Decided it would be interesting to take the certification class (and interesting to see Bob Seebohar and Bobby McGee in person).
You'll have to let me know how that goes. I'm guessing its not going to be worth the money, but we'll see. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED So swim last night was great. I was a little afraid since my legs weren't really interested that morning, but it went well. I suck at backstroke flips and I get lapped on the breakstoke kick!!! Any suggestions? I go alright on the full stroke, but kick alone and I suck, I barely move... I was just thankful there was NO FLY!!!! |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Overslept this morning so I only got in 6 or my 8 run miles. Grrr. I never sleep in. I've been super tired lately, so I'm going to go with it. Lift & swim tonight. I'm really looking forward to the weekend. Christmas shopping and date night! I'm about 80% done with Christmas shopping, and I'll be happy to wrap that up. I'm adding shorty bars to my road bike next month and need suggestions for a forward seat post. Anyone? I already asked Rudy, but I thought I'd toss it out here as well. Thanks! Edited by jarvy01 2011-12-01 6:32 AM |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED You guys had some great months. I've avoided running, as I can't seem to shake the IT Band issue. I'll wait another week and try to pick it up again. More importantly, I finally met with my ortho yesterday (one of the best shoulder guys in CT). It was confirmed with his exam, and the MRI, (I hope I word this correctly), there is a posterior and anterior Labral tear, along with a larger cyst. The cysy I believe (sometimes I get lost with all the medical language thrown at me) can be caused by a shoulder separation. My shoulder may have separated very quickly during the accident, but came right back into place. And, the cyst will continue to grow over time, making it more painful. So, what are my peeps thoughts? Deal with it, or get the surgery? I don't think I need a second opinion. This Dr. has done my left shoulder and my right knee. And his reputation is very good and in high demand. I scheduled surgery for the earliest date possible, Jan 13th, 2012. He said I may be able to start swimming in 3 months, more likely 4 months. Ughhhhhhhhh. I really had hopes of REV 3 Quassy HIM. I am afraid of losing all my fitness, and not even sure if I can ride the trainer or run on treadmill post srugery. I forgot to ask that question. Thoughts?????????? Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh |

Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Jeff, that totally sucks. I'm sorry. Wondered where you've been. Obviously I am completely new to this sport, so I don't have experience in this area, but if it were me, I'd get the surgery. I would hate for you to hurt yourself more by pushing things further. Is there the possibility that you could do more damage if you don't get the surgery? This is a tough call. |

That stinks but it sounds like surgery is the right choice in the long run. A little down time for better results forever. I'd be shocked if they don't let you at least ride the trainer within a week tops. It seems medicine these days REALLY favors activity as soon as possible after operations to get you moving again. |

Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Its tough with the cyst because you have no idea how much it will grow or how much pain it will cause. I think surgury is the best call. With regard to trainer riding and running. You should be able to get on the trainer quickly because you don't need you shoulder (you'll need to ride without hands). Running is tougher. There's a decent amount of torso/shoulder rotation when you run and my guess is you're looking at least a month without running. I think doing the Olympic at Rev 3 is still a possibility (and there are plenty of late season half -- I like FIRMman in September in Rhode Island).

Pro 4528 Norwalk, Connecticut | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Surgery now, few weeks i am sure you can ride the trainer, 2 months should get you to be able to finish a HIM swim..note i said FINISH, you wont set records, but finish. As long as you put in good honest work in that 2 months. you could always volunteer the race, pretty sure you get a discount on the following year Sorry Jeff, that sucks |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Thanks for all the input. I am leaning towards the surgery. You are right Kelly, I have no idea how big or quickly the cyst will grow. He said I could wait until fall, but why!!! Do it now that it is off season. Timberman in NH is in August. I could do REV 3 Olympic, and Timberman in August, or another HIM. Sucks that I just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. We move on. That also eliminates the Hyannis HM in late February. But there are plenty of those around. Thaks again for the input.

I would try to push to see if he can get it done this year though. Maybe call 1x per week and look for cancellations. Also, keeps it in this years medical ... although you will likely have next year therapy. |

Master 2151 Johns Creek, Georgia | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Jeff - bummer about your shoulder. I know nothing about cysts or your injury, but it sounds like surgery is the way to go. I went to the spine guy today and based on the tests he did in his office, he diagnosed herniated disc in L5/S1. I asked why he didn't need an MRI to diagnose, since that's what I had with my neck. He said based on all the tests he did, the pain & location, and my classic reactions to certain things he did, he's positive that's what it is. He said a lot more, but I can never remember or get it completely wrong. I absolutely trust him. Options given were - do nothing, PT, or epidural cortisone injection. I went with the injection, which he agreed with. Doing nothing and PT is probably not going to do anything since this has been going on for 2 months now. I'm scheduled for next Wednesday. |

He's also a great "D" in an ABCD scramble as he is about a 35 handicap but can make a bogey or par every now and then.
Sorry man, that sucks. You will be in a tight sling sleeping in a chair for 2-4 weeks post surgery. Riding a trainer will not be in the cards for sometime then you have rehab. if it needs to be done do it and defer to next year. Yes, you'll lose all your fitness but can come back. I herniated L5/S1 disc in 2009 and ran a marathon in 2010 as well as did 5 tris. that which does not kill us makes us stronger. |
