As I got passed by a superior rider (who I know has completed the Kona IM, and by the way is on the juice) on his cervelo p3, I got to wondering...how much does the bike make a difference is real speed?

Anyone go from a basic tri bike (like my 22 pound aluminum fuji aloha) to an all carbon $5k beast?  how much did your mph improve?

Assuming you are well fit on the Aloha...short answer is no...it will not make you much faster.

Weight is of little consequence in TTs and triathlons.  The weight savings you would get from your Aloha to a P3 is about 3-4 pounds.  And most of that is simply from the basebars, extentions, componentry and the wheelset being lighter (when you pay $5k for a bike...you naturally get better extras).

So if we're just talking frames...then what's the difference.  Carbon is able to be made into more aerodynamic shapes than aluminum.  But making aerodynamic shapes often means you use more material.  Look at a P4 frame compared to a road bike frame.  The P4 frame is relatively huge.  It's very aero...but you aren't saving very much weight just because your using carbon.

That being said...how much does an aero frame make?  The general belief is not that much.  90% of the drag created while riding a bike is created by the frontal surface of the rider.  So the key is really to get a bike that puts the rider in the most aero position.  And a position that rider can sustain for the entire bike portion of his/her race.

Just like any line of bikes...some bikes are created to be "more aggressive" than others.  The Aloha is an entry level bike, and not designed to put the rider in an ultra aggressive and aero position.  So assuming you can handle a very aggressive position, then moving to a more aggressive frame (likely a more expensive carbon one...but not always) may prove to be beneficial.  Again...this assumes you can hold the position for the whole race.  There is no benefit to a more aggressive bike if you have to sit up half the time.

Huh, I did not know that. THIS is the stuff I want to learn more about. Thanks!!! Now what about race wheels... just how on earth do they make you faster? And do they actually make you faster?

Don't get me wrong...high end carbon frames are more aero, and are thus faster than aluminum frames...just not as much as you might think.  Given that some of these bikes can range from $4k-$10k, at a certain point, you ask yourself "is it worth it?".

As far as wheels, yes, they do help...but again...only to a certain extent.  A good pair of race wheels can save you maybe 45-60 seconds over a 40k bike leg.  Maybe 3-5 minutes over a 112 mile leg.

When spending money to get faster...the common theme is aero trumps weight savings when it comes to TTs and tris.

Therefore, your best bang for your buck is always to first get aero bars and an aero helmet.  Adding aero bars adds weight, and an aero helmet is definately heavier than a good road helmet...but they improve the aerodynamics of the rider.  Which again, is where most of the drag is created.  They are also affordable compared to a $5k bike or a $1-2k race wheelset.

After that...the money best spent is to again get yourself in a more aero riding position.  If that requires a new fit, new stem, new base bars, etc...that will pay you more dividends in speed.  Of course...it needs to be a position you can comfortably hold.

Once those resources are exhausted...then you can look at race wheels, then a more aero frame, lastly starting to shave weight by upgrading components, etc.

But if you got the money...there is nothing wrong with buying a sexy new bike or a hot set of race wheels.  Looking good is important too...  But if you're strictly looking at cost/ time benefit...it's likely the last thing you'll do.

Amazing, amazing, amazing! I love learning this kind of stuff. I've got myself in a good, comfortable position and, in the iron-distance I just did, I spent about 75-80% of my time in aero, pretty good for a course where the first 60-70k are rollers. I can probably get myself into a more aggressive aero position (first by returning to my bullhorn handlebars and get the gears back on the aerobars). I'll think of that when the new season rolls around. Right now it's off-season and I'm looking forward to getting rid of the aerobars and being a true cyclist for a bit!!
I think I'm going to hold off on race wheels, too expensive. I'll consider aero helmet when I've got the cycling chops to match it. Right now, the best way of getting faster is training smarter!!!

I feel like I have been away from the group for a long time but it has only been a day or so.  After Sunday's work it has been kind of busy for me and I have been worn out.  I am starting to get my training back in but it is going to be kind of weird not being able to get my whole plan done this week.  I know I would have been able to get it all in had it not been for the work on Sunday but I get real irritated when something like that happens right after I start something (like the HIM plan) last week.

6 miles running tonight has me feeling pretty good right now.  Had it not been for some icy spots on the roads I would have been a little faster.  I was feeling really good tonight.

Is your new prof pic from your race?

How about some race pics from you and Melbel... did you guys get any?

Yep, I got some. I've been trying to add them to the race report but it is being a finicky b!tch
Here's my finish line photo, though:

Love it finishing with a smile.

Got a long, slow trainer ride in tonight. About 1hr 30min. Should be an interesting weekend coming up as my lady gets back in town. We'll see if what I've been working on this winter break sticks around. I'm thinking it will as she is starting to get back into working out (she was a runner in HS and hasn't done much at college). We're looking to do a 5k in February together. It's a pretty cool race idea, the ladies start 2 mins before the boys and we try to catch the girls!

I haven't been feeling the greatest the past day and a half.  Had a lot of gas/bloating issues which I haven't really experienced before.  It seems fine now, but we'll see when I eat again.

Hoping I'll feel good enough to get in my run this afternoon.  I already skipped my trainer session this morning...but not a big deal.

So who's racing next?

I have a 8.15 mile running race coming up in about a month (president's day)...but someone else has got to be doing something before then.

I'm thinking of doing a half-ironman 2 weeks after the iron-distance I just did (Jan 29), but it depends on how I'm feeling. Right now I am feeling AMAZING, but haven't attempted running yet. As long as I am not training per se, but racing for fun, then there should be no problems. Other than that, I know I am doing a 15k trail run Feb 19, and a short-course off-road triathlon Feb 20. Gonna be gooooood!!!!

I'm technically in my off-season now, after the Challenge... despite it being summer. I'll be in off-season mode until end of Feb/beg of Mar. I've yet to have a full season of training, instead I like doing half or 3/4 seasons, and then having a shorter off-season as well. Otherwise, I would lose focus and burn out. It's the equivalent of training from Northern Hemisphere springtime until middle of July, then about 3-5 weeks "off". In the off-season, I generally just do whatever I want, stay active, and maybe some races for fun but no structured training.

did short swim and bike today about 8 hours in between, felt fine in fact feel no real soreness and felt good to go before I got home from gym after bike, I'm assuming I should push it harder did about 1300 yards in pool, and around 19 miles in just under an hour on exercise bike, any thoughts?

Charleston's first annual marathon was last week, I didn't hear about it until the Dept. asked for people to work the run might try for it next year but my first race is a st Patt's 5k in March...

My swim and run are strong, and only getting stronger. My bike needs work, and that's what my coach and I are going to really focus on once I get back to structured training. Getting more power and strength. If I can get that up to speed, then yes I think I can start placing. I would have been 4th or 5th in my AG in Challenge Wanaka were it not for the bike. I went from 5th on the swim, 10th on the bike and 4th on the run... only ending up 9th over the entire course. Clearly, bike will be the focus. I CAN GET THERE!!

Had a great strength training workout today after work.  My wife and I might run a 5K on February 6th.  It depends on 2 things, the weather and if the Chicago Bears are in the Superbowl.
So we will see.  I think that I can squezze it in even,WHEN, the Bears are in the Superbowl. Ha-Ha.

Ran 3 miles tonight and then jumped in the pool thinking I would try to get in 2000 meters (my current longest non-stop swim)... ended up going 2500 meters!  I felt good and could have probably made it to 2 miles, but didnt want to push it and be wasted for tomorrows workout.

I'm not really following the specific workouts of my plan anymore... but I'm getting in the hours, so hopefully it'll turn out okay.
