people if you don't slow down in the second half. Please give me those 4 minutes and you can praise my wisdom next weekend. The hardest thing you will do is pacing the first mile - SLOW DOWN.

Bryan, if it was as cold and windy there this morning as it was here - great job on getting it done. I was frozen on the side of the soccer fields. Tomorrow, however is my turn at the 3M half marathon and I'm not looking forward to the cold. ( can you tell I don't like to be cold?). Anyway, I'm not as trained as I would like to be, so I'm going into the run like its a training run. If I do better, great. I'll have fun either way.

Briana - I am headed down but I can't get away until later tomorrow. I was going to come down to support some other friends I know running. I didn't even know you were running. I won't be able to get there for your finish. Dang it.

Have a great day - hopefully it is not as windy. Party your way thru it. Read my pacing advice above.

Just left.right.repeat till they tell you to stop.

Gotta tell you all a fun left.right.repeat story.

We are at IMAZ last year and on race day Sherpa Deb (aka the lovely Mrs LRR) and a really good friend of mine Ray were watching people mount at the bike mount line. A lady walked her bike out and was shivering as she had not warmed up from the swim. Ray started to rub her arms and shoulders and back to try to warm her up. He looked at her arm and it said Left.Right.Repeat in Sharpie. He laughed and asked if she read the book. She said she memorize it. He then told her we were best friends and introduced her to Sherpa Deb. We have all talked since and she is becoming a good friend as well. She said that was a highlight for her when she needed it she said ahe thought about that all day to keep her mind off the pain. This is a small world. Keep your head up. Party. Encourage others. I have a party every race I do.

Bryan,

Sorry to hear that the HM was rough, but congratulations on being able to turn it into a better day by helping others. I think you're right...it could be your calling - just based on the little interaction I've had with you on this board. Keep up the good work!

WOW! I havent been here in a few days and sooooooooo many posts!

Bryan, sorry the half didnt go as planned. I am sure you helped others and made it a valuable race.

I must weigh in on the peeing issue... I do pee in my wetsuit and I do pee on the bike in longer races. You just rinse off with water and clean your seat after the race. I am NOT going to Kona...but I am also not going to squat in the middle of no where whilst other bikers pass. I am very careful to make sure no one is close behind me. When nature calls...what are you going to do??? I always soak my wetsuit and rinse it after a race There I said it!!!!!

It has been beautiful here in New England this weekend. I did a 50 mile ride outside yesterday. Unheard of for this time of year!

Hey you all - there was nothing wrong with my half marathon - it just was. That's how this game is. It could have been sleep issues, food issues, not hydrating well - we review - try to adjust next time and go on. We sometimes get so involved in our race goals that anything short of our goal is viewed as failure. NO - THAT'S WRONG. None of us are doing this as a matter of livelihood or for a job. It's much more serious than that - it's a matter of life and death. So it didn't go as I had hoped - this is FUN - don't feel bad. Think of all the slobs sitting on their couch dying a slow (or quick) death. I believe this lifestyle saved my life and has given me years I would not have had. I was a heart attack waiting to happen - pre-diabetic - and cholesterol numbers in the hall of fame category - now - no mes
SA for 4 years and I ran 13.1 miles yesterday - do you realize how unbelieveable that is for most of America??? We are the elite - we get it. We are winning. So there it is - that's how I feel - whether it's a 5k or a half Ironman it is important. My finisher medal was the EXACT medal the first place dude got. I won - and you will too.

By the way - 13.1 and 70.3 should not be referred to as HALF of anything - its a long freakin way. Just sayin'
