left.right.repeat - 2012-01-29 10:22 AM Hey you all - there was nothing wrong with my half marathon - it just was. That's how this game is. It could have been sleep issues, food issues, not hydrating well - we review - try to adjust next time and go on. We sometimes get so involved in our race goals that anything short of our goal is viewed as failure. NO - THAT'S WRONG. None of us are doing this as a matter of livelihood or for a job. It's much more serious than that - it's a matter of life and death. So it didn't go as I had hoped - this is FUN - don't feel bad. Think of all the slobs sitting on their couch dying a slow (or quick) death. I believe this lifestyle saved my life and has given me years I would not have had. I was a heart attack waiting to happen - pre-diabetic - and cholesterol numbers in the hall of fame category - now - no mes
SA for 4 years and I ran 13.1 miles yesterday - do you realize how unbelieveable that is for most of America??? We are the elite - we get it. We are winning. So there it is - that's how I feel - whether it's a 5k or a half Ironman it is important. My finisher medal was the EXACT medal the first place dude got. I won - and you will too.

By the way - 13.1 and 70.3 should not be referred to as HALF of anything - its a long freakin way. Just sayin'

This, in part is the value in participating in a mentor group, especially one as strong as this group! This is the attitude I should have had when I completed my first (and currently only) marathon last year. It did not go the way I wanted, and I suffered the last 6 miles. I had a pity party and didn't even want to tell folks that I had done the marathon. There were several good reasons I didn't complete it as fast as I should have, but the important thing is that I finished. Bryan is so right - we are winners just by participating in these events, as most Americans are deteriorating day by day, while we are improving each day.

Benttwice - Congrats on doing a marathon.  I agree, that in and of itself is a GREAT accomplishment.  I've signed up for my first marathon, and haven't run a race longer than a 5k since high school (30 yrs ago).  I have several goals, #1 being to finish, #2 being to finish with a smile, and #3 a time goal.  I'd appreciate any advice on what went right/wrong in your first marathon.

I pass through downtown to get from work/home, and I would love to meet up whenever is convenient for you from the 20th to 23rd.. though Mon or Weds night woudl be a little better. I'll pm you later.

krazytallchick - 2012-01-27 2:31 PM

That would be so cool if I could meet up or even run with all those living around the Chicago area.  Particularly running with fat2tri on her first mile.  But Chicago is a big city and I am sure it will not work but here is my plans.

I will be in downtown Chicago from Feb 20-23 and then I will be meeting up with my brother in-law in Bloomingdale Thursday night and head back to GA on  Friday.

If I will be near you please let me know as it would be fun to meet up.

Didn't set a PR today but it wasn't a bad race at all for me. It was cold, but thank goodness not windy like yesterday. Turned out to be a great day for a half marathon. Ran pretty even splits, so I'm consistent if nothing else. Splits are in my log.Like Bryan said, just finishing is an accomplishment and we all get the same metal. Could I have gone faster? Of course, but today was not the day I needed to or wanted to. I ran a steady race and ran every single step of the way and enjoyed my time on the course. That's all that matters to me.

Bryan, your attitude on all of this is the best. Its so inspiring and helpful, because it makes me feel comfortable. I don't need to do amazing.. but I'm doing it... and that's a big change from me at any other point in my life.

Calm down, calm down, Carmen is my bike, she needed new rear bearings, new cables and a new headset bearing.  I really thought everyone knew my bike was named Carmen, didn't mean to get everyone in an uproar.  I sincerely apologize.  Am I forgiven?  Please!

Everyone besides the new folks, should have been clearer.  Her full name is Carmen Electra.  Please don't hate me.

Billy, you knucklehead. Even though I knew (vaguely) that your wife's name is NOT Carmen, I thought maybe I forgot.. You are forgiven, but my cake debt it wiped out.

Muahhaha

Billy - you are forgiven.  If your WIFE suddenly feels the benefits of improved health, I'll take the credit for sending healing powers in her direction.  And I'm glad if your bike is okay, too.

Run report: I had a great day on the treadmill.  New shoes are making a huge difference now that I've gotten used to them (K-Swiss).  My intervals are up to 6 minutes at 4.5 mph and my heart rate is staying below 165. Woo hoo!  I'll be running a mile in a few weeks! I feel like once I get that first mile done, improvement will happen a lot faster.  I missed a workout this week, so ended up with two rest days before my "long run" and I think that helped.  Plus I HYDRATED properly BEFORE the run.  No headache yet!

And thanks: I would not have even made it to day 20 of training (that's today) if it wasn't for this group. Thank you all for being here.  I look around my half empty gym now that the resolutionists have gone back to their couches, and it scares me.
