wgraves7582 - 2010-02-22 9:44 AM Meeting got cancelled -  no one called in - yeah!!

Now I am pigging out.  I just had a bagel with cream cheese and some chicken/potatoes!

I am famished for some reason!

Dude - everything in moderation. Only one week left of the weight loss challenge.

I am pigging out in moderation - lol

When the body calls for food in this deep sense (instead of just bored hunger pains) I feed it.

Now I am plotting when I am going to make my oatmeal!

I would like to pig out in moderation right now. I got hot wings on the brain.

Hi Gouhls. I'm just checking in. Had to come get my daily Ann-spiration. (And I can procrastinate going grocery shopping and errand running if I'm here....)

WOOHOO for sleep!

Let's look at the bright side here Amy, if you didn't send them to school every day they would be home ALL THE TIME!

SO true. And we have this weird year-round school thing here with the elementary school kids. They are in school for 9 weeks, then out for 3 weeks, in school for 9, out for 3... you get the picture. I have 2 more weeks until my son is home with me for 3 weeks. The middle schools use a traditional school calendar, so it's just the 2 of us when he's "off track". Then for most of my daughter's summer break, he's still in school. The weirdest part is that not all of the schools in the valley do this. Just the school district I live in.

That's odd that the elementary and middle schools aren't on the same schedule. I'm going to assume they are doing a trial here.

Nope. Been that way for a long time. 15 years or so, I believe. It's our district's way of cramming more kids into a school than it was designed to hold. With the track system, only 3/4 of the kids are in the school at any one time. I guess it's our little way of dealing with the problem of too many kids, too little funding. And the district I live in is the 2nd largest in the state. It was the largest until last year when a chunk of the district voted to withdraw and form their own district--taking half of the assets and most of the commercial tax base with them. Funding in my school district just dropped from $1600 per student per year to $1200 per student per year. Funding in the new district went up to $2200 per student. Add to that the poor economy and the fact that what's left of our school district is in a part of the valley that is growing at an alarming rate (therefore the small tax base), and a republican culture of not ever raising taxes without a long drawn out fight (no matter what), it's no wonder we can't keep up with the demands for space for all the kids. We just can't build schools fast enough to keep up with the growth out here, and the funds just aren't there. It's actually really scary to think what the schools will look like in another year or two. Class sizes are going up by another 4 students per classroom for the next school year, and the district has to fire 500 employees (250 of them teachers) because of the budget deficit. And they are saying a year from now will be the same again, if not worse.I am still fighting with my daughter about going to private school for high school. At least there we know there will be consistency in funding and, hopefully, class size and educational programs. Sorry about the the book--it's just something that's going on right now, and is HUGE for my kids. And my hubby's out of town right now, so I have no one else to talk about it with. Thanks for listening.

I'll be at the Y tonight while my daughter is at cheerleading. She can take a guest tonight, so she is taking her cousin.

My ear is bothering me again so I think I'm just going to lift weights and not get in the pool. I want to pick up some ear plugs and try them to see if they help at all.

No problem. It always irritates me to see budget cuts in schools especially when they involve staff reductions.

We live in the middle of nowhere, and our school isn't large but it is maxed out. There is a big fight going on right now because someone wants to put in a 500 lot mobile home park in the district. People are outraged, my husband and I included, because of how many kids they are estimating will flood the school district, but because they are mobile homes the tax dollars won't be there to go to the schools.

Here we pay a propery tax, based on the value of your home, and that goes toward school funding. Adding 500 low budget trailers is not going to add much revenue into the district to cover the cost of the kids.

The property tax is part of how the schools are funded here, as well. But there's also tax revenue from the businesses within the district boundaries as well. Twice in the last year there was public outcry/rage/distress over the district asking for a raise in property taxes that would amount to $10 per month increase on a property worth $200,000. You would think that the end of the world was nearing or something. It was ridiculous. Median price of a home in my area is about $250,000-300,000. Somehow people here think that they can have 8+ kids, move out to this end of the valley, and then expect to have plenty of schools with little to no overcrowding, the best teachers, and to have their taxes LOWER than the more mature areas of the valley, with little or no commercial development to make up the difference. Utah is already last, or almost last, in the nation on per-student funding. It sucks. I don't like paying taxes any more than the next guy, but I know you don't get something for nothing, KWIM?

Does it look like the mobile home park is going to go in, or is there enough complaint that it's iffy?

Um... you get what you pay for. If you don't want to pay taxes, that go toward the funding of the school how can you expect to have anything good? Homeschool your 8 kids or quit popping em out.

I just finished a book about a woman who escaped the FLDS cult. I am very anti-women being baby making machines right now, more than normal.

The PA zoning laws are horrible. If you want to put something in, and you have all the paperwork, there is nothing the township can do to stop you. So far they have been late or missed handing in all of the paperwork so they can't do anything yet. They also have not completed some traffic and water studies they should have. I am really hoping it does not go in.

The Carolyn Jessop one. I was just ticked off the entire time I was reading it. It is all just a bunch of brain washing. And the amount of abuse that goes on is just appalling.

Her oldest daughter is now living on the YFZ ranch in Texas. Oprah went and interviewed her last year.  I was lucky enough to meet Carolyn when she first came to SLC with her kids, and then I saw her again about a year later. She amazes me. She was so normal both times. Her kids had an interesting drawl. But then again I guess we all have an accent, right? I own that book, simply because I wanted to help support her in some small way. There are people (like her oldest daughter) who claim she is lying in the book about what happened to the kids when they went to Colorado City for visits. She's not. It does make you want to go tear someone's eyes out, doesn't it?

As I was getting near the end of the book I knew the daughter would go back and it upset me. I just don't understand how anyone could be so blind to the abuse, or think that that is how things are supposed to be. I was totally amazed that she was able to safely get away, with 8 kids, and make a life for herself.

After reading the book I was amazed that when the YFZ ranch in Texas was raided a few years ago none of the women, at least that I know of, took that opportunity to break away.

Only the most brain washed cream of the crop were taken to YFZ. That's probably why. In the daughter's interview with Oprah, there were a couple moments when she seemed, I don't know, afraid to say the wrong thing?

givemashot - 2010-02-22 12:15 PM Boy, I'm sounding a little agitated today aren't I? The party at Neal's must've taken its toll more than I thought. Maybe I just need a nap. Or another party at Neal's. Yep that's it. I need another Gouhlie get-together.

How about Ghoulie group naps at Neal's?

I like the way you think, Ann!

So basically she lied to Oprah and all of her viewers because she was afraid to say the wrong thing. I'm just shaking my head.

Why should Neal have all the fun. We could rotate the naps around the country, and parts of Canada (I didn't forget you Melindy).
