I'm doing a walk/run program with her to get her going. We walked 2 min and ran 7 min and averaged 10:40 for 3 miles. That was the fastest we've gone so far. I'm getting used to these walk breaks! After our 10K next month I really need to get back to regular running but it's been fun to ease back into running. Here's the lastest puppy video in case anyone needs a fix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrdRu7cWy8s
Love your puppy fix! thanks!
If it's any inspiration to you there's a day next week I'm going to have to be up at 3am to get my bike ride in. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ken--I'm totally jealous of your trip!! I hope you have a blast. I'm just starting to research places to go for the kids' spring break in April. My requirements---warm & green! ![]() Thanks for all your input on the Swim Speed Secrets. I figure I can always use more help with my speed. After taking private lessons, she said that my form was good, but I'm still slow. Thinking I can always improve, & maybe take some lessons from someone else to get a different perspective. Kathleen-congrats on pulling the trigger on Kansas! It's a great race, you'll have fun. Totally understand about the camping thing, especially if it's not something you normally do. No need to add another wrinkle. The link to the race calendar is https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/lv?key=0AhbWu4ps3_dodDl4ZXdZNnFv... Becky-I feel your pain, I have stress dreams too!! Luckily none about IMWI yet, but I waited tables in college, so I have dreams about not being about to get to everyone too, usually it also includes about 4 tables that come in 5 min before closing time. DJ--I'd be interested in hearing what seats did & didn't work for you. I HAVE TO get a new seat this year. Too many decisions last year (I HATE making decisions & tend to over research), forced me to stick with the stock saddle on my new bike, that was known for being uncomfortable. It's on my list of things to buy, right after I decide on a trainer. January goals are going well, & I'm enjoying getting back into the swing of things & the diversity after a run heavy end to last year. |

And don't talk yourself out of the 10 miler--even if you're last, you're still beating everyone still in bed or on the couch, so keep up the positive self talk, never negative! Find the mantra that will work for you in a race that you can repeat to yourself when needed. When I am feeling like I just want to stop running and curl up on the side of the road and let everyone else pass, I start singing "Just keep running, just keep running" to the tune of Dori singing "Just keep swimming" from Nemo. I also think about previous runs or races that were difficult, but that I made it through, so that lets me know that I KNOW I can do it. I just have to keep running! Let us know how it goes.Hello All, I might do the 5 miler instead but I haven't decided yet. It takes me a LONG time to do 10 miles and of course I have the whole "I don't want to be the last person" thing going on in my head (most or all of you probably haven't had to think that All for now.
Very good advice Becky! |

I put if off far too long. LOL!! I also pounded the pillows to give it life again, my arms got a workout. ![]() I forgot you went to RIT DJ! So you know all about winter weather then. They just broke ground on their new hockey arena! Speaking of hockey, the water feature in front of that one hotel/casino where they do the water show would make a heck of a hockey rink if that froze over! |

My requirements---warm & green! ![]() Although we still attend some meetings, my avatar picture is from last years meeting so we play a little too! Looking forward to getting some open water swims in as well. Plus, my wife gave me a GoPro 2 camera for Christmas. I am hoping there are some places I can do some under water filming. When you had the lessons and they indicated your form was good, did they give you any feed back on cadence or body position? I also find (like yesterday) that if I don't do some drills once or twice a week, that my body position and form deteriorates quickly even if I am swimming regularly. |

It is good though that your able to do the training with your daughter. When I first started running, I did a run/walk. It worked for me because I was carrying extra weight and I needed the breaks. I realized, for me, after a while I started using it as an excuse rather than a need. Last year I pushed myself and cut out most of the walking except on the longer runs. It was mentally good for me to realize I could run the whole way even if it was slow. It's taken me a while to learn how to push myself beyond my comfort zones. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey guys!!! I was planning to check in but signal on my phone sucked and I have little patience!! I am back from Goofy and in bed!!! It was an awesome experience but it was tough!!! I actually think if I trained better on long distance I would have been fine. I normally do run/walk, which I am planning to get out of because I too think its more of a comfort zone than a need. But for the half I did 2/2 and felt really good because the goal was to take it easy. For the marathon I kept the same goal of 2/2 and was on the same pace as the half for the first 13. I actually think I should have gone slower because after 13 I just sank. I was tired and in pain and made friends at the medical tents thanks to chafing, blisters and needing tylenol. But I finished and besides the early mornings Disney puts on a great race that is well supported. It was a relief to see so many water stops and medical tents! The medals are awesome!! Now Im resting a sore back and feet but otherwise I feel great! I have another marathon in March and a half in about a month. My focus in to continue with my swimming and get another lesson, get on the bike finally even its starting with spin classes and work on my cross training to build up speed. Of course getting my long runs in too. How is everyone's week going? |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I did the test this afternoon on the bike. It is the blood lactate type test, which is physically and mentally easier than the 2 X 20 efforts. I think I may be a bit disappointed in the results when I get them, but they will be accurate as this testing protocol takes the environment out of the equation.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was finishing my swim workout today when the extremely fast swimmer guy a lane over said "I can tell you a way to drop some time if you want" - well who wouldn't! Got to talking with him and he was a former coach for the University's club swim. He told me to work on my head position - I tend to look more forward then down which causes my hips to sink. I already kind of knew that, but will be me conscientious going forward. Also makes me think I need to find a masters swim around here. I haven't had my stroke critiqued by a coach since H.S. so I was excited to have him talk to me! The learning never ends with this sport it seems! |

I just got back from Disney too after completing the marathon. Being this was my first I don't have a lot of reference to pull from, but I will say it was enduring! If you all recall, I had the flu in December which prevented me from staying true to my training schedule for the last few weeks, but with determination, dedication, and a positive attitude I can say I'm a marathoner, too! I was shooting for a 4:30, but had to pull back. My last bit of good training was in about 35 degree average temp, the marathon started about 61 and I finished at about 72 - just a tad warmer then i was used to. Great excuse, but ill take it! 4:55:26. The last few miles were a conscious effort and a whole lotta mantras. Like Michelle, I did a run/walk, mine was a modified Jeff Galloway with a mile run and 1/10 mile walk. That seemed to work fine up to about 21... I guess that was a wall... So a bit of change to my strategy, and voila! My biggest regret was I didn't really enjoy (or should say, remember) my final mile through EPCOT. I'm definitely impressed with the sheer number of racers, about 60,000 over the weekend, and a very impressive support, too. I have my sights set on the Goofy Challenge, maybe next year! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So with my first race of the year under my belt, now it's time to start thinking about other goals. I'm planning on a few recovery runs and some spinning, with some yoga for the rest of the month. I'm planning my A race and am thinking about the Toughman HIM (September) here in Westchester County, just got to see if dates work out properly. So here's a question to thow out to everyone, on the subject of running, I believe i have a pretty good base built up and want to keep it that way into my HIM training. Although I did my marathon as a run/walk of a mile to 1/10th, I built up my steady runs to 11 miles without any walk breaks. I do plan on doing some half marathons and 10k races over the late winter and early spring. Providing i keep up my run base, would it be wise to modify the run sessions of the HIM training to reflect my current base, or tackle it from the beginning, regardless of where im at? Now, I just got to catch up on all these posts! Edited by Jambago 2013-01-15 10:31 PM |

But give the running a break for a couple of weeks, you won't lose much if any fitness. After that, you can modify the plan some, but keep the pace relatively easy for most running while you are building the bike fitness. Maybe a hill workout or some striders, but otherwise easy pace. If you train with HR something in the mid to upper Z2 level at the highest. |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Had my second pool session last night and did okay, but man do I have a lot to work on! Apparently my kick is really wide and holding me back. The coach had me use a pull buoy (I think that's what it is?) so I could see what it felt like without a wide kick. I definitely have a lot of work to do on getting my technique better before I start adding the distance. I would hate to keep reinforcing bad form! Also, thanks, Ken, for mentioning your early workouts (specifically indicating that you were up early, as usual, and got your workout in)--it helped to motivate me this morning to get my run in. I could have easily pushed it to this evening because I don't have anything else scheduled, but I so much prefer morning runs. It's getting out the door that's the problem! But I did, and got in a 6 mile run. Although I was not happy with my pace, I enjoyed the end of the run as I was turning back down my street and saw the break of dawn on the horizon--I love that part of a morning run! The almost imperceptible change from dark to dawn...puts me in a good mood every time! Happy training, all! |
