Talk to KC - he went through the same thing.  I would say try changing your breathing to every other stroke once you start to get short of breath.  It is very difficult to hold that every 3rd stroke.  When I first started swimming I had a co-worker tell me the same thing and now I use the 2 stroke breathing BUT I still work on my 3 stroke breathing so I can comfortably switch sides in a race if needed (waves, sun, etc...)  I also would alternate every 50Y with breathing on right adn then do 50Y breathing on left just so that I was comfortable with both sides.  I think everyone has their own opinion and all the coaches and books say use the 3 stroke breathing - but everyone is different and it just didn't work for me.

Once you can stop worrying about breathing you will relax automatically.

gkao - 2011-04-27 1:16 PM

.  I'm getting the hang of pacing, breathing, and not thinking about running while running.  But I can't seem to do the same for swimming.  I find myself often out of breath every 50-100 meters.  I'm breathing every 3 strokes.  I'm kicking sparringly (as recommending by coach here, which worked really well for me after some experimentation).  I tend to really be focusing on my form, thinking at EVERY moment about what EVERY part of my body should be doing - arms, legs, head, hip, hands, feet, etc.  I'm trying to relax while thinking.  However, unlike running where I can still breath if I'm thinking about my form, I can't breath if I'm focused on my form while swimming.  As a result, my heart starts to race, and I need to stop and breath.

Any tips on how to get to that "zone" when you're just pacing and can swim without stopping every 50-100 meters?

Tim are you cheating???? that was my advice last session to KC lol.... Great minds think alike... How are you feeling?

Naked Kevin, how are you doing adjusting to not being on vacation?

My sleep pattern is still way off....I have 1 training day in on Monday (last night I was at the philly flyers game 7)  My run on Monday was a good one...just a nice pace.  I would like to do a 40-50 minute run tonight.  I need to work out my training plan as i am ~ 2 1/2 weeks from my first race. Embarassed

My only advice is don't try to make up all your missed workouts.  Just work into it slow or you will injure yourself.   I'll give you a pass for going to the philly game... lol

Cool, coach.  That's what I was thinking.

Tim, hilarious video.  Two thumbs up.

I have a question for the group about swimming.

Any tips on how to get to that "zone" when you're just pacing and can swim without stopping every 50-100 meters?

when i started swimming i was determined to breath every three strokes and i did for about 2 weeks and i was always struggling.  then my friend said to try every two strokes and i was amazed at how nice it was to get air a little more often.  try changing your breeathing pattern and see if it helps.

Real funny!! LOL  I can't wait to race you for some full contact swimming for that comment!! :-)

OK - but we are playing golf after so I have a chance to get you back on the course - only we are playing non-contact golf!

I'm in, for every second I beat you on the race course I get 1 stroke!!!LOL  Heck 60 seconds I get 60 strokes, How much we playing for?? LOL

OK Wise Guy - I will give you a shot for every minute on the swim - that is my best offer!

OK, its an Ironman swim though!!!! 2.4 miles LOL  :-)  I figure I can go about 1:05 right now and I need about 30-40  strokes.   You time yourself for approx 4300yards and let me know how many stroke I get>>>  Now whos the wise guy!! LOL

Having a terrible day at work.  Every patient has been a struggle today.  Would appreciate some happy vibes/simple prayers/etc.

35 min trainer ride tonight.  Again, so happy to be on a recovery week!

That is what is so great about working out you get to forget everything at work (unless on call).  Hang in there!!!

Do you know a Carmela Osborne she is a great friend that just moved to Jackson and is at one of the hospitals, she is a pain and something MD?  I used to see her monthly with all my aches and pains in this sport.

That is so awesome to see them out on the course, even more cool when they blow past you!!! All you can do is smile at how much courage they have!  One day I want to do the 70.3 where you are the eyes for someone blind, once I get alittle faster I would love to do it.  I don't want to slow them down though.

Mary - hope your day got better.. I'll send you some retroactive happy thoughts.  Hope tomorrow is better! Smile

That video blew my mind.  I should probably just bookmark it so I can watch it again and again..

Some very exciting news at my end - I found out that I got into the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco through the random drawing. Surprised I entered it on a whim (yes, like my summer tri; if I think about these things too much, I tend to talk myself out of them) thinking that if I got in, that would be great, and if not, there would always be another year.  Now I'm excited for October - it will be my first full, so I'm a little nervous, too (but definitely more excited)!  I'm getting the hang of mixing the long-distance running training with the short tri training, and figure I should be able to maintain it until my tri at the end of July. After that I'll figure out how much biking and swimming I can fit in to the training schedule.

Hey Team - I hope all is well.

Mary - I hope your day got better and good for you finding some time to get a ride on the trainer in. It is always tough to get motivated when things are not going that great.

George - Listen to Tim and Coach - they know what they are talking about when it comes to these 3 sports.

Coach - Hold on a second, no one said anything about IM distance - there has to be something we can figure out LOL

OK - cool news I want to share with the group from today - I did my longest run this afternoon 10 KM Smile. I started out knowing my route and I just told myself not to worry about the wind or the rain but to just enjoy it, settle into a nice pace and did it. I went out in 30:55 for the first 5 km and back in 29:13. I wanted to bring it in at under an hour - just missed by 9 seconds but I will get it next time LOL.

I was worried I may have spent myself for the swim tonight but I got to the pool and enjoyed a nice 1000 meters (various 100's and 50's) and again I took a big step I think. The pool was busy and 2 months ago I would probably have just left but I got there early, picked a lane and settled in. 2 younger guys jumped in my lane and were all over the place so I decided to instruct them on proper lane manners, after running over one of them (on purpose) LOL. I think that Cliff Bar video motivated me. Sorry Coach, but I was not carrying my gun in my speedos (wow that sounds funny Smile) so I decided to do a little full contact swimming to prove a point. After that and a little conversation at the end of the pool  I got them swimming in a circle and paying attention - it was great.

That is it for me Team - just wanted to share a good day. Tomorrow, work in the morning and a visit to my family doctor to discuss results and next steps from the results of all the tests from my heart doctor. I can tell you this though - the heart worked pretty good today Smile.

Have a great night everyone.

KC

Exactly--I knew going into the trip that training would be tough to fit in....so it was a planned recovery week--all the walking around, u and down was good

So far I have done 2 runs Monday 30 minute and Wednesday 50 minutes both felt good.  Tonight is a long ride ~ 90 minutes.

I have my base down so I know not to hammer it for the first 5 days this week--Saturday is a planned brick and next week is a mixture of intervals and long distance.

Looks like everyone it pushing through their workouts and not letting too much interfere with them Laughing

My swimming started out breathing every 2 stokes and I am now doing bilateral breathing.  I agree with what has previously been written and I also tend to breathe when I need too! I am really looking forward to my first tri to see how my swimming is.

Have a great day Cool

Day got better once I left the hospital.  But I didn't get on the trainer...drinks with friends instead.  On call tonight, but maybe will squeeze it in before the pager starts blowing up.

No, I don't know any Dr. Osborne's--maybe not at the same hospital?

I have been training the bike and run before work for the last two weeks.  Since it means getting out of the house earlier does anyone have any suggestions for a quick breakfast?  I need to get a little boost to get me going.

I got up this morning with Tim and coach stuck in my head for my planned run (25 minutes).  Just don't stop and NDWQ.  But the storms were passing through the area so it will have to wait until this afternoon.  I hope anyone else in the path made it OK.

question- i am looking at tri shorts for my race.  some shorts have very, very thin pad (almost like an extra layer of fabric) while others have a thicker pad.  i have heard in HIM and IM races it is important to be comfortable and take time to change clothes if needed.  my question is... get the thin pad shorts and just run in them or get thicker and change.  i am sure this is a personal preference but i worry that the thin pad might be uncomfortable on the bike.  any suggestions?

thanks in advance.

Hey everyone.  Finally got into our new place here in Overland Park (suburb of KC).  Been unpacking and sorting the last two days.  Finally got internet again.  No way am I going to try to catch up on all the posts, lol.  Hoping to start figuring out where I can swim/ride/run around here pretty soon so I can start working out again, although I've had some pretty good workouts the last couple days.

Hope everyone's training has been going well.

I have a pair of Zoot tri shorts.  I like them.  They have a thin pad, I think I paid about 50$, but they were 2010 leftovers.  My local tri shop carries TYR.  Those were a little nicer, and what I'm getting next year. 75$.

This is all personal preferance and tolerance.  Some people can't eat right before working out with having issues.  If you have a strong stomach i would suggest a sports drink, toast or bagel, fruit juice or banana.  I usually grab a handful of raisins with a glass of fruit juice then drink a sports drink on the way to gym.  I will then eat a decent breakfast immediatley after working out to re-fuel.

The book I am reading on nutrition actually covers this pretty extensively.  They suggest an ideal time to eat is 3-4 hours before working out.  The rule of thumb they suggest is that the closer your meal is to working out the smaller your meal should be.  They suggest liquid items like protien shake, sports drink, fruit smoothie to speed up digestion. Should try to target anywhere from 50-100g of carbs.  Anything eaten under 1 hour and there is a theory that it raises your blood glucose and blood insulin.  When you start training your blood glucose actually drops and your liver decreases the amount of glucose in your blood stream thus - affecting your performance.  But I think this is all dependant on what type of workout you are doing and how long.  If you are doing a 20 minute jog probably nothing to worry about but if you are doing a hard interval workout or brick workout you probably want to pay more attention to what and when you are eating.

Best advice - just try different stuff out and see how your body reacts and how you feel.  Track it in your log.

Forecast for Saturday in Champaign/Urbana is calling for high of 77 with locally damaging winds of 25 MPH with 52 MPH gusts.

Awesome.  Hopefully it is at my back most of the time and maybe I can fly a little bit to rest the legs.

I have been eatting some peanut butter on a banana about 30-45 minutes before my 5:30 run or 6:00 swims.  I find the protien helps sustain the energy longer than banana by itself.  You will have to try various items to see how your stomach / energy levels react.

I think we (Indy area) are clear of rain for a while now.  It was wierd running this afternoon with that big yellow orb staring at me.  I have not seen it in about 3 weeks.

Hi all.

Good 7.5 mile run last night in high winds at a 9:26 pace which is good for me.  It was a practice for the real thing a week from Saturday.  No structure recovery week this week which means I'm in the basement on the bike for 90 mins tonight at low power watching tv.  Rain coming in again.  Friday is rest day and date night.

Nutrition - gotta have it.  I'm finding the less I eat and the more I drink calories before exertion the better offf I am.  I ahve Honey Stinger waffles coming though so I'm going to try those.  I LOVE waffles.  I got a box of their energy bars too. Honey/peanut butter. Two of my favs.  Will see how that works.  I've been having cramps at the start of runs if I eat banas before I go.

Cycling shorts vs. tri shorts.  I wore tri shorts for my half IM and never had an issue.  Watching what others do at IMs, I may be wearing cycling shorts.  Dunno yet.  I am going to buy some TYR carbon fiber stuff, a top and shorts, because they claim they wick so well they drop temperature up to 4 degrees and heart rate.  If so, worth the money for this sweaty boy.

Hope all is well.

Ice.
