Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() neil, that sucks. i'm really sorry to hear the news. i guess the silver lining that it's far away from IMAZ is true, but it still sucks. boo. i'm sending you healing vibes. i've heard of people recovering from injuries that have used it to their advantage i.e. used it to get into pilates or yoga, improve their swim, etc. i hope you can find your own silver lining. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() as for me on the tri front. we had the reston sprint tri on sunday. we had something like 17 Fexies in it. it was a 400m pool swim, a 12 mile bike and a 5k. i PRed by almost 6 minutes from last year! in a sprint! i was so excited. i even broke into the overall category. i placed 4th overall woman. they awarded 5 deep. i was really happy with the improvement. with the overalls taken out, i actually would have placed 3rd in MENS 30-34! even more exciting!!!!????!!!!............................................................................................................................................................... RYAN PODIUMED!!!!! his first. he placed FIRST in his age group and 9th overall man. i was so proud and he was SOOOOO happy. it was a good day for the albrechts. the woman announcing us at the awards said we were a "power couple". it was silly what our team accomplished there. of the top 5 overall men, 4 were fexy. of the top 5 woman, 2 were fexy. we also won 1st in mens 25-29, first and 3rd in m30-34, first m35-39, 1st and 2nd in w30-34. silly. steve, if you're ever interested, you can find a listing of ryan's race reports here: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/races-list.asp?memberid=62602
my very basic race report is here http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=211739 by all accounts, the bike course was way short. probably more like 11.4 miles. even with that, i averaged 21.5mph. i was really happy with this.
okay, i'm going to take my own advice and get to bed early. good night all!
steve, congrats on approaching 10,000!!!!! that's really cool. just think about all the advice and inspiration you have doled out in all those posts. you've touched lives. you really and truly have. thank you. Edited by hooslisa 2010-06-07 8:42 PM |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA! "Power couple" --- I guess! Ain't THAT the truth! I too am really pleased with Ryan's first-place. Part of that is via you, or watching you at Columbia -- it almost seemed as if it mattered more to you how he did than how you did yourself. I was really struck by that, although I didn't say anything at the time. Part of it MIGHT have been that you already had your own podium spot and could affored to be expansive ( ![]() ANYHOW, phenomenal performances from both of you; it's almost as if words aren't enough to capture the magnitude of what the two of you are accomplishing "these days". I look back on my own being-coached gains as being incrementally steady, and nothing at all like the huge leaps you are experiencing. I can't really fathom that....but I'm certainly enjoying watching it from a distance! You Fexies! Jeezum! Obama might be worried about the Tea Party or a geneal overall Republican resurgence, but i think his real threat is in the form of Fexy! And you all are Right There, minutes away from the Oval Office! I mean, summon the talent and discipline and desire of Force Fexy, and that would be something to reckon with. Mercy! But again -- 4th overall woman and 9th overall man. WOW! I'm sorry, though, that I forgot about Reston sprint! I was so fixated on Eagleman, that it never once crossed my mind. I do remember you mentioning it at Columbia, but then it just went in one ear and out the other. Oops!! That 21.5mph is superb --- Lisa, meet Hammertime! Add that to your stunning 45-minute 10km at Columbia, and you're firing on all cylinders. As my mother might've said, "No flies on her!" And I will try the race reports again later, as my computer (I figure it's me) didn't allow them to be displayed before. Bah. Finally, the changing tent continues to work wonders, and has become second nature at my most common swim sites. It continues to ave me embarrassment and/or charges of public indecency! (And I was sure that, in time, I would be hit with one or both of those! ![]() ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey guys - Thanks so much for the help. Those posts were fantastically helpful and calming ![]() I stopped by the LBS after work today. They gave it a once over, did some quick adjustments on the rear derailleur and said I should be good to go. I also had the guy go over how to put the back wheel back on ![]() Water: as long as there are no jellyfish, I think I'm ready for a no-wetsuit swim. Jellyfish could still throw me for a loop, but you're right, Lisa - getting out for a swim on Saturday should help me adjust to the water conditions. I stopped by Target tonight to stock up on random odds and ends for the weekend, and a giant tub of vaseline was one of my first purchases ![]() The wave simply sucks. I'm trying to get my head around that. I will be ready for it by Sunday. Funny thing is, I actually know one other girl in my wave! I went to high school with Megan - she was a senior when I was a freshman, and we both ran XC. She found me recently through Athlinks, a website where a bunch of my recent results were listed. So I'm excited to see a familiar face ![]() The temperature forecast is coming back down - we're at 88 now (was forecast for 94 yesterday). I will be ok in the heat as long as I'm smart - I ran Chicago in 2008 and managed to negative split despite the 89 degree weather. I can do it - but maybe I should adjust the nutrition plan a bit? At Devilman, I used Gu's, water and Gatorade. Gatorade in the Aerobottle, water in the cages (and refilled the aerobottle with water from the course once done with gatorade). I took a Gu every 45 minutes. That was 4:30 and I made it through fine - I really only need to be able to add 2 hours (hopefully at most!) for Eman. Since this is going to be hotter and longer, however - maybe I should consider the Enduralytes - I'll talk to the guy at the Expo. I looooove Expos, haha ![]() Thanks for the advise about the hat, Lisa. I was considering bringing my visor - but it makes sense to bring a hat to keep the ice/towels under it. One more question - what do you guys do for sunscreen mid-race? At Devilman, I put sunscreen on pre-race, but I think it washed off after the swim. My back and the back of my calves got burned pretty bad. I'd like to avoid that if possible - I guess I'm going to have to take a break during transition to put some on? I will be wearing a top with more coverage than I wore at Devilman - there I wore a racerback zoot, on Sunday I'm going to be wearing my Glen Rock Tri Club jersey which is kind of unisex (it is the same fit as the FEXY top you have in your FB profile, Lisa). I guess I'll have to stop to do that. Oh, I read your report from last year, Lisa - what is the low-label thing? Is that how your bike should go on the rack? So loop your bike seat behind the bar so the tire is on the ground on the side where the label is? Also, I hope I find the guy with the six-pack who is just itching to take off his shirt ![]() ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA - congrats on your performance this weekend! How fun ![]() PS - from the podium picture, way to represent the short ladies!!! The third and fifth women were super tall! ![]() Edited by ThatGirl 2010-06-08 9:24 PM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i look like a mini me, right. the funny thing is (and i might have posted this here already). i have NO concept of how short i am. i am like the yorky who thinks she's a great dane. i don't think of myself as short. when i'm out and about i don't feel short, but, Wow, when pictures come in i AM short. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jess, the simplest thing to do if you are worried about burning is to just more sunscreen on in transition. however, because i am mindful of transitions, here are a few ideas: 1.) get an aerosol can of it and have mark hit you with it on the run course 2.) squeeze some sunscreen into a sandwich bag (or get a trial size to carry with you) and smear it on yourself on the bike. 3.) i've found that baby/kids sunscreen is MUCH heavier and stays on a lot better. maybe use that instead. i burn easily and i only put on sunscreen at the beginning of my century ride earlier in the season and never had to apply it again....and it was a hot day
on the topic of your wave and jellies.... jelly fish get destroyed the longer the swim goes on. even if there are jellyfish, they will be long annhilated before you get to them. i think that is one of the reasons that i didn't have issues last year. your wave might be a benefit in that respect. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() steve, are you on facebook. i didn't think you were. anyway, here is a link to a few of the photos i made just for you: http://picasaweb.google.com/hooslisa/2010RestonSprint?feat=directlink there is a picture in there of me and another guy holding our "trophies". His name is Henry. He also finished 4th overall (men). they didn't have awards to give to the 4th and 5th place overalls, so that's us showing off our wares. there is a group shot of ryan and 3 other guys. the guy to ryan's left (or your right as you look at the picture) is our coach, scott baldwin. Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JESS - You're sounding cool as a cucumber! It's very good you have the Chicago experience behind you, and are already conjuring it up to help you with Eagleman. And I'm sure you will be very smart about it; I just think that's how you approach all of this stuff. As I was going to mention Endurolytes.......and I still will......but here's a cautionary tale. Even though i have used them for several years, in Oct. '07 at Bassman half I had an unfortunate episode with them. It was about mile 6 maybe, and I had them with me on the run - a few in a little baggy. I took one or two (can't remember), and within about 10 minutes I began to feel nauseous -- the worst nausea I have ever had in a race. The course passes right past the pavillion, and of course that's where all the spectators were, and I felt really terrible, and very fearful that I would lose it all right there. But I ran through, head down, and as soon as I entered the bush at the other end of the beach I ducked into it and dry-heaved for a minute or two. Nothing came up, and I guess........what? I'm not sure. I can't believe I felt that terrible and that I didn't vomit and went on to feel fine for the rest of the run, so I'm just not sure what went wrong. BUT I attribute it to the Endurolytes, as that seemed to be the "taste" I had in my system when I felt the worst. So, all of that is to tell you that if you haven't worked with them before, be very careful. Here are a few thoughts: (1) Have a few with you in a little baggie that you can use if cramping starts. (2) As they are capsules, that might not sit well on a fragile stomach, so maybe try breaking open a capsule and mixing it into a drink to gulp down at T2 before the run. (3) I forgot this one. I'm sure there were three, so I'll just hold this space until it comes to me! As for (2), a lot of people can't do the capsules, and even though the structure of the actual capsule is somehow vegetable-based, that doesn't mean it will sit well in a fragile stomach. So, for these folks breaking the capsules and mixing in the powder works mostly well, although the sodium in the capsules will make the drink a bit salty if one uses two or three or more capslues. But Endorolytes are a good product, and if cramping happens they could be a godsend for you. (Love that magnesium!) As for sunscreen, you have two options. The first is to take the few moments in T2 to re-slather yourself, and the second is to have a small baggie filled with sunscreen to carry with you on the run and use if necessary. The stretch of road I was mentioning the other day is the perfect place for Sunburn Hell, so if you are susceptible to burning you might want to be fully prepared. And I've seen lots of people on tri runs who are all a-mess with slathered sunblock, so it's not exactly a fashion effort they're making -- just globs here and there, and rubbed in and around -- sort of. And coming from a bald guy, of course you're going to hear to go with a hat and not a visor. That's a no-brainer (as it were), for me! But also for the reasons Lisa says - ice and towels and just dousing water, which will still in the fabirc longer. Years ago I had a photo taken of me on the run of some half-iron or iron, and it was right after I had poured a pile of ice cubes into my cap. So, boy, did I ever look goofy --- hat perched up kind of high, and looking lumpy, and sitting at an odd angle. Nope! Didn't order that one!! I always wear the type of top you see in my photo here, with coverage that goes out to the ends of my shoulders. Literally always, I've never had anything with narrower shoulders. It's just where I start/stop my exposure, and so the tan line is in place and I don't have to worry about any surfaces that might burn. (And remember that I'm one of those who is very, very lazy about using any sunblock at all.) And just as an aside here, one of my qualms about signing up for Triple-T is that everyone has to wear the same top, and the style they choose is one with narrower shoulders. So far, i have allowed that to be a deal-breaker for me, so the width of shoulders actually matters to me!!! And low-label is a new term for me. LISA? Yoo-hoo!! Finally, for me Vaseline is just for feet, and that's when I'm on long bikes and runs. Even at Mooseman HIM a few years ago when the water was super-cold, I used BodyGlide as a hoped-for insulative material on my hands and feet, rather than risk some getting on the wetsuit and eating away the neoprene. 88 degrees at not 94! WHEW!!!!! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Further on visors -- Upon entering Hell, all bald guys are given a uniform-issue visor. Not a hat -- a visor. A dumb old visor. Seriously. Edited by stevebradley 2010-06-09 7:26 AM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() label low: cta has each participants spot designated with a label with your name on it. those stickers alternate sides. you need to have your lowest tire on the side of your label. i don't believe it matters if you rack by the bars or the seat post, but the wheel on the ground needs to be on the same side your label is facing. they will check for this and make you move things around if it's not right. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() steve, i'm so glad you are using your changing tent, but you should know the more affectionate name for it is "towelee". much cuter, don't you think? ours have come in handy for every race we've done since. i fashioned a women's "towelee" that has snaps on the arm holes so a lady can change her shirt without exposing herself. they're high tech now!
|
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA - And what -- I'm not worried about exposing myself?!? I see a marketing scheme percolating away in your head with these....towelees? (You're right, that is better than "changing tent" -- but isn't that how you introduced it to me?) So in two weeks we have gone from a low-tech "changing tent" to a high-tech (at least for women) piece of gear called a "towelee". Evolution, right before my eyes! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA again - Label low -- I knew it all along! I traditionally prefer races that reward my insomnia, meaning that I like getting to transition first thing and claiming the sweetest spot. However, the longer I am in this racket the more I appreciate orgs such as CTA which has designated spots and where there are rules (i.e, "label low") that govern how bikes are to be sequenced. I love "newbies", of course, and support them to the nth degree, but in too many races in the past couple of years I've seen way too many bike rack mess-ups, including several instances of people arriving late and basically fitting their bike ON TOP of two bikes already racked. I'm assuming these are newbies....but maybe not, because: One of the most talented triathletes in the Ottawa area, and a regular (and very supoortive) contributor to Slowtwitch, ALWAYS shows up late for Ottawa-area races and re-arranges bikes so that his can fit in. Now, maybe he is just trying to be space-economical and getting every inch of acreage out of his chosen rack, but it always bothers me to see him do this. He's not outwardly obnoxious about it, but he'll just slide these bikes thisaway and those bikes thataway, and shuffle the gear along with them, and -- voila! He has himself a primo racking space! He has never done this to me, or even my rack, but if he did I would probably josh him about it, but not in any nastiness. He really is a very good guy and a supportive (and original in ideas) member of Slowtwitch, so I guess if that's his biggest crime in thre universe, it can be overlooked. (But what example is he setting for the newbies??) |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA once more - And how are you feeling? Psyched and then some for Eagleman? And what about those elements of performance anxiety? I haven't mentioned anything, figuring that Eagle would be a good acid test for them, but let's convene post-Eagle, okay? |
|
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() that would me off royally about that guy moving around bikes. it would DEFINITELY not fly with me. I didn't realize that i was getting to the reston sprint site early, but judging by the complete lack of bikes when we got there, we did. it was a pick your spot race. i got the first spot at the end. nice. there is a woman that i am friends with in fexy who is in my age group. we have never raced together before, at least since we have known each other. she is really nice, and i like her a lot, but i wanted to beat her. i knew she was one number higher than me and would be on the same rack. i kept waiting to see her show up on sunday, but by the time she got there she got the last spot at the (furthest) end. when we were waiting to start i joshed her about getting there so late and getting the crappiest spot on the rack. she said she liked her spot. i do remember liking that inside spot because it was out of the way of the "action" and i had more space. now, though, i'm realizing how much transitions matter. anyway, it was a time trial start w/ 5 second gaps. she started 5 seconds after me, passed me on the swim and then i passed her IN TRANSITION. just the difference of the rack distance HAS to take another 10-20 seconds total between t1 and t2. i actually ended up with the fastest transitions of all the women. i attribute this to my life practice. when i walk in the door from work i drop my work stuff wherever it falls, rip off my work clothes that get dropped in a line behind me between the door and the bedroom, and put on comfy clothes. i have done this my whole life. who knew i was training for transitions this whole time? my house might be a little messy, but it's a small price to pay for 20 extra seconds in a race so, how am i feeling for eagleman? mostly good. i ran and swam yesterday and neither of them felt great. i have 3 days to work out the kinks and loosen up. i'm foam rolling, stretching, hydrating, sleeping....it's all i can do. i even stopped drinking alcohol 2 weeks ago when i saw the 2 week forecast said it was going to be very hot and humid. i haven't wanted to do anything that would dehydrate me. if it was just me going there, i would be fine, i think. I know where my training has brought me so far, and i know that i have a solid pr waiting for me. i think the only source of stress i'm feeling is caused by a budding rivalry that i am feeling with another fexy woman.....which i keep telling myself is dumb. i can only control myself and my race. as soon as i start realizing that, the better i will be. my race should not be dictated by how i stack up against someone else. i keep trying to tell myself, it's me against the course....and in that contest, i know I will win. i ran into this in columbia. i knew that to have a chance of beating this woman (and others) i would need to lose as little time as possible on the swim. then, though, when i was in the midst of a terrible swim the negative talk of, "there is no way you can place/ catch up with her/ hit your goal time" started, and i let myself be impacted by that the rest of the race. whereas, if i had just keep telling myself, "push through it and take down the rest of this course," i don't think i would have been as impacted by the poor swim. i have a goal time (that i will share afterward aside from the head games, i am feeling strong. That's my challenge now.

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA - I'm not even going to ask your permission to pass on that story whenever I want to; all I can say is that I won't use your name! That is too funny, your lifelong habits of strewing gear and clothes post-work as training for transitions. I will continue to smile and giggle about that, well, forever. Great story! I'm struggling, though, with the concept of you not being ultra-organized, with a place for everything and everything in its place. Ah, the two sides of you! And, see, there are benefits to being the first one at the race site! Rule of thumb for races with non-assigned racks -- arrive 17 minutes before the posted time of when transition opens. That's right, 17 minutes. You heard it here first! As I've said before, and as you know from last year, I understand fully what you're saying about competing against others versus running your OWN race. I try to believe that these two are not mutually exclusive - and maybe for some people it works that way - but i don't think I'll ever be at that place. For a race such as Eagleman, it all gbets compounded by the Wild Cards who show up and whom you know nothing about. In a post last week I mentioned those three guys -- Smith, Halttunen, Wren - and they're coming from Indiana, Florida, and Virginia, respectively. Now, i know those names because I keep up with that sort of thing, but for people who don't know them, they're just another name on the list. For you, and especially Ryan, it becomes absurd because your age groups are just so deep; a person would need a velcro mind AND a photographic memory to hold onto the names of all the movers and shakers who might descend on Eagleman from far-flung places. So, it is just so smart to go you against the clock, and not worry about any of the other W30-34. Your race should be stunning -- you're in the best athletic spot of your life, i dare say -- and where it falls in the whole scheme of things.....well, that will be a surprise at about 1pm on Sunday, won't it? Is Scott "letting" you maneuver this your own way? Is he mentioning specific times for you, or have you shared your goal-time with him? (I'm guessing yes and no, respectively.) Keep the pre-Eagle details coming, as I'm living this one vicariously through you. Finally, VERY good move on the alcohol decision -- but of course that's coming from a lifelong teetotaller, so what the hell good is that endorsement?!? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thank for the mojo, steve! So far, it's been a great weekend. We got into Cambridge around 2pm Friday. Went to packet pick-up and then to the race site where I got in a nice easy run and a swim. I am so happy to report that the water is lovely and (so far) jellyfish free!! It was lovely. This morning we met up with Jess at 8:30 for a bike/run/swim. Took a 30 min easy ride, followed by what was supposed to be a 15 min easy run. I was aiming to go 9:30s are slower on the run, but I had to do 8:40s just to stay with Jess We saw a few pros this morning at transition. Andrew Yoder was doing some race pace sprints on the run. Michellie Jones was biking and swimming. It was a beautiful morning for sure. Hot and humid, but nice. I'm feeling pretty good about tomorrow. Here are a few pics from this morning for your viewing pleasure. In the one of the three guys, Andrew Yoder is the guy on the left. He's the guy who won Columbia commandingly last month. Sadly, we have not seen Terrenzo yet. Actually, it is probably a good thing because ryan would have swooned like a 12 year old girl (it's his "man" crush). He said if he had seen him he would have asked Terrenzo to sign his chest We're back in the hotel now watching the World Cup and keeping our feet up. We'll head back to the site around 5pmish to rack our bikes, bring coolers to the FeXY tent and head back to the expo real quick to get water bottles (they didn't have them yesterday). It's been a lovely weekend so far. here are the pics: http://picasaweb.google.com/hooslisa/2010EaglemanWeekend?feat=directlink |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LISA and JESS! Awaiting further word from both of you! I saw the results, and you both (along with Ryan) must be very pleased with how it all went. I have no true sense of the "quality" of the day, although the Boston Globe was saying that Sunday would be 89 in Baltimore and 90 in Wednesday......and the M60-64 results suggest that many might've wilted in the heat; they were a fair bit slower than expected. And the wind? And was in a wetsuit swim? I had two very good races, but of course they pale in compariosn with the demands of Eagleman, so ain't sayin' nuthin' until I hear about your experiencs with Eagleman. REALLY well done, the three of you, and I hope you'vre emerged from the rigors injury-free and full of satisfaction and a huge sense of accomplishment! I'm just sitting here, waiting............. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() hey steve, it was a hot hot day!! first of all, this was the first time in Eagleman history that the swim was not wetsuit legal. I actually wasn't worried about it at all. i had swam friday and saturday without the wetsuit and had felt fine. The swim was either way long or the current was a lot worse than it appeared or both. apparently all the swim times were WAY slow. last year i did 38-39minutes. this year i had a better swim and it took 48 minutes!! my goal split was 36min the winds were excellent. of the 4-5 times i have done the course, this was the most friendly. slight head winds here and there on the way out, but for most of it i didn't notice anything. egypt road was NO WHERE near as bad as it has been in previous rides. it was a cyclists day for sure. i think i averaged 21mph here. this was .5mph faster than goal. did the bike in 2:39:59! I was stoked with this. the run was HOT!! i've heard reports that the actual temp was 90-94 degrees with a heat index of 110. while it was great not have winds on the bike, there was nothing to cool you off on the run. i walked all the aid stations and treated them like convenience stores. ice for the sports bra, water on the head, water to drink, pepsi to drink at every one. i worked my race plan to a tee as far as hydration, and as a result i didn't cramp at all, even on this hot day. it looked like a death march on the run, but i was able to maintain and average of 7:48s (only 14 seconds/mile off goal) with only 3 miles (barely) over 8min/mile. i made up a TON of time on the run. in the end i finished 5:13. my goal had been 5:03-5:08, but with that swim and the weather, i am really happy. really really happy. it's a 26 min PR from last year!! I think i finished top 10 in AG, which for Eagleman I am really, really pleased with. AND!!!! I qualified for Clearwater 70.3 championships!!! I hadn't even thought that would happen!! the only thing that is bittersweet is that they apparently had such a difficult time giving away kona slots to other age groups, that i found out they gave a kona slot to anyone who was present in my age group. ugh. i'll learn to stick around for that process at future qualifying races. I didn't see jess at all yesterday. i felt fine during the race, but after i was having issues and wasn't feeling well at all. i ended up laying down or doubled over in the FeXY tent for several hours. I am glad to hear that she did well! I look forward to hearing more details!! ryan did awesome. this marks the first race where i beat him ....got to run and pack. i'm heading to myrtle for the week to see my dad and step-mom! my coach told me nothing for two days and then nothing structure for the next 5 days..only workout if and how I want to. sounds like a great vacation to me!!! congrats jess!!! I am really excited to see your report...and it was SO nice seeing you again! |
