Wow - I think I've over trained.  I really pushed it this weekend.  My hips hurt for the first time in months and I'm exhausted... I was supposed to bike today but decided that a rest day was called for.    I will go for a swim tomorrow and try to get back on track.

Sorry you're feeling fatigued, but nice job listening to your body and taking some extra rest.  Sometimes that's the hardest thing to do when you've got a schedule to keep.  Hope the extra rest helped!

Damn - I pushed myself to hard and now my back hurts and the bursitis in my hips is back.  I thought I had said adieu to that old friend about a month ago.  I've spent time time getting my back and hips worked on by my school trainer and have only swam the last three days.  I plan on heading out for a 30 minute bike ride just so I don't go nuts.

Lesson learned - its better to only get 3/4 of a workout in than to push it only to miss 3x the amount of time...

Awww that sucks!! take it easy and hopefully you will recover fast!

I hope everyone is doing well!

I had a 5k this past weekend. I wouldn't say I performed too well, but it was definitely a great workout. The name of it was "End of the Mountain 5K" ...I was kind of hoping that meant "in the valley". No, it meant the SIDE of the mountain. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful setting, with some friendly people, so I'll call it a success.

Congrats! A success is awesome! I did some biking and running in the mountains this weekend too and there is something to be said about it and how much better it makes racing & training! So neat to hear the birds & see wild life and not the hustle and bustle of the city!

kevinbe - 2012-05-23 5:52 PM Just got my wetsuit in the mail today, and am about to go try it on.  I'm going to train exclusively outdoors now, and am excited.  I've never been in a lake to excercise, and need to practice.  I figure I can get comfortable working on transitions as well that way.

Woohoo new wetsuit! What kind did you go with?

Hey Flipper - glad to hear that you'll be diving into the lake!  That's something I will have to wait until July to do - but I am looking forward to it.  The pool has gotten crowded.

One advantage of swimming in a lake is that the water can keep your beer cold while you workout!

That's great!  The fact that you got out there and got it done is a victory.  It's been tough at times but you have done an amazing job of sticking to it!  Glad to hear you got to enjoy a beautiful day with friends.

When if your next race?

Good luck with the bursitis! From how I've had it described to me by someone with it, it's nasty! How's it doing now?

Thanks!  It doesn't hurt as much as plantar fascitis but it's not pleasant either.  Actually - its kind of funny because when I get up after sitting at my desk, I look like an old man hobbling around.

It's getting better and I'm trying to resist the urge to jump back in and go... I got a swim in this morning so it won't kill me to miss my run this afternoon...

Hi guys!

I just got caught up in the thread and read some of your race reports!  Nice work, all!

I've been foam rolling my calves like crazy since my plantar fasciitis started flaring up last week.  Ugh.  I've been able to run, albeit slowly.  I've actually been afraid of getting on my bike since last year biking aggravating it a lot.... Trying not to make the same mistakes as last year, so my foam roller has become my best friend this past week!

Also, lesson learned.  When breaking in newer shoes, make sure to only use them for the run, and not walking around afterward!  I'm hoping this is just a hiccup, though!  Last year, I was able to return to running after cutting back my bike mileage and massaging the crap out of my legs.  If this PF doesn't go away again soon, I'll call up my massage therapist and see if he can fix me up!

Plantar Fasciitis is a curse brought upon us by Satan who must hate athletes with a passion.  I have suffered with it as well and it blows.  I use the foam roller but I've really started to get a handle on it by rolling my foot on a golf ball while I watch tv in the evening.  I would then ice it for the next 20 minutes and made sure to take advil to relieve the inflamation.  It took about 10 days and it hasn't flared up since - I think in part because I still make time to stretch every day.  Your idea about the shoes is a good one.  Best of luck - it will get better!

Xterra Vortex.  It seemed like a good deal with the sale based on what's online and on craigslist.  We'll see how it works in the water.

Moonrocket - 2012-05-23 10:02 PM I was planning on my first OWS in the morning with a local master's group - and my first time with my wetsuit.  It's supposed to be 43f and raining though.  I think I'll hit the pool master's instead!

Yikes, 43 is definitely chilly!  I didn't get in until it was 52, and I still thought it was too cold!  I was actually thinking of doing another lake swim tomorrow evening, since it's supposed to be a balmy 62 in the water!  But then I scheduled a massage instead.  Maybe I'll do a morning lake swim!

This is a good point.  I'm considering going out to a lake that I grew up water skiing on.  I can remember several times as a youth getting in during the beginning of June, so that's what I may go with.  I have no way of guaging temp, but wondering if I need something on feet, hands, or head.  What are BT's thoughts?

Kicked A$$ at 17.88 mph today.  I'm a 14-15 mph guy previously, so the improvement is motivating me into next 2 weeks of bike focus.  I did find a nail in tire, so tiny, but it may have been responsible for more than 1 of the flats.  Been out 2x now without flat.

1000 yd TT in pool tomorrow followed by 75 minutes on the spin bike.  Hoping for the last spin bike workout of the year.

Eagle Lake resort, it's just east of Calgary. Shallow lake that doesn't allow motorized boats which is good!

Awesome!  That's a huge improvement.  I would imagine that getting off the spin bike and being able to ride outside will help you continue to get faster.  Glass to also hear that you figured out what was happening wit your time.  Man, there are few things worse that getting a flat (except for getting a flat 2x in a week).

Good luck with your time trail!  Get in there and get it done!

I only had a latex swim cap.  If I had been planning ahead, I might have brought 2 silicone caps, since that would keep me warmer.  And I have to remember to tuck my ears in my cap if the water is cold.  One of my friends wore one of those neoprene bonnets for his head, but everyone else just had regular swim cap(s).

Regarding Kevin's questions about hands and feet.... I generally don't do anything for those since I don't get in until it's above 50.  I know some folks swim in Lake Michigan year-round, so they have neoprene gloves, booties, and bonnets for during the winter.  I feel like most smaller bodies of water will be warm enough by June that you don't need anything besides regular swim caps.

Also, I know some of you guys are in Canada- not sure if any of you regularly swim in one of the Great Lakes, but just wanted to share with you the website I check when I want to know what the water temps are going to be.... It's the Great Lakes Coastal Forecasting System, and you can look up surface temperature forecasts as well as currents, wind, waves, etc.

http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/glcfs/

I always look up the "nowcast" as well as forecasts for the upcoming week when I'm planning my open water swims.  That way, I can show up for my swim prepared!

I think I have it under control, but I have a big training weekend coming up (planning on running 13-15 miles tomorrow and biking ~45 on Sunday) so I'm headed to my massage therapist after work to knead the heck out of my legs.

My training in the upcoming few weeks will largely determine whether I pull the trigger and register for Steelhead 70.3.  If my plantar fasciitis continues to give me problems, I'll just focus on my 5k swim and the Chicago Marathon this year, and just do shorter tris this summer.

I think I will invest in a cap.  What kind to buy, and where?  really a novice at all this stuff, so I'm living on BT's advice.  So far I know I'm not swimming in a spedo, and I need batteries to help keep me warm.  Check!Wink

I just did my 1000TT in 21:54.  I think this is a little slower than last time, 2:11/100.  I did little swimming in weeks leading up to marathon, so time to get all over the swim and bike in next 2 weeks.

Had a good bike workout today.  Did a 5 mile warm up to a hill by my house.  Then I rode up the 1 mile long hill 5x each time in a higher gear with the goal of getting to the top faster.  The last one just about killed me but it's done!  I gained almost 700 feet of elevation and maintained a 13 mph speed average.  With a massive century with 4000 feet of elevation gain, workouts like these need to become a regular part of my week.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Nice job on the hill repeats.  Keep that up every week and that century will be a breeze!
