I think I will check it out then if it's still available. I'm assuming you have to have a mat to put underneath it? Are they really loud? Glad to hear it can handle a lot of hours, because you're right - I need to wear that thing out!

mcgilmartin - 2012-11-27 7:35 PM

To be honest I haven't heard that about magnetic trainers but I suppose it's possible.  I'd definitely suggest you check out the Kinetic on Craigslist.  Mine is awesome.  I've had it for about 4 years and it's got 100's of hours of use on it.  Definitely a good company and a great product.  If the product documentation says it can handle a 29'er then even better!  I know mine does not work with my MTB (which is a 29'er as well).

You'll be using it a lot this winter with that 1/2 Ironman next fall

You definitely need a mat unless you want to stain your carpet with sweat.  I use an old yoga mat under mine and it works perfectly.  Also plan on investing in an extra television to watch movies/videos while you're on it.  Those hours get VERY boring.

Oh, and loudness?  Somewhat.  I can't lie to you, they make some noise for sure.

My only other bit of advice to you- get a trainer-specific tire for your bike.  The heat generated on a trainer will melt regular tires in no time.  I can't tell you how many sets I went through.

Thanks for the help! The ad says it comes with a "Rav X wheel block for your front wheel with two different heights ($15 value)." Not sure what that is.

And a "Kinetic rear training tire (700x23) to save your road tires from wear and tear on the trainer."

We have 5 trainers - 2 Kurt kinetics, 2 CycleOps, and 1 Elite. The KK's are fluid, as well as one of the CycleOps. The other CycleOps and Elite are magnetic. (the reason we have so many trainers is due to the fact that we have 4 people that all want to train at the same time, and I keep the 5th at work for lunchtime rides).I prefer my KK Road machine. It's fluid, so the power curve is steady. It's a heavier trainer, but feels very solid and I feel comfortable putting my bike on it. I'm not a big fan of the CycleOps trainers, but most of that has to do with set-up. The Jet Fluid Pro feels like a solid trainer (it's my husbands trainer and he's not a small guy), but the rear wheel squeaks a lot when riding, regardless of what adjustments we make on it. The CycleOps magnetic trainer is on my 7 year old daughters bike, and her workouts have been pretty tame, so it does its job for her (sold to me for $25 so who am I to complain). I bought the Elite because I didnt have many trainer options here in Germany. It's okay, but is all plastic'ish and just feels cheap. I only use it at work, so it's only getting a half-hour to hour session a couple times a week. You will want a mat, training block, training tire, fans, computer and/or tv, TrainerRoad and Sufferfest videos! The block is to go under your front tire to raise your bike so it's level with the elevated rear wheel. I currently have 2 CycleOps blocks under my front tire to do my best to simulate uphills (it's not working - I'm still weak). TrainerRoad and Sufferfest videos are a great way to actually ensure you are getting a quality workout. If you get these, you will need at the very least, a cadence meter. I have the Garmin FR60 with the GSC10 sensor and heart rate strap (also have the foot pod for when I go running and it pairs with the FR60.Please let me know if you have any specific questions! Happy training!

The block goes under the front tire. One to even the bike with the back, the second to simulate uphills.

Right, just like Mariah said

Sufferfest is all the rage in training right now.  2012 is my year of the run, so I have spent 0 hours on my bike.  2013 will see me Suffering too

Anyone have a wool jersey (for cycling)? I just bought a long sleeve wool jersey to try out since our tram is looking at going with wool for the event. I opted for the L/S one over the S/S one (same price) since I don't have any L/S jerseys and was told that if nothing else, I could use this one like a sweater if I dont like it as a jersey. I had "Mittelbrunn Velo Club" embroidered on it (that's the name of our small village - to my knowledge, there's no Velo club here, haha)! Will let you know what I think once it makes its way across the pond!

I've seen them but never tried one.  They're pretty cool looking, but I'd think you'd have to wear a baselayer or itch to death with them.  It'll be great for that Alpine riding you're going to be doing.

I haven't heard anything from the guy with the Road Machine on Craigslist, although the ad is still posted. I'm thinking he may have someone interested and is waiting to see if that works out, so I will probably wait a bit too. Meanwhile I've seen good deals on Jet Black Fluid Trainers (?) so I'm trying to read up on them. It seems from your post and Matt's that there are a lot of good options out there, luckily. I definitely want one by the end of the year! Thank you guys for all the feedback.

Merino wool isn't itchy like most people think of wool. It's actually very soft and feels like a soft (thicker) t-shirt. My kids had wool diapers when they were babies (cloth diapered) and most people would have never guessed they were made of wool! I hunk I'd wear a base layer anyway. I don't usually, but seeing as how I'll probably be in bibs and will at some point need to go to the bathroom, if I have to go in the "green room" aka bushes, then I wouldn't be totally stripped down as I'd at least have a base layer and not completely nekkid!

Women in bibs for cycling would certainly present some challenges.  At least boys can pull them down without having to take them off.  Do you think the comfort factor when riding is worth it though?  I love bibs- can't imagine not doing long rides without them.

I only have 1 set of bibs - waiting on another pair in the mail (may take a month or two). I love my one set, so I agree - I can't imagine doing a long ride in shorts. I mean I guess it's not that big of a deal since you see women in sports bras anyway, but I'm on the modest side and would prefer a little more coverage!!

Just got a Garmin Edge 500 for my bike. My husband thinks it is for him, but I got him the 800 since he will be going off in the woods and on trails and such. I bought the 500 for me in order to replace the FR60 I've been using so I can map my route and see what my elevation is while I'm training for this crazy event. I can't wait to take it outside, however, that will have to wait until March/April time frame as we already have snow/ice on the ground

Anyone else have th 500 or 800? Any tips/tricks that you learn that are not in the instruction manual?

Hey Kids,

Ron is getting ready to launch the 2013 Mentor program soon.  This group will be archived, and we'll be adding some new members for 1st quarter.  Of course, everyone here is already in for 2013 if you want to be.  Also, if you have another mentor group you'd like to join I have NO problem whatsoever with you guys doing that.  My buddy Dave (Oriolepwr) has a great group, so does my friend Quincy (QuincyF).  I'd love to have you all back but I totally get if you'd like to "spread your wings" so to speak.

I'll let you know a day or two in advance when the new groups open up.

Mariah,

I don't have either one.  I used the 305 for many years, then I had the 310.  I switched to the Timex Ironman this year and I love it.  You might want to ask over in the Equipment forum.  I'm sure Mark is psyched to be getting an 800!  Enjoy!

I can't think of any other group I'd want to be a part of. Hopefully this upcoming year is a better year for triathlons than 2012 was.

I found this quote tonight on Athlinks.  It's pithy, yet profound.

Stop limiting yourself, stop making excuses, get rid of that artificial anchor you carry. You wouldn't let anyone else do that to you. Why do it to yourself?
