"Couldn't agree more.  I've been saying that since the end of the season.

I agree, set pieces are ugly, but they are ugly world wide.  I agree that they need to clean it up, and quickly.

And I will always keep this thread alive, even when there is a WC thread next summer, which you know there will be.  When all the bandwagon jumpers join in.  Not that I mind.  The more the merrier.

And I won't be able to go to the November 7th Chicago Fire playoff game.  I'll be in Banff Canada.  Grrrrrr!"

Cool, Crowny, you'll be over in my neck of the woods--well sort of. Have you ever been to the Canadian Rockies before? You'll love it. Banff was one of my favorite all-time vacations. Really some breath-taking scenery.

Too bad about missing the game, though.

Yeah.  This is our third year going up.  It is a work trip for my wife and I'm there to help a bit.  we are going to the Banff Film Festival.  She goes to scout the films out for the coming year and I go to help.  And yes, it is absolutely beautiful.  Truly awe inspiring.

Now, back to footy.

Awwwww fudge muffins.

Yeah, it hasn't been pretty for your teams, Crowny. And I was pretty disappointed with the Sounders home draw--they had a couple of really good scoring opportunities but failed to cash in. Sets up an exciting weekend though. Hope you can watch the Fire game in BC.

I didn't get to watch it, but I followed it on my cell.

During dinner.

At a very nice restaurant.

With my wife looking over my shoulder trying to get the minute by minute update too.

I will get to see the game this weekend.  IN PERSON!

Crowny - your boys played well....your american ones that is....NE were second best and I love watching McBride play....Blanco not so much...falls over easily..

Your 'pool boys seem to have issues staying upright too..N'gog went over easily last night....i think your EPL title hopes are done

Manu/Chelsea..not a quality game, should have been 2 reds - especially Kung Fu Evans...and I think that I now despise Fletcher as much as I did Robbie Savage...what a twat!..

Some good games coming up - Arse getting better - but overall the league us dire....still....

Barcelona offers 85m pounds for Rooney......

http://goal.com/en/news/9/england/2009/11/08/1611460/barcelona-in-shock-85m-swoop-for-manchester-united-star

That's interesting. The article does point out that he's expressed an interest to stay at ManU, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Thanks.

Yeah.  Wish I could have seen the match, but they didn't have ESPN2 on anywhere in Banff so I had to settle for ESPN updates on my cell phone.  It was all I could do to not jump up and down, in the posh restaurant, when we scored the second goal.

And I agree about LFC.  I was worried, early on, what the absence of Alonso would do and I think it is quite clear.  We just aren't the same without someone like him.  Some fans didn't like him, but I think he was such a key player for us.  Last year was our year and we didn't get it done.  It will be a while before we get back there again.

You are right, though.  There are some good games on the horizon.

I know this thread has gone a ways, but I'm just chiming in now... when I saw the "REAL football", I figured I'd take a peek. I have yet to go through all the posts, so I don't know if there are any fellow SerieA fans here.

I'm a Rossoneri fan... Forza Milan!

Saw the game, Crowny, sorry. Brings up the discussion about ending such critical games on PK's, but I think it's the best solution. I guess I just don't see a better option. You can't leave them out there forever.

Yeah. And so many missed opportunities on both sides.  We had some decent creativity but could never finish.  It was painful to watch and I was there.  The atmosphere, though, was a blast.  Never been to anything like it.

Anyone catch Henry's handball against Ireland yesterday?

Can't believe something so blatant was missed.

or worse, 2 French players were offside. That's ridiculous.

Missed the France game, could only find repeats of US loss to Slovakia even thoug they were playing Denmark! Seems Henry admits the handball, but feels it's the ref's decision, not his. Got to admit, what player would go to ref and admit any foul! Maybe a case for instant replay? Boy, I hate that thought, but are you going to do?

Yeah.  Saw that on the replay as well.  And from what it sounds, Henry didn't handle it just once, but twice.  So in reality, there were three blown calls.

But I am still against Replay.  In any sport.

So I talked to a good friend of mine, in France, yesterday.  He essentially said that everyone he knows feels embarassed that France has made it through.  The country already knows that they don't stand a snowballs chance in hell of making it out of the first round and that the way they have made it in is as much of a National embarassement as Zidane's head butt.

I don't think that FIFA will sanction a replay, but I also don't think that the French fan base would protest too much.  Sounds as if they would almost rather one and hopefully lose it so they can save a little face.

I saw the replay this morning. The referee should have been in position to catch that one.

Also, wouldn't the linesman also be in position to see it?

FIFA says no replay. Wasn't there some discussion about having additional ref's during critical games? I think they were going to place them behind the goals. That would help.

Yeah, they are supposedly trying that in the Europa League.

In a perfect situation, one of the two would have been in close enough proximity to tell that it was a handball. The ref should have been within about 10-15 yards of the goal at that time.

ESPN showed a statement from Henry today admitting the handball and apologizing (to both the French and Irish fans) for it not being called. I respect him for that. Well, more than I respect Maradona...

Heh.  Funneh.

If you look at the whole replay, they also missed, what I think, was a pretty obvious off sides too.
