New Haven, CT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED karen26.2 - 2011-12-01 5:03 PM Jeff - bummer about your shoulder. I know nothing about cysts or your injury, but it sounds like surgery is the way to go. I went to the spine guy today and based on the tests he did in his office, he diagnosed herniated disc in L5/S1. I asked why he didn't need an MRI to diagnose, since that's what I had with my neck. He said based on all the tests he did, the pain & location, and my classic reactions to certain things he did, he's positive that's what it is. He said a lot more, but I can never remember or get it completely wrong. I absolutely trust him. Options given were - do nothing, PT, or epidural cortisone injection. I went with the injection, which he agreed with. Doing nothing and PT is probably not going to do anything since this has been going on for 2 months now. I'm scheduled for next Wednesday. Karen - call me tomorrow if you want (203-218-5498) i have lots of experience with the L5/S1 - had a large central herniation in 2009 - did you do oral steroid first? Is he recommending a short right now? if so why? Is he doing the shot or a neurosurgeon? |

Is he recommending a short right now? if so why? Is he doing the shot or a neurosurgeon? I have not taken any oral steroids this time. I did earlier this year when I had the herniated disc in my neck, but ended up having the injection after months and months of no relief. He is recommending the shot now, he feels confident from my symptoms, and the tests he did today that it's in the L5/S1. I could do the steroids, but since it's been 2 months, and is getting worse I don't know that it will do anything. If I had not seen him several times before, I would probably have questioned him more, but I really trust him and his expertise. He will be doing the shot himself, at a specail medical facility with an xray to guide the needle. Same place, and same procedure I had in my next, just in my lower back. Do you think I'm crazy? (I may call you tomorrow. Curious what you did for treatment.) |

Never hurts to hear from a second dr. that surgery is the best option. Jeff - jsklarz - are you feeling better?? Karen - I am glad you got some answers on your back. Doesn't it just feel better knowing that pain relief will happen soon! Add me to the injured list - I have a cervical herniated disk that is causing numbness and tingling and pain in my right arm. It has been going on for a month and I have not been successful self medicating. I have an appt tomorrow to see someone. I'll update later. Kelly - I think its great your getting your certification. Is it possible to get spin certified the same weekend? |

Is it possible to get spin certified the same weekend? Jeff-y was making commentary on how worthless the certification is by comparing it to spin certification. Its actually an interesting point. USAT certification only requires a weekend and then you a certified coach. It takes a lot longer than a weekend to be a halfway decent coach. I look at it as hoop to jump through but not as the foundation for my knowledge base. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Good luck with that and taking the injections is a smart way to start to see if that clears the problem. I had a friend it worked for ... as for me I had 2 sets in 6 months, so surgery was my option. They went in and shaved the disc and shaved the vertebrae (lamenectomy and discectomy??). Be very careful after the injections, baby yourself. |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED I came across a 2nd year race in Michigan - Grand Rapids Triathlon. It offers 3 distances - sprint, oly, and 70.3. It seemed to have received awesome feedback, and it's in a really nice area of MI. I was going back and forth with which distance I'd like to race and decided on the oly. Don't think I'll have enough time with my bike on the roads before June to justify the jump to 70.3 so early in the summer. I'm signing up for the oly today, and my husband said we'll vacation in Grand Haven for the week following the race. I'm jazzed!!!!!! I had a really solid swim last night. I've been doing tons of drills and paying close attention to form, and it's starting to pay off. 100 yard average was 1:34 for 1350 meters last night. Woot! I wasn't even breathing hard either. Flip turns are natural now, and I'm glad that I nailed those down for master's swim. I think doing them will improve my open water swim anyway. Looking foward to the weekend!!! |

Just be understand that the flip turn generates a lot of speed from the push off the wall which does not translate to OWS. Its actually for this reason (and a few weird ones) I DONT do flip turns. However, at a masters swim you would want to do so. Awesome job! |

However, at a masters swim you would want to do so. Awesome job! Thank you! I actually find that I push off just the same as I do with open turns. The benefit for me is not taking that extra suck of air that I did with the open turns. I feel like it's strengthening my lungs or something. I do agree that my 100 time went down a bit due to the flipturns, so there was probably some speed gained from only that. I'm going to keep working on my form and have another video taken in Feb. When I do, I'll post it here. It ought to be interesting to compare last year's to this year's. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED I think I actually got closer to figuring out the free flip turn last night .. prior I was flailing my arms slowing myself down. Not perfect yet, but I don't feel as winded coming off the wall, and am coming of much, much faster. However, I am at a total loss as to the backstroke flip turn ... that is a tough nut. Not only do you have to have your timing (stroke) from the flags to the walk down (or the color of the lane lines), but you only get 1 free arms worth of pulling legally to pull yourself to free for the flip, then still have to figure out flipping on your back and at the right depth (I tend to push off at an angle downward, then see my distance to the surface underwater and shoot straight up). Youtube videos make it seem so easy ... |
