carrie639 - 2010-03-08 8:48 AM First, how did you not get dizzy doing it??

Second, how did you not lose track of counting laps??

Does anyone else have trouble in the pool counting laps?  I am always off by +/-1-2 laps Sealed

I'm pretty good at zoning out... Ran without headphones too.
Garmin  kept my mileage... but I count by moving lanes every lap

In the pool I always just do the ole' "1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1" all the way down and "2,2,2,2,2" and so forth... that and the nice timex watch

I usually do that with swimming too, but then I get to thinking about something else, then was it "5,5,5,5,5,5, . . ." or "6,6,6,6,6,6, . . ." HA, HA - that is why I am almost always +/- 1-2 laps

So how does that swim watch work.  How does it keep track?  How does it know if you go faster or slower?  Is there anything you can just hang on the end of the pool at the black + and hit it???

I just get so bored swimming . . . partly because I keep forgetting my mp3 players, then all counting is just hoping cuz you totally lose track wanting to sing along

Great effort at that run.  I would have quit when the going got that tough.

I got a pair of wool cycle socks for riding and I started running in them to keep my feet warm.  Turns out they are very comfortable for running too and fairly thick so they may help with blisters too.

Sounds like a real blast to end a 5k with a hill climb.

Swim bike today felt pretty good. We are thinking of doing a trail brick this Friday, 12 mile ride and a 2 or 3 mile run. We take the bike officers who come to train on a trail ride at carvins cove which is a local water source great trails so we are thinking of going out there. Looking forward to it. Just need to be careful and not twist an ankle before the 1/2, close the other day but I was really pushing the pace til I hit the hill. Water stop at 2.1 and I was under 18 minutes, that tells you how I finished????

Good lord after my 1/2 mary Sunday the inside of my right knee has been giving me some grief... Done some RICE and foam rolling, today feels better... going for a short run tonight so I guess that'll tell me extremely quickly whether it's just a pain or if I hurt something.  Hoping for the former.

Swam 4k last night, felt great, although I'll never understand why people who are just going to make out with their bf/gf in the pool give me mean looks when it's clearly posted on the wall "POOL IS FOR SWIMMING LAPS ONLY" oh well.

So I was thinking (here are my notes on tonights swim) . . . has anyone ever drowned because they cramped so bad they couldn't get themself to safety???

Was cramping with pool being so cold tonight. On the 6x100 cramped in the 2nd 50 so much so I could barely make it to the side of the pool (and I am in the first lane). Tell me what are lifeguards for if they don't recognize that you are in trouble. Going up the ladder and the therapy pool helped a ton, feel great now. While cramping, I had a back calf cramp with a front ankle cramp, so could pull out of one cramp without aggravating the other.  I was actually almost in tears . . and no one came to my rescue!!!!

my mom (an excellent swimmer / lifeguard) almost drowned in a 4ft pool in our back yard when I was younger. Got a cramp in her hamstring and couldn't stand up it hurt so bad. She was able to float to the side... shook her up badly, and she will not go in a pool without other people any more. I can see it being dangerous... If it came down to it, I think I could grab the lane dividers and keep myself from drowning though...maybe

glad to hear your ok!

I've been to San Diego many times during the month of March over the years--and the weather always sucks.  You go expecting 70's and sunshine, and you find, windy, cold (well, for So Cal anyway) 50ish days.  Of course as I'm getting ready for Day 3 of the conference I was attending, the weather guy on the news reports that the weekend will be warming up and they'll be looking at 80 by Monday.  Sheesh.

Totally fell off the wagon with my training.  I got some trainer work in on Monday morning before my flight.  Took my running shoes but the agenda was fuller than expected, the weather was disappointing, and I just couldn't muster the energy to hit the fitness center.  I'm trying not to beat myself up for my dereliction and instead am telling myself I got some much needed rest.  The break in workouts must have helped.  I got a 4 mile tempo run in this morning, and it felt pretty good.  Will hit the trainer again tomorrow morning, and then I have a St. Patrick's Day race (a local 4 miler) on Saturday.  I hope I feel as good on Saturday as I did this morning!

Glad to see everyone's training is progressing.

Cramps are never fun in the pool (or anywhere else for that matter).  It seems like poolside lifeguards are never all that vigilant during lap swim times

I like the positive spin you are putting on things.  Hopefully the extra rest means a great race this weekend!

Sock details: Defeet Blazewool.  Love these socks.  Great in the winter and they say cooler in heat but I haven't tried that yet, but supper comfortable.  I won't run without them, and they're great for riding too.  Purchased from Performance bike store near me, bu they have a website.

Got a pair of "Feetures" and "Balega's" running socks from local running store to try out running.  They also suggested using powder which is the only thing I have not tried yet.  I also got some KT tape for my shin splints.  It is supposed to resist everything, so maybe I am strategically place it over my blister Surprised

So got 5 miles in today (with a little walking).  No blisters - YIPPIE, but I don't know how on earth you people run for fun or enjoyment. Running on the treadmill must be what is killing me.  Even with loud music and a tv on I still stuggle with constantly checking miles and time.  It kills me.  I think I really need to get outside soon, plug in the ipod and enjoy the scenery!!!!

Congratulations on the five miles!  That's a great accomplishment considering your recent struggles.  Looks like the new socks might be working.

I'm one of those weird people who actually doesn't mind running on the treadmill.  Something about the lack of distraction that really allows me to zone out, get some good thinking done, or really focus on technique.  Still, nothing beats running outside--especially in beautiful surroundings.  I would definitely encourage you to get outdoors.  I think you'll find the time just blows by.

I am also find that my whole body is sore from the run yesterday  . . .  hips, stomach muscles, quads, etc.  No wonder people lose weight and get skinny running. Sealed

I am still not buying the whole "running is fun" and I am still have problems convincing myself that soon as I get outside away from home I won't have to worry about going to the bathroom.  I am terrified that I will have to go to the bathroom and there won't be one around.  How do you get over that?

Wow look like you keep on plugging that is impressive.

My wife struggles with this too.  She is working on her nutrition to see if she can be more predicable for the call of nature to avoid those challenges during the run.

Running is the hardest for me too.  Since I started running I've had about two runs that were as close to fun as I think it can be.  As you train you improve.  Run training can brings fast improvement but it easily at too high an intensity and cause injury or burnout.   Some runs need to be at slower endurance pace  (longer runs) and some at tempo pace (just below race pace).   Endurance runs do not have to be killers you should be able to speak a parts of a sentences.  Best if you run with someone and talk about stuff.

Getting the feel for the speed is an important part of learning to run.  In my training group we run a two mile time trial and find out our race pace.  Then the other run paces are percentages of that time adjusted to a min/mile basis.  If you want I can give you the percentages based on a time trial.  With the right plan you can improve run, but you need to give it time for those running muscles and blood vessels to adjust.

I dropped the music when a train.  This help me get more in tune with my body and my breathing pattern and helps me keep in the zone I'm training.  Now that I run with others we talk some, but not on those tempo or time trail days.

Glad to hear you have made some progress with the blisters.  I'm guessing getting outside will help you some.  I find it easier to forget about the time and miles when its not staring me in the face on the treadmill display.
