Hey group!

So I was wondering what training program everyone is using.  Or is it taboo to even suggest a potential program NOT from BT... =P

Ive looked over the free one here, and it looks very good.  Ive also been reading up on one sponsored by powerbar (http://www.ironmanpower.com/training/guide/) that, if nothing else, is teaching me a ton about training/race day fueling.  Definitely interesting reading for a noob like me.

If anyone has any suggestions, id love to hear!

First and foremost, Happy Birthday Jim.  Thanks for the great post.  Enjoy your brief time in Beantown and have a blast on your vacation.  We will be here when you get back.

Second, we have our first BBMG IM challenge finisher..... Scott - gobluedds.  Nice job.

Third, there is not rule around training plans.  I know many people use the Joel Freil's Triathlon Training Bible.  I use the training plans on here, just because I am lazy and haven't gone looking for others.  There are some threads in the Ironman forum about training plans if you do a search.  I am sure there aren't a lack of opinions on this subject.

By no means is it taboo to try a plan from someone else other than BT. I have quite a few friends from BT who get thier coaches to make there plans to be imported to thier blogs. THe bottom line is, what ever program gets you moving and works for you is the best one

KidIcarus - 2010-02-01 2:24 PM Hello.  I'm writing in this thread because, obviously, im looking to join a mentor program.  I see that this group is full, but was wondering if someone drops, or is inactive, maybe I could get in...?

Im interested in this group because of the mentor.  I am 35, so of comparable age, and am going to be in the Boston area until June or July.  Having someone locally, to maybe share a run or bike with on occassion, would be amazing.  I'm also going to be doing the same IM as Boston Beginner.  I've been living in Arizona for the last few years, and am just home (im from MA originally) for a few months, before heading back for good.  I'm looking forward to 'home court advantage' and could even supply tips about the course and updates as race day gets closer.

I've never done a triathlon before, but have run, on and off, my whole life.  7 weeks ago I made up my mind to do the Tempe Iron Man, and I'm proud to say I've already put forth a considerable effort.  I'm down 15lbs since my start, and my body is starting to develop the base I'm going to need to pull of this endeavor.  Ive done plenty of homework, already, but it would be of great benefit having someone check in on me from time to time and to bounce ideas/concerns off of.

Let me know, please!

wow, just went back and read new to triathlon and IM this season! First thing I have to say is, be careful not to get hurt ramping up too quickly. Having a good run background will help, but being able to run off the bike is the key. I would make sure you get a bunch of bike run bricks in. You might want to consider something like a 10 minute run after every bike ride, just so you can get those legs thinking right. Personaly, you have chosen a huge undertaking. Not saying it can not be done, but be careful. I would focus on building up your bike and swim numbers while maintaing that running base. Good luck and keep asking those good questions..

BTW, happy birthday all.

Congrats.  The first one is always the hardest because you don't know what to expect.  Add in the weather conditions you had, I think you did great.  I will send you the race report for my first race.  It was close to yours, and I had perfect weather conditions.  You will do better next time, I promise.  Now get training

Hi, thanks! I'd love to see that race report- still feeling a bit down about it...Been training well this week though...

A little slow yesterday?  No posts.  How is everyone doing?  Besides someone who is en route to Puerto Rico, how is everyone else's week going?  I have had a good week so far.  Been working out 10 days straight.  Feel really good.  May take a rest day today.  I will see how I feel later.  I am getting to the point where I feel guilty if I take a day off.  I suspect people are starting to pick training plans or starting training plans in the next couple of weeks for the upcoming season.  Keep us posted on your questions and how everything is going.

Don't be shy.

Felt good to get back out on the road yesterday.  We finally got a day when the sun came out and it wasn't bitter cold.  The short days are really starting to get old.  I need spring!  Anyone else having trouble getting motivated to get out and exercise after coming home from work?  I really find that if I can't get my run in during the day it's really tough to make myself get out there after I get home.  Mornings most days are not an option for me and lunch hours are too often too short to get a good run or swim in.  How do you guys keep in the game mentally to get back out there?

Me too, hard to get in a workout at the end of the day! Usually I am tired and it is hard to be motivated to do it.  Although I do start feeling guilty if I haven't done anything so that helps get me going.  If anything this group show that we are all alike and have the same ups and downs.

I feel like dad wants to talk.
I'm back to work tonight and just finished a run in the gym. Ran 3.5 miles and that was .5 more than I wnated but I was distracted by conversation in the gym. The good thing is that my IT band issue seems to be resolving and that gets me a bit motivated because I am a runner by default. I have not run that far since Nov. and it feels good to run again.
I'm in wk 9 of BT's 16 wk Olyimpic plan and doing pretty good. The long trainer rides are tough but the endurance is building well. My goal race in Aug is Timberman 70.3 and as luck would have it as I finish this plan I hacve 20 wks to the race. BT happens to have a 1/2IM plan that is 20 wks,so that is my big plans for the year. The regional club I belong to has weekly Tri spints for $10 and I hope to do as many of those as I can make.
I will be purchasing a bike in the next couple months (hopefully sooner than later) and that will dictate what if any more money will be spent on additional races. As always in keeping with my #1 goal Balance in life. Family needs to comes first and Race money\toys second.
I would like to thank everyone here for the motivation to keep going as it does help sometimes getting to the workouts when you really might not want to. The challege was also a good motivator too as friendly competition.
Train hard, fear none and have fun.

balance is so important in our sport. First the balance in training with all three sports. Then add little details like transition practice ( yes it is good to use a brick to practice under 5 minute transitions ). We also need to keep our familys happy too. My wife has felt like a tri widow more than once. Mostly on the year I was training for a 1/2 Iron. 4 hour rides take a lot of time and we need to keep little details like that in mind.

I would also like to thank this group for helping keep me motivated right now. Personal issues are an extream emotional drag right now, but this group helps keep me moving. Thanks again

Too quiet group! Page 2 of the mentor thread: BAD.

So I'm more sore today than I was all day yesterday for the day off! Didn't expect that...

Those of you that take days off (Seren you can skip this post =P), do you do any activities?  I'm wondering if I might have been better served walking or doing yoga maybe...? just get the blood pumping a little...?

advice?

Days off are kind of relative. If you training plan dose not call for something in a SBR, there are a bunch of different options. First, is the day off schedualed to let you recover? Is your body sore and in need of rest. This is a good day to work on some stretching. It is so underated. My best season had a bunch of random stretching added. If the day is schedualed, and you feel the need to do something, consider lifting, or a non SBR activity. Doing nothing is ok, but it is actualy hard to do absolutely nothing. The season can be very long, and we are all loving how we are beginning to feel, but a break is needed to not only let the body heal, but let the mind wander a litte to Hope this helps

Not every day is SBR - I lift,I have gone hiking, gone to yoga, etc...If you keep working the same muscles then you run the risk of injury

i complete my second race of the season - it was a 15K and although i didn't do quite as well as i would have liked i was mostly pleased.  i felt good throughout the race, but my pace did slow down at about mile 6.  i am not yet at a  minute mile for that long of a race which is where i would like to be.  my big race of the season before i get more serious about triathlon training is on march 7th.

any suggestions for how to speed up in 4 weeks?

Hey Hey, everyone!  wanted to let you know that I am still trying to keep in touch with the group.  Had a spare minute to drop a note.  Going great down here in the tropics, ocean swimming everyday and running in the mornings with my wife--life really is good.  Especially when on vactation!!  Glad to see everyone is doing fine--but a few of us are slowing down--whats up with that?  Well the beach is calling me--talk with you all again soon.

Hi everyone. Had agreat day training with tri club IM athletes. Very pleased that iwas able to keep for 40 miles. Got a 2mile in after. Still feeling good. Eating and hydrating like crazy. Burned over1000 calories out there today. Hoping I can still run on Monday Congrats to Charlotte for #2 down! You are still in the building phase leading up to your "A" race

Got some good training in this week. Good run on Wednesday and some strength training on Thursday. My legs are still sore from lifting and then tennis this morning. I started looking at plans, i need to get one loaded to get some focus. I've found over the past two years that the plans i've loaded have mostly been overkill for me and trying to keep up with them causes injury. Couple of interesting events possibly coming up. I've been recruited to a "Ragnar Relay" team - it's a team of 12 relay running race from New Haven to Boston. And a friend asked me today about doing the 5 boroughs bike tour.  Hope everyone's having a good weekend !

I found a new training plan that i really like. Oly - Balanced Life, is what it's called. The daily plans are very simple, and it has weekly tips on how to find time and focus on what's important. it even includes suggested reading! The only thing i'm concerned about is the running volume to start off. The plan has 3 run workouts per week  (one being part of a brick). The first weeks total is something like 12 to 15 miles. I've only been running onceto twice per week for a total of 3 to 5.5 miles per week. I don't think i want to all of the sudden ramp up to triple my weekly mileage. Any suggestions, taking into consideration i've had an itbs issue with my right knee (2 years ago) and some type of issue with my left hip last season. My thinking is that i will try to do all of the workouts as stated, but back off on the total miles for each.

The only other thing is that the brick is on Saturday (long run on Sunday). I could rearrange  the days, but i play at least 2 hours of tennis on Saturday morning, so doing a brick after that might not be a good idea. I'm thinking of skipping the saturday workout all together, at least for the first few weeks. It's a 9 week program, so i would be starting it over again in nine weeks. By that time i may have worked my mileage up to the point where i can follow the planned mileage.

Any ideas ??

Just letting everyone know I'm not dead or unmotivated, I'm just sitting on my hands waiting to heal.  I made it much harder on myself by not being patient in the first place.   I swear I could have recovered from open heart surgery easier than this! (not that I ever want to find out)

I think I've finally got all of the infection taken care of so hopefully I can start back up mid-week.

Does anyone know what is considered an "open wound" for the pool?  If it is scabbed over, does that count? Sorry to be gross, I'm just curious.

i think it would depend on the size of the wound (is swimming likely to cause motion that would make it open again?)and the location - see comment above plus whether it is totally uncovered or covered also, how likely is it that the scab will soften in the pool and partially opendoes the wound in anyway look infected - purulent discharge, redness, edema/inflammationthe easiest thing to say is wait until scab is gone - but depending on above issues that may or may not be necessary
