Mmmmmmmmmmm  Beer!

There are some days when it tastes so good.  However, I have yet to think one tastes good right after a race.  And so many races have free booze at the finish line.

Heh... I practically get bombed after races.  It's cold, it's liquid, and it makes the pain go away.  I love it.

On the bright side, I'm leaving work at 3:15 so I can watch my daughter swim.  It's do or die.  If they don't win today, the season is over.  I'm a nervous mother!

Good luck to them!  What events does she do?

My whine is that work kinda sucks at the moment.  Nothing specific - I'm just not enjoying it, even though I try to keep reminding myself that I'm lucky to have a job in the current economic situation etc.

Something positive / kind of a funny story... My wife and I decided no Valentine's Day presents this year, but I decided to get her something anyway which I ordered from Amazon (I know - I hate when people get a present after saying no presents).

Unfortunately she saw the box when it arrived and figured out that it was a V Day present.  After beating me up for a while (literally) she said "well what do you want?"

I pointed out that my current bike helmet is old and fits me terribly and is not safe etc so she laughed and rolled her eyes and said "fine - you can get a helmet."  I told her I knew the exact one that I wanted and that I would take care of ordering it.

Now I don't have to worry any more about justifying my new helmet when it comes... especially since I had already ordered it a couple of days before this all happened! Laughing oops.

Hi!  Today I did push-ups in the parking lot at 6:30am.   70-some.   Laughing

Maybe I can get back on board for the push-up challenge.

I am hoping to get at least a swim in this evening-a masters workout.  Maybe a bit of spinning if I can fit it in.

And the "I sucked it up and trained" award goes to Mel!  Push-ups in the parking lot.  That's awesome.

My whine for today is that I woke up psyched for a long ride outside...

Nope. mid 30-s and rain, not a happy combo for riding in, time to choose another movie and hop on the drainer. At least i'm not sore today!

Recovery - FOOD! Milk w/ whey and an apple usually. Peanut butter!

Mmm salt n vinegar chips... Mmm beer... Mmm food...

How in the world did I forget about peanut butter?  Straight out of the jar with a spoon and a huge glass of milk.  Delicious.

BeginnerMan - 2009-02-12 12:03 PM  "Clark says experiment and find out what works for you. She is a big promoter of using natural foods for recovery because they have vitamins, minerals and other health-protective qualities. "Commercial sports foods can offer convenience — but they are not better than chocolate milk, yogurt, fruit smoothie (made with fruit and yogurt) or any other carb-protein combination."

Yeah, I'm not saying the specialized "recovery" products are a scam or anything, because they can get the job done, and as I said, I'll mix a glass of Endurox on occasion.  But you get the same thing from real food, and it tastes a gazillion times better.  And really, you just follow the same habits that you would otherwise.  Protein, carbs, watch the fat.

Oh, but post race is a different story.  We have a local Oly distance race here, and my post race "recovery" meal is always a double bacon cheeseburger from this shack looking place back on a bay and a six pack.  Throw a big plate of steak cut fries on the side and I'm sleeping for hours after that.

As for post-workout -

A cold beer on the couch after showering is the best thing ever.

The meet is rescheduled for 10 am tomorrow (they're off school for president's weekend), so I guess I can use my excuse to bail on work for awhile in the morning.  If they win I get another excuse on Monday.  Of course, now I have to be nervous mother for another day.

She usually swims in the 50m free and the 200m and 400m free relays.  She's also done the 100m breaststroke in a couple of meets.  I'm not sure what she's swimming tomorrow.  They don't usually find out until right before the meet, and sometimes it changes depending on how the meet is going.  She's a freshman, so if they are winning by a decent margin she'll get to swim more and they'll let the upperclassmen rest.  If it is close, she might not get to swim.  It's a good group of kids with alot of team spirit.  I've never heard anyone complain if they don't swim.  They just want to win.

I'm going to have to stop reading this thread until I get home.  I ran out of food a couple of hours ago and I'm starving.  And now I'm craving beer and peanut butter.  (Not necessarily together.)

Daniel- a few things.
I see you are a fan of one of the best shows on TV. absolutely love that show.
two-your situation with ur wife for V-day was EXACTLY like mine.
first we were doing presents and the movies and a nice dinner (apparently i never take her out to nice dinners-im too busy paying the mortgage ANYWHOOOO)
then she came ot her senses and realized our money right now would be better spent on a super nice meal at home, no gifts, and going to the movies.
I love that woman

so im getting two organic grass fed filet mignons from fresh market, a 25 dollar bottle of wine, some choc. strawberries and im good to roll.

my whole thinking was why buy each other gifts? we can just buy ourselves gifts hahahaha.
so shes going to get herself some clothes, and im ordering about 100 bucks worth of crap i need from probikekit (red michelin pro3 tires, new tri top and shorts, some other clearance junk)
and that way we are both happy-i will however still get her flowers and a card.
I am a romantic at heart after all.......

Let us know how they get on!  I don't blame you for being nervous - Swim meets have such a tense, stressful atmosphere IMO - especially if the meet is close.  Almost harder to watch than to participate!

Cool.  I am in the 3rd wave(8:40) and Triathlynne is in the 7th(10am). She will be bringing a newbie friend too.

I am very short on $$ so I will not be doing the patty day's dash.

My husband and I long ago stopped going out on Valentine's Day or making big plans.  It is a hurried, crowded atmosphere.  And we generally don't do gifts for most of the same reasons listed already.  We like a quiet dinner after the kids are in bed w/ some wine.  I'm thinking some filets from the Organic Butcher ( a local butcher shop ), a veggie and starch and wine.  Plus I bought two chocolate truffles from a local artisan who makes his own fresh butter for each batch of truffles. YUM YUM - how I love chocolate!

But right now I am so tired that I scratched masters practice then shopping for my kid's birthday party so now I'm down to eating a pop tart on the couch and doing nothing.

I hope it's a chocolate pop-tart!  Yum!

My husband and I aren't buying each other anything for Valentines Day, and we probably won't do anything special.  We are thinking of taking the kids to the rock climbing gym.  Romantic, isn't it?  Undecided

They still have no power at the school so now the meet is at 4:00 tomorrow.  They are killing me with the delays.  My daughter doesn't seem the least bit nervous.  I think Daniel is right.  It is harder to watch than to participate.

This will be my first Valentines day with a ring on my finger and we're already going small.  She got her flowers early yesterday.  She got two "thanks but no thanks" letters from companies she sent her resume to, so I figured an early V-day bouquet wasn't a bad idea.  We'll just be exchanging cards and dining in.  I'm picking up a southwestern eggrolls appetizer from a place in town we like.  It actually first opened up in Starkville, MS when we were both in college, and we'd always end up there.  They have one down here in Jackson now, so we're reliving the past.  Then we're making slider burgers and baking some steak fries in the oven.  Our "big" idea is a Lost marathon.  She and my best friend have finally convinced me to start watching the show, so I'm doing a crash course in Seasons 1-4.  Plus, she says she's remembering all this stuff that she forgot or figuring out stuff she missed.

My daughter's meet got changed again!!!  Now it's Saturday morning.  Which means no leaving early today, and another day of nerve torture.  I'm wondering which god I've upset this week. Frown

Why do my coworkers think that Valentine's Day is a reason to bring all the chocolate they had at home into work?  Do they not understand that they can't leave chocoloate out in the open and expect me to leave it there?  More torture!  (Or not, since I've given up resisting.)

Hope everyone is enjoying their Friday the 13th.

We'll be celebrating with Buffalump steaks, treats from pix patisserie , cocktails, and exchanging of practical gifts - 500gb hard drive, and a new comforter, how romantic!

It's a busy weekend - cocktails out with a variety of folx tonight, major house cleaning and loooong ride tomorrow, and then Worst Day of the Year Ride (18 miles) and a run on Sunday!

You know that work is a dumping ground for all unwanted sweets.  Just wait til the Girl Scout cookies appear.  And to make things worse, the building management where I work buys obscene amounts of girl scouts and then places them in our cafeteria for several days.  UGH!!!  It is so hard to escape work junk food.

On a good note about the crappy economy, there are a lot less meeting food leftovers so I may save a few pounds there.  Why can't I just so NO!  LOL
