Hey Peter
Thats the true face of IM (that you never get to see) and that is one of my motivations too! Hope you all are getting some work in. Shanks is bringing it this week. Wish me luck. I will be pulling for all of you!

Way to hang in there with your run and you are spot on when you wrote "Don't be intimidated by the bling of a nice bike. You get just as much respect with a fast split on a clunker as a carbon beast. Just keep pedaling."

again, its not about the bike, its about the guts!

LOL!
crazy photos all-around...
yup-- i'm sticking with my 10yr plan to complete IM
looks like i'll need LOTS of time to work my way up to being even partially prepared for that!

good workouts for me: 18k run & 2hrs in the pool (mostly drills & strategy work)

i'm WIPED

& i'm glad to be in good company too!
(but i'll admit... i upgraded my bike)
i knew i'd need to get rid of the mountain bike in order to really give longer distances a fair go!
here's hoping that (& the training) pays off this year...!

might sign up for some events next week
(& yes-- i'll be ballsy this time around) Tongue out
4 events isn't too much from June-Sept... right?
(i only have 1 "A" race this year....)
1 try a tri (to warm up)
2 sprints (for the sake of practice & improvement)
& the Oly "A" race

I sometimes look at the People of Walmart website for motivation.  Never want to be like that!  Feeling fit is such a great feeling.  I'll admit to some pretty serious head demons, too.  Mine usually come around at the beginning of the swim, which is why I'm working so hard on my swimming this season so I can banish those little f-ers before my IM in June.

Regarding the clunker bike: I think you get even MORE respect for fast splits and beating fancy bikes on a clunker!

Spent the past two days moping on my couch, trying not to let a cold take hold.  I think I've managed to beat it and I squeezed in an 8 mile run late this afternoon when the sun finally made an appearance.  Another huge motivator?  Wearing out my two terriers.  Bliss.  This week is going to be pretty great--I'm heading to San Diego on Wednesday and I'm looking forward to some nice training weather.

Have a great week!

my legs are a bit sore from the run & swim yesterday, so i'm passing on spin class for today & will just swim with my master's group tonight!

as much as i loved the drills & open water swim strategies, it'll be nice to get back into the regular swing of things for a workout with high mileage & intensity

& regarding race entries...
once you've mapped our your season plan.... is there such thing as registering too soon??

glad to see some solid work done this weekend! Thanks for posting that Hottie Peter. Now I am really horny haha...

I think the danger in registering early is if you get injured or change your mind and you cant get your $ back. Some races sell out early so you have to register early. Others dont so I take my sweet old time. Check with your state or country message boarders if you want some insight about a particular race selling out early.

Looking back, how'd your January go?

Here is what I just posted on the IMCDA board:
here are my January numbers compared to last year's numbers. Kind of disappointing to finish less when i have a June IM compared to a Nov IM last year. However, we killed some volume this month tapering and doing pre-season testing when last year that was done in February so that probably would have equaled things out. My results were solid compared to last year's pre-season tests so I can't really complain. Hope you all are getting ramped up for the big builds!!

2011 January's totals:
Bike:30h 45m 58s  - 601.93 Mi
Run:15h 46m 10s  - 120.25 Mi
Swim:8h 34m 45s  - 26100 Yd
Strength:5h 45m
2010 January's totals:
Bike:31h 28m 28s  - 610.09 Mi
Run:15h 41m 13s  - 128.15 Mi
Swim:14h 08m 16s  - 40800 Yd
Strength:6h 25m

well, they're pretty good about issuing refunds for medical reasons.
for the 1 series in particular, i believe that with more than a month's warning, it's a full refund if your doctor issues you a note saying you can't complete the event & then from there it's a 75% refund if you give 4 weeks.... 50% if it's 3 weeks, 25% for 2 weeks notice & then no refund if it's less than 2 weeks warning
(which seems reasonable to me)

as for looking back on January... i'll have to do some digging!
i'm terrible about logging actual time/hrs and mileage...
so i've started out with a goal that looks at the # of workouts i complete per week.
figure i'll use this as a starting off point and continue from there.
(tricky... b/c right now i'm training for my long distance running events coming up in March & May.)
from there, i'll likely scale back the running mileage & ramp up the biking a lot more
(the snow had BETTER be gone by May!)

not looking forward to the snow storm we're in for mid-week....

The sad thing is I feel weak looking at those numbers too Peter. Feed me more Seymour!

Yes Nicruns it always boils down to keeping myself loose until I must commit. I don't pay fees until I have to. Hope your snow storm isn't too bad!

January re-cap:
8- swim
7- bike
11- run

(those are my total workouts)
- typically, the workouts were kept to 1 hour (with the odd 2hr run, 3hr spin class, or 2 hr swim.... but at the end of the day, still counts as just 1 workout to me)

that's where i'm starting off.... goal for Feb: improve & build upon those numbers!
it's a short month... so i'll be happy to keep those totals the same for Feb (or increase by just one!)

that fair!
oddly.... i find that $$ commitment to be motivating...
gives me something really concrete to work towards
(which in my case is easier-- since my distances are relatively very short!) Tongue out

i figure in this case i'll actually wait until the next email comes around, advertising the fact that registration is indeed open again... in case they offer up a promo or discount code for EARLY- early registrations...
(they did that for a run i jumped the gun on signing up for.)
dah well! lesson learned!

i'm going to look into getting myself info a computrainer time trial in Feb.
i'd love to know what i'm capable of (at this point) on my road bike

yes-- i'm completely untested.
(& shamelessly counting down to Spring)

Please tell me that 8 weeks is still far off. It is making me anxious as to my preparation. At least work is a workout.

8 weeks is a long time off but now is the time to really put the work in so you have something to taper from. Waiting till the date gets closer, and than upping the mileage, is opposite of what you really want.

even though a case of the mid-day LAZIES was bringing me down a bit this afternoon, i'm ready for my pm workout (master's swimming!)

PLUS!
i'm getting set to mail in my registrations for 2011 (yes MAILING... all to save me: $16 + change) Money mouth

i'm a sucker for registering early.
might as well go with that source of motivation!

Thanks. I am not too worried about SB mileage, it's the run and every workout from 2mi to 5mi to building it is a confidence boost. I'm gonna stop building 3 weeks out.

Had a great workout week until I blew out my back.  Still able to get in the pool tonight then some riding on a stationary which i could only handle for 35 minutes.  I was in a bad accident Feb 2010 and messed my lower back up pretty good.  Things starting getting much better when I started doing triathlon training this past October.  So now with this I hope it will not last too long.  I have a race Feb. 20th so I'm hoping and praying that I will be good to go!

Damn about that back problem grey75t!  I have a bad low back from a bike wreck in 09 and its pretty frustrating. My PT was pretty helpful with getting back to work quickly after the inflammation went down. LisaB even overcame back surgery. How bad is yours?

Hows y'all February's starting? Lets see some slaying taking place if possible. Banish those "lazies"....

yikes....
unpleasant weather...
(that-- in my mind-- is the theme of the week for me)

got my swim in last night, which was FANTASTIC
(more intervals, which i HATE... but i'm slowly learning to appreciate)

& i may get confirmation today about the possible 20k time trial later this month!
(EXCITED!)
it'll likely be depressing...
but it'll give me something concrete/tangible to work with.

and i wrote my cheques  & am ready to sign up for my 2011 tri events...
but i can't help but be slightly bummed at the amount of driving it'll take to get to & from these events!
STINKS that there are so few in my hometown
(i did the one in downtown Toronto last year-- but wasn't a fan of the 3 X around the loop bike course)
THAT was depressing!

My back has a 9mm extrusion (L5/S1).  I've been hoping that over the years to come it will heal on it's own and manage the pain throug htimes like this.  The other option is surgery which I do not want.  I'm kind of scared of that to be honest.  Not of the surgery itself but the after effects and flexibility after having it fused.
