Great job Mia!  I hit the 1000m milestone yesterday too.  That's a big relief for me -- my sprint race has an 800m swim, and my feeling is, if I can get through twice that without stopping in a pool, I will have the base stamina to get through a 800m open water swim.   I really want to start working on my technique some more -- going to watch that total immersion video again.  I know I am not particularly efficient right now.  One thing at a time, right?

I did a 4K run today and before that I did 30 consecutive push-ups. 30! Laughing

Two weeks ago I could do 20. So just 2 weeks on the 100 push-ups program is paying off.

Hi everybody,

Today is a non-training day so I'm doing a little evaluating.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with my progress so far.  I've been able to increase my volume and get a little faster swimming.  I haven't been able to lose as much weight as I expected I would have at this point.  While I know I've added some muscle, I think the bigger problem is my appetite has increased with the additional training.  I'm going to continue to be aware of what, and how much, I'm eating and hope to drop an extra 10 .lbs over the next couple of months but I think it's going to be harder than I expected it to be.

So how is everybody else doing on their goals?

Art, the weight thing is sooo hard!  I have lost, but not as much as I expected, either.  I've been tracking my food lately, and that's helping me identify where I am not doing the best job with fueling.  When work gets busy, my eating goes to crap -- I skip lunch, gorge on dinner, eat late at night.  Ugh.  Other than that, though, I am doing great in that my training volume is about where I would like it to be.  I am slow as molasses in each discipline but the only way I can think of to improve that is just keep getting the workouts in.  <insert shrug here>.  And try not to be discouraged by my speed or lack thereof.

Gooooooooooooal!

Actually Doing It - I've surprised myself with this one. I am actually doing 4-6 workouts a week. I need to be doing more, but even this seemed impossible before I started.

Swimming - Improves every week, and lately has been improving by leaps and bounds. I am actually most hopeful about nailing this one, and it's still something I'm having a lot of fun doing.

Biking - I've made myself do it enough to where I'm not falling off the rollers anymore (okay, maybe once or twice a session, but it used to be once or twice a minute!) and I'm making steady gains in duration, speed, and distance. Now if I could just get all my, um, parts configured.

Running - Yeah, this needs work. Seeing as how I've done it all of once since December.

Signing Up For A Race - erm

Doing A Race - erm

(Edited because BT sometimes decides to DESTROY ALL MY SPACING. Grr!)

I  have lost a little weight but want to get down about 10 lbs to 140.

Swimming freestyle is hard. But I'm doing my best and it feels a little better every time I do it. Still breathing is my weak spot.

Bikeing, hmmm, I wish I had a bike. I'm thinking of renting a bike for a weekend and try to ride outside a little to get the feel for it.

Running feels like I'm getting slower and slower. I have a 5K race comming up now in 2 weeks and after that I will know more how I can perform in a race.

Overall I think I'm doing great on my plan and I feel like 4-6 workouts a week is great. I don't think you need more then that for a sprint.

I talked to a guy at the pool this morning, he does sprints around here and he told me he got a little faster when he stopped doing 6 workouts every week. He takes every 4 weeks as a resting week and slows the training down to 40% that week. (But he also does 1 sprint race evey month).
It sounded like good edvice to me.

Okay, I went outside today and fixed that running thing. First outdoor run of my training.

Stupid runner question for y'all... if I get what feels like a stitch up where my neck meets my shoulder, what am I doing wrong?

Rebecca, I am no expert, but you are probably hunching your shoulders without even realizing it.  I find i do that when it is cold out; just kind of stiffen up against the cold.  Definitely try to loosen up by doing basic arm and shoulder stretches (can be done while running, even -- one arm across body, then other, shoulder shrugs in either direction).  That *should* help.

Hi everyone

Sorry I've been off the planet last couple of weeks - started in general practice which I'm finding really busy.  Lunch breaks have been mostly non-existent, so basically have hardly done any training at all.  As well as that I just sold my house, so have been desperately hunting for somewhere to live as I need to move next week!
So training has been shelved as I need to pack up a decade worth of stuff and move in the next week.  But I'll hang around and hopefully get back into things as soon as everything settles down.  I MISS training so much!

Melyssa, hope your move goes smooth and that you find a good new house.

Today I did a 5K run (3,2 miles) in 30:42. It's not my PB but close. I'm happy to see results from my training and I think if I want to I can actually push past my PB (29:12). Today was not a fast pushy run, so if I try real hard I think it will be possible.

I cut and colored my hair today and she did curls in it too. I love curls!

I'll try to take a picture tonight so you can see.

Hi everybody!

Rebecca - Good job running and "actually doing it".  Glad to hear the swimming is getting easier.  My guess is Dineen is right about your shoulders when you run being too tense.  I always try to think about relaxing different body parts as I run.  I'll focus on my neck and shoulders, arms, lower back, etc.  It's amazing how just thinking about relaxing allows you to do it.  Another thing I found that works with the shoulders is to think about dropping my elbows.  It automatically relaxes them.

Dineen - You're right, the best way to improve is to "keep getting the workouts in", there isn't any subsitute for consistancy.

Mia - Have you told your friends you are looking for a bike?  I know a lot of people that have one in their garage that never sees the road.  Maybe you could borrow one until you get your own.  Just a thought.

Your friend from the pool has a good plan regarding the recovery weeks.  Your body needs a chance to catch up when you've been training hard.  A couple of days of active recovery on a regular schedule is a good thing.

Melyssa-Wow, you've got a lot on your plate!  Good luck finding a new place.

ALL - You never need to apologize to anybody (including yourself) for your workouts.  Pushing to reach a goal is good but I think we should all remember to appreciate where we are and the progress we are making.  If not, you miss a lot of the joy of "the journey".  Just my opinion.

Have a great day!

Art, yes I was just thinking about my friend who has a bike. I think we are the same size, so maybe I can try hers. I'll ask her next time I see her. It's good, she's my neighbor too.

Beautiful run Mia! Those are so exhilarating, aren't they?

Congrats also on 1K in the pool. That's a big deal especially since you just took crawl on.

As far as the HR--honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. However, remember to keep most of your running at a conversational pace--that you could carry a conversation. To test this when I'm biking or running without a partner, I often sing

And yes, EVERYONE should be significantly pulling back their training volume every 3rd or 4th week. It's a critical principle in every sport and necessary to actually making the best gains.

Was that in a training plan? or did life just intervene, as it will?

Dineen, is there any way you could take some swimlessons say at a YMCA, or hire a good friendly high school freestyler to coach you? You totally ROCKED THE MANATEE HOUSE with the mile swim, and you are right to think of how to progress in the next 7 weeks. I think a session or two with a knowledgeable person would make a huge difference.

If all else fails, try to get video and post.

So I found a home Yeah!!! Thanks Beth and Yanti Smile  Here's a little about me:

My name is Jessie, I'm 28 and a mother of a 9yr old boy and 2yr old girl.  I joined BT in Sep 2009 but my Tri efforts quickly went by the way-side as I realized childcare issues were more problematic than the actual training.  Alas, I have that fixed thanks to Early morning daycare and the Child Minding at my YMCA.

Experience

My experiece in Triathlon is at the Junior level (think KOS), I started my training when I was 7 and from the age of 9-14 was coach by Ironmen.  After that life sorta got in the way and I became fairly dormant as far as exercising went.  Both my father and sister are triathletes and 6x Ironman Canada Finishers, I will be at IMC this year as race support for them and their team, it will be my first year as race support but my 10th time going to IMC.  Every single year I'm in tears during Ironman Canada because I am so proud of every single person that is in that water back stroking or pedalling through the quad cramps or just shuffeling the feet on the run so that at least they are moving in a forward direction...I am extremely emotional when it comes to Ironman Canada and am out there until the very last person crosses that finish line and as the hours tick away I become louder and louder so that, even if for a brief second, I can take that athletes attention away from the pain and put it on their accomplishment thus far and hopefully give that little bit of encouragement to someone who might be thinking "I just can't".

So Why Am I Here?
I want nothing more than to cross the finish line and hear "Jessie xxx YOU ARE AN IRONMAN!!!" It has been my life dream and I'm done dreaming - it's time to realize that dream.  So in 2011 I will enter myself into Ironman Canada and until that moment I'm going to train as hard as I possibly can to prepare myself.  I need lots of help and guidance as I have tonnes of questions, and in lieu of experience I can offer encouragement.

Hi Jessie and Welcome. Yanti and Beth are the best. Sounds like you've got the triathlon bug in your genes!! How wonderful you've been exposed to it at such a young age. There's no doubt in my mind you'll hear those words "Jessie--- you are an Ironman!" It will be fun to watch your journey.

Melyssa -- How's that move coming?

I agree with the swim coaching advice, too! Yanti knows her stuff.

Yea for Art and swimming, too!!

Only a bit over 2 weeks until my 70.3. Yowee! One last long run on Sat. and long ride on Sunday and taper me baby!

Happy Weekend Everyone!

Thanks for the welcomes.  I'm having a really tough time figuring out diet right now - a reeeallly tough time.  I'm 5'5 and 2 days ago 111 lbs and today it's 109, and that's with minimal exercise, nothing compared to what will start as of Monday.  I drop weight just looking at a scale and it makes me very unhealthy and lacking energy.  I increased my food to 6 small meals per day with 2 recovery snacks after my 2 work outs and it's left me feeling painfully full, even as I type I can't do dinner because I'm too painfully full from lunch (a soup and a salad) and my post train snack (a 1/2 banana and a yougurt w/tsp of all bran).  This will likely subside around 8-9pm and then I can eat again without feeling the cramps.

Any food suggestions for high calorie low fat diet but in smallish quantities?  Or is that the completely wrong way to go.  I should also add that my body fat is sitting steady at 18.9%. That info is from one of those scales you enter your height and age into then step on it and it spits out your weight and body fat so I don't know exactly how reliable that is.  I really want to get down to a 12% or so body fat, hence the low fat food request.
