Carl -- ridiculous ride. Good for you sticking it out. I'd have had my bike on Craigslist by mile 40...

Jay -- Well done on the half! Did you just do this as a spur of the moment race or had you been training for it?

Steve - as always, you are rockin' it.

Carol -- tough luck about the ride.

Linda - best of luck in Boston. I'll cheer for you from the side of Boylston St!

I've been on/off all week due to lots of unexpected business travel. Nothing far, but lots of day trips to different cities whcih start waaaay too early (6 AM flights, etc) and leave me toasted by the end of the day. Pulled out 2950 in the pool today, so that was nice. Felt tired, but good.

Thanks Mike. It was a spur of the moment; signed up on Saturday afternoon after a friend said she'd kill me if I didn't do it. Training for it was non-existent...hence the sufferfest that ensued!

Fellow Trainees

Thanks for all the wishes for a recovery. i am currently doing all my workout indoors see how it goes. Im off this weekend but,no bike rides for me this weekend with 40% chance of rain.I might do my long run on the dreadmill and long ride on my borring 5 mile loop this sunny Fri.

@Steve
I need your advice again in 3 weeks theres a HM in town. My training plan calls for a Two hour run. Would it be advisable to do it? My HIM race is 3 weeks after that.?

@Linda
I'll be thinking about you're safe run on Boston Marathon. Goodluck!!!

@Phil
Great race report so close for a sub 2!!! your young bro you could still make it.

@Jared
I know $150.00 is kinda a bit for a fitting.Steve's advice is important. Most of the elite guys i know here in Texas spent $250.00-$300.00 for a pro-fitter and even though i am just an AGer they got me to cough it up. They even advised me to go the one thats not employed by bike store so he wont be biased. The fitter got my pace to +2 mph.Congratulations on the new bike im sure it will serve you well!!!!

@Mike/Jay
I am sure both of you could volunteer this year for IMLP and do great next year!!!

@Jay
Sorry About Boston ,long shot i guess. A HM i guess wood be a good way not to think about it.

@Carol
Bummer about the Texas Granfondo, I have not done it before, but i heard its mixed flat and rolling hills. I would say its the next most popular Bike Ride after the MS150. I am sure you will do fine. I was looking into getting off the night before and may ride with you guys, oh well ill just be doing the ride the day before. Hopefully your friend recovers well!!!.

Happy Training everyone,

Cheers

Carl

Carl,
It would be fine to hit a HM 3 weeks out from your HIM. You will recover from your HM in about 5 to 7 days if you hit it all-out, so no problem for your HIM. You will be starting your taper around then anyway, so just do active recovery from the race. Hopefully you can get a few more run miles in before then. With a long run of 10... inching up to 14 or 15 miles would give you a strong HM and HIM run assuming you don't cook the bike.

Odd question for everyone. Have you ever been nervous about registering for a race? I was getting ready to register for the Pumpkinman today and I got a huge pit in my stomach and stopped. I've never had this feeling for any Mary, HM, or any other triathlon I've done up to now.

Jay, that's an interesting question. Once I decide to register for something, I'm usually pretty excited by the day I press "enter" and don't look back. But I think it takes me more to get to the point of being committed to registering than most. Not so much knots, but analysis paralysis. Can you put your finger on what it is that worries you? Fear of injury or life intervening, not sure about spending the $$'s? All of those things have kept me from even reaching the point of identifying a race to enter lately. LOL, I think we both need to talk to Mike D about how to get over this!

Took FIL in for a nuclear stress test this morning. Talked to a fellow who was there for the same who is a triathlete. He's been off for about a year with heart issues, but once cleared is targeting IMTX. He seems to think he is going to KQ, having never done a full before. Sounds pretty far fetched, but maybe he will. Sometimes I wish I had that kind of confidence, even if it was misplaced.

Haha Jay funny topic! I get a whole slew of emotions when registering. Mostly nervousness and excitement, and it increases the longer the distances are. Typically I open and close the 'register' pages several times a week until I finally commit. But I always come back and register, because I know that commitment will motivate me. However, if you procrastinate too long, the fee might go up, or even worse, it'll get sold out (Ironman branded ones!). For the Rock N Roll one I just did though, I had a coupon that expired that day so I didn't hesitate: I made up my mind and registered within minutes, for $13 off!

Jared - I have a 2011 P2 and I'm 6'1" tall, and ride a 61. So, I guess it's all about fit. I originally had a 58, and the fitter said I needed a bigger bike....

Thanks for the responses Carl, Phil and Carol. I thought I'd get the weirdo reaction...well, as close to a weirdo reaction as Steve's group would give to anyone. I really don't know where this is coming from though.....I knew about the cost and I certainly know about the distance/training it will take. It maybe anxiety about the swim....afterall, its always the swim when it comes to me.

Its nice to know that I'm not alone in this....I just remember registering for the Hero OLY last year and I was anxious about the swim but nothing stopped me from hitting the register button. Perhaps, its the thought of doing a HM after a swim/bike....and I just got my tail kicked by a HM two days ago.

Jay, I will just call it wisdom. You are reminding yourself that.... I need to count how many weeks it will take me to actually get in shape to do the race correctly before I sign up for anything. For HM/sprint/Oly 3 months, HIM/Mary I would allow 4 months or so, for an IM 6 months. I usually prep longer than that but take that as a minimum for a fun day. Lets so I started my based training for IMCDA in November... so 8 ish months out.

I am still anxious about possibly doing IMTX next year.. but it is the 2100 mile drive after the race that has me most concerned.....

Can recall 2 times about the nervous reheat ration - my first tri ever, and my first HiM. Think it was the enormity of the undertaking which gave me pause. But, I clicked register and its been one if the beat decisions ever

I love this question. Of course one gets nervous. Such a big lifestyle focus, that is why we are all here.
I say, SET GOALS, GO AFTER THEM, & HAVE FUN!!

Lovely weather, 46F, not too much wind, hard run workout again today: 4:00 repeats at 6:56, 6:33, 6:46, 6:45, 6:47, 6:40, 6:44.

For most folks this month is a bit flat motivation wise. So how are folks doing with keeping their workout schedule (aside from injuries)?

Some good buys at 2XU outlet currently some items more than 50% off. Tri tops in the $40 range, etc.

Boy last week my run was completely flat after the half mile repeats the day before. This week I felt much better and ran 8.26 miles at a 7:45 pace without breaking out of Z3... except on hills a bit. I will probably pay for it in my swim next, but it was just a really nice day. I hope others had spring days to just go let loose and enjoy. The geese were not as enthused about my selected path through the bird reffuge.

Steve - funny comment about the geese. They can be such a menace! I feel like WO are progressing well. I dialed back on the bike machine a bit and am picking up more on the treadmill. Big week for me with over 2 hrs running and I will get in the pool a couple times this week to help build the base hours some. Nothing big, baby steps, there is a long way to go to a Sept HIM. I figure mid April will start the bigger grind.

Jay, Phil - great job on the races.

Isabella - Hope you are getting warmer weather, that snow looked crazy.

Carol - How's the foot? Too bad about the bike ride. I know it can really through me off when i cannot get in a WO.

Samantha - How is the hand? One of my coworker had to have surgery on his hand, another on his shoulder and the jokes start flying. Good that you can still get some work in.

Linda - Good luck in Boston!

I spend sooo much time researching races before registering, so yeah there are some nerves there. The first Tri was the worst because I had never swim distance, only recreationally when I was younger. With a bunch of work there was no problem. Now trying to stretch to a longer race, I really want to minimize obstacle to completing it (too many hills, too far away, fitness level, etc.). The money investment seems small, but the time and effort investment is huge. So finding the right perspective is huge to remember this is a lifestyle, not just one event.

Joe, glad you are finding the right groove at the right time. Congrats on the 2 hours of running! Foot is feeling much better. Still some stiffness there, but just a shadow of the former pain. Been getting out for jog/walk intervals every other day, and taking it slow. Thanks for asking.

Steve, looks like maybe hitting the speed over the winter has helped you. Glad you had such a great run! Watch out for those geese, I hear they can be belligerent!

Linda, not too much longer and you will be tapering. How are you feeling, runs going, etc.?

Jay, did you register?

My friend has a fracture in her shoulder, so no cycling for her in the near term and maybe the longer term depending on if there is also tendon/soft tissue involvement. Hate that for her as the weather is warming up for nice cycling days. Have had some good real life things happening though, one of which is that I found out I can get the best continuous glucose monitor on the market covered at 100% on my insurance. That will allow me to see what my blood sugar is trending 24 X 7 instead of only when I my finger to test. Not so much tri related, but it will have an impact on workouts as well as long term health. Also got a new saddle for my bike. Tried taking the old one off, but that screw or whatever is seriously stuck. Will have hubby give it a try. If he can't get it to turn, time to crawl back to the bike shop for help.

Happy spring weekend to all!

Steve, as far as motivation goes, I got a lot of events coming up that are keeping me on track. Aside from resting from this past weekend's HM, I had my first soccer game of the season on Wednesday. It likely made me more sore than the HM did! Soccer will keep me busy til the fall season. I also decided to run another HM in May (Alexandria Running Festival0 to attempt another sub-2. This one starts literally right outside my office. I also got a dragonboat competition in May to prep for, and a relaxing century in June. My plate seems pretty full right now and that motivates me.

Joe, thanks! I think of exercise as an investment too, but the ROI is life-changing!

Sad newsin VA, some poor 16YO collapsed immediately after a HM in Virginia Beach. Definitly hits home with triathletes.

It is always scary, shocking etc, when someone who should be healthy is doing something that should be healthy and dies. Life is kind of that way, sometimes folks have a heart condition or a weak spot in a vein or artery that you have no way of knowing about. There are a lot of heart attacks during the first big snowstorm of the year from folks shoveling snow after being inactive for a long time. Basically in life we only have today. Tomorrow may never come be that a fire, lightning strike, car accident. We just have to live like we want to for today, and let fate take care of itself. That said prayers for the family, that has to be really rough on them.

I just registered Carol! Pumpkinman here I come! There was no more of the anxiety that I experienced the other day so I must've been ready to do this after all! This and I've hit my diet hard the last two days....I can feel the momentum swinging toward motivation for endurance things again. Of course, I say that as another snowstorm heads our way for potential snow this Tuesday/Wednesday.

Steve, well spoken words as always. My father was stricken with cancer 14 years ago and he has beaten it up to this point....he had a hat made that he still wears to this day: Capre Diem....sieze the day. Its something I believe most of us strive for daily but life isn't always easy and it loves to beat us down.....so your words were a nice reminder to get our minds focused on more important things and less on the less important stuff.

Hi, eveeryone! I've been a bit out of it this week due to RL stuff (not bad, just busy). Had a decent week trainingwise, but still behind where I need to be at this point in my HIM training. Did mae it out for a nice 5.6 mile run today which was great.

Looking forward to the Boston "Tri-mania" expo next saturday. Its a great annual event bringing together all kinds of regional & national tri folks, vendors, race directors, and clinics, etc. A couple years back I attended a seminar on trianing for your first HIM put on by none other than Mark Allen himself! info is here -- http://www.tri-mania.com/Boston.htm anyone around here should go. Lots of motivation to be found!

Did hear today we may have a major snowstorm on Tues/Wed. I wish I were joking!

Cheers!

Bike yesterday was kinda sucky (85 miles on the trainer), but today's run was good. I did 13.1 miles in 1:44 (7:58 mpm pace), last two miles were hardish to keep up a decent pace, so still building endurance.
