What method do you guys use to figure out your max heart rate?  Now that I have my new Garmin, (got for my birthday today) I have to figure out how to use it!

The general formula is 220-age but I had a fitness test done (on a spin bike) to give me mine which put me at 19years old in that formula - LOL! So, the formula isn't accurate for those who are fit!

Peggy, here is an article from BT on how to do an LT test to determine your HR zones.  I did one last year, but just for running, I haven't done one for the bike.

Thanks! It's always easy to smile when the race is over!
The entrance fee was $85 (which is average around here), but they had a $25 off coupon on their facebook page so that was nice.
The race was really fun. All the ladies were so nice and happy. It made smiling much easier!

Jordan - I can't belileve you swam in Lake Michigan without a wet suit!  I used to live in Wisconsin and I don't think Lake Michigan EVER gets warm!  Didn't you say it was 68 degrees?  You deserve extra points for that one!!!  Of course, I live in Florida and if the water is below 80 it feels cold to me - haha.

I am always hot, so I think I had the advantage there. There were ladies waiting to start that were shivering! I couldn't believe it. Considering I went in a couple days before and it was 56, 68 was really nice!  Just an advantage of loving the cold weather! I would probably melt in Florida.

Oh no... it finally happened, the mentor group is ending, NOOOOOOOOOO!  Eventually we will be archived, so you will still be able to access this thread.  I am willing to still be a mentor to y'all... I think we've all become friends and hopefully we can still stay in touch and inspire each other.  It looks like there will be more mentor groups starting in December, kind of an off-season mentorship.  So many of you have such strong work ethics, I know you will continue to shine with or without me.  I hope I've been able to keep you motivated and inspired to adopt this crazy sport.  I will always be here to answer any questions or concerns you may have and you absolutely will not hurt my feelings if you want to move onto another mentor the next time, in fact, I'm not sure if I will mentor then or not, it's a little harder when I'm working.  I love all of you, you have taught and inspired ME soooo much....  (but I'm NOT quitting you!)

This makes me sad!  Frown  I knew it would officially end someday, but not so soon!!!  I've come to look forward to inspiring and being inspired by this entire group!  There have been many tough mental days that I've wanted to throttle back, walk etc...and I knew I couldn't log that kind of result because of you guys watching over me.  Hilde, you have been absolutely awesome during this whole experience.  You have no idea how much you've meant to me and the rest of us.  You've spent countless hours inspiring us and being and exemplary example of leadership!!!  I hope you mentor next time too because you are able to create a wonderful online culture and you can have a positive affect on the Tri community.  The rest of you crazies......hmmmmmm....I'm gunna be the cyber stalker - YOU CAN'T GET RID OF ME!!!!!  Honestly, I hope we retain our friendships and continue to hold each other accountable and inspire each other to move forward!  I may just show up to each of your houses and camp in your back yards....haha...

BOO HOO

Love and Kisses,

Wilson!

I will continue to be checking in on you all,  and this thread will still be here for us to post, so in a way it's NOT OVER...  if you go up to the top thread you will see where the moderators have said this Spring mentorship has finished, but it's up to me and all of you if we want to still continue, just in an unofficial capacity.  In any case, continue all your hard work, and please keep checking up on each other's (and me too) training logs and inspiring each other, we've become a pretty close group!

AND on another note... we have RACERS this weekend!!!

Wilson has another BIG DANCE on Saturday, he's been brushing up on his dancing skills and it seems he's looking to get drunk after the prom.... hmmmm.

Denise and I have tri's on Sunday and Marsha has her first OLYMPIC tri on Sunday!!

So SadFrown to see the group officially end.  But I like the idea of keeping the forum and the inspires going.  I'll be around and I hope that everyone keeps checking the logs and sending the inspires.  This has been a great group.

Good luck to all the racers this weekend!  I will be watching you!! Cool

I'm just back from vacation so chiming in a bit late.  I have now been a member of 3 different mentor groups and watched 2 others and I just have to congratulate you all on having the best menotr group that I have ever seen.  Obviously, part of that comes from Hilde's exceptional enthusiam and guidance but just as big a part a part comes from all of your participation.  Without participation and buy in from the members of a mentor group, it quickly falls apart for everyone involved so congratulations to each and every one of you.

You all have come so far so I hope that you will feel good about your progress and continue on this journey together.  It will only make it more rewarding!

Ok, I've got a question:  Why can't I get my heart rate up on my bike ride?  Today I rode for two hours and I was supposed to stay in the upper zone 2 which for me would have been between 120-137.  Sometimes I felt like I was dying - my legs couldn't push anymore and my lungs were stressed, but my heart rate averaged 117!  What is my problem?  Am I supposed to have different zones for running and for biking?  Granted, I was tired after the first hour and so I didn't ride as fast, but even during the first  hour, I never even went over the 137 (high end of zone 2) even when I was going all out and feeling like I couldn't go even a tiny bit faster.  Why?  Any thoughts would be helpful.

Interesting question... and I will be interested in the expert's answer.  A couple of  questions to Peggy, would you say you are riding in a low gear or a high gear?  Are you riding in flat country or hilly?

Could your monitor not be making good contact when you are riding?  Maybe you should tighten the strap a bit.

The zones are different for biking and running.... they will be higher for running... and it could be that your heart is in really good shape Peggy, so it's harder to make it higher!   If you were riding really hard, enough that it hurt, then I wouldn't worry about it, maybe that's just as high as it will go??
