Hm. So I'm reading all these really amazing stories that you guys are telling.

And all of a sudden, I realize that my life is.... well, pretty boring. LOL

(Although, "boring" is not necessarily a bad thing!)

Let's see. I have a job. I have a dog. I live in a house. I have a car, which I generally use to drive between my house and the job.... On occasion, I go to the pool. Um. Yep. That about sums it all up.

And by some searching on the web on how to train for a triathlon, I came across this wonderful site call BeginnerTriathlete.com. After lurking on the site for a while, I eventually joined and was part of their mentor program. I have met some wonderful people through BT (though all online). I love the humor, smack, teasing and inspiring that goes on in BT. It is a wonderful support group.

The rest is history. I have three triathlons under my belt. I am now working on going from walking to running, cause I am walking about as fast as I can now. Some of the weight that I have gained over the years from motherhood, wifehood, long work hours and illness is slowly beginning to come off. My goal is not the weight loss, but to become a healthy aerobically fit person. If I manage to do that, then I figure the weight will follow.

My goals have increased. Now that I have three sprints under my belt (and I thought that would be enough), I now plan to do an Oly and then a HIM. Who knows, maybe I can even dream to do an IM when I’m 60.

I saw the mentor groups mentioned on the forums. I haven't really looked at those topics though, as I figured they weren't for a newbie. But now, I'm going to head over there and take a closer look.

Congratulations on completing 3 tris! And good luck with your future goals.

You would need to ask Ron or Marma but there have been two rounds of mentor groups this year and I guess they might do another one in January-ish? Nice way to meet some people and get regular suport... kind of like what the challenges do for people too I guess

The mentor groups are well worth it.

I bet in January they will form new mentor groups. I'm in a group that formed in January and we have a mentor and then the rest are newbies. It is awesome, for our mentor answered a lot of questions, and all us newbies were pretty much in the same boat, learning everything we could for our first races. The mentoring program was supposed to end after 6 months, but everyone liked it so much they let us keep our groups formed. The group I'm in is not as active now as we had been, but we all still keep in touch and check in with our group. Our mentor has signed up to do an IM next year, so we will be supporting her all the way.

So keep an eye out for when they form the next set of mentor groups.

COOL avitar steve!!!
i asked about absorbing husker-tri-girls miles too, no such luck (although the way my week has been it's probably a good thing!!)

glad you finally got an avitar. i like it.

i'm only 7.5 miles away from goal, husband should be here tomorrow morning, and if there's just a SLIGHT let up in this crazy rain, i'll get at LEAST half of that then. THEN husband is off for like 8 or 9 days in a row (ha ha ha like THAT'LL happen) and i'm sure that i'll get LOTS of running in THEN.

i like the legs kendra LOL

Well, it's 2:17 a.m. Central time and I guess that means it's bedtime story time with Jason.

Never in my life had I thought of EVER doing a triathlon. Yeah, I was that kid who up until high school (when sports became more about winning, and less about having fun) I played every sport there is. Football, soccer, basketball, hockey, baseball, tennis, and all that jazz. I got into high school and narrowed it down to just hockey and soccer. Found a school that was willing to let me play both in college, so I did that. Now, don't go thinking I was a great athlete even in college, it was a small division 3 college, with a no-cut (let everyone who wants to play, play) policy. I may have played in 3 soccer games, and 12 hockey games before our program got cut, right in the middle of the Title IX fiasco. It was a combination of that, and lack of funding, the hockey team was the first to go. In one of the last games I played in, I got hit from behind and just about broke my back. Luckily nothing was broken, just stretched to it's fullest extent before it would snap. So, my hockey career would have ended then anyway.

had to take it easy for awhile, and then the weight gain came. Inactivity and a love for DELISH food, and I was soon up over 400 pounds. Which I was, until last christmas. In February, a real unfortunate event happened, then ended up being a blessing in disguise. I blew the motor in my car. So now, instead of driving around everywhere, if I wanted to go somewhere I'd walk, or use public transportation. This reallllllly came in handy at about 3am on alot of mornings, when I couldn't just drive down to the mcdonalds drive through and get a couple double cheeseburgers before bed. If i was really hungry, I'd have to make the choice as if I was hungry enough to go get something to eat, or eat the healthy stuff I usually keep around the house.

After a couple months, I noticed I had lost about 20-30 pounds, and realized that if I could lose that without really trying, that I could probably lose some more if I put some effort into it. I found out that the local high school had open swimming during the summer, so I went and swam a couple times and remembered how much I enjoyed it, then one day, June 18th to be exact, I bought a bicycle and officially proclaimed myself "THE NEXT GREAT AMERICAN TRIATHLETE" as a joke. I thought that since I owned a bicycle, and swam a few laps here and there, that I could call myself a triathlete.

I honestly don't remember where the exact turning point was, but one of my friends was contemplating doing a triathlon, and when I found out that a Sprint triathlon could be pretty doable, I started looking for plans, and found BT. I tried a 12 week plan, and got bored with the small distances of biking/swimming right away, so just started pushing myself futher and further, and decided to look into doing my first tri. The most viable option was going to be to do an "indoor tri" basically timed events on a treadmill, exercise bike, and in the pool, where they would tally up your distances and rank the competitors that way. But my brother, who has actually been pretty unsupportive, said that that wasn't a triathlon, so I started looking for a "real triathlon" and decided to do one at the end of September.

So, I did a sprint (which my brother still won't accept the fact that i did a triathlon....until I do the Ironman or something) and was very happy that...

a) I didn't finish last
b) I didn't even finish in the bottom ten (but close)
c) most of all... I FINISHED!!

And now, I'm addicted. I can't wait until next summer, I plan to do 3-4 sprints, and maybe move up to an oly distance the following summer.

I'm 27, i'm a Hotel Manager (which means I have an awesome exercise room, and pool right here at work I can use during the crummy wisconsin winter) I also work with a professional hockey team, the Milwaukee Admirals, who are the AAA affiliate of the Nashville Predators.

i'd add a triathlon pic, but the ones that my friend took were just...REALLY blurry, crappy, and no fun.....and sadly she missed my sommersault over the finish line I'm at work right now, but if you guys really want some picture-y goodness, I can throw up a pic tomorrow.

Whats this about us losing the challenge because of husker-tri-girl??? did i miss something? I thought we were solidly in 3rd place?

Grats on the Tri completion. I am still a bit away from being in shape probly for even a sprint. And its not like there are alot of tri's this time of year. Oh well. As for your brother turning his nose up at you... invite him on a 40 mile bike ride or a 6 mile run or both back to back and then let him complain about how your accomplishment isn't worth celebrating! I am betting he will um say no thanks.. where's my beer.

Anyway grats again.

Snow all over the road this am and I was gona do a 34 mile bike... well maybe it will melt this afternoon.

Found this on the Mentor thread (sticky):

*NOTE - The May-August 2007 BT Mentor Program is closed. We will start accepting mentors in December to start our New Years 2008 program.

There's a lot more info about the mentor program in that post:

There's a Gonzaga high school here in the DC area.  I've seen sweatshirts that look just like the one you were wearing, so they must have the same colors.  I think their football team is nationally ranked.

Did my 5 mile run this morning (5.01 on the Nike+).  Did my run/walk intervals for the majority of the time.  It was really beautiful.  Our leaves are peaking right now and the weather was in the 70s this morning.  Really nice.

Walk planned for tomorrow, so maybe I'll have a few more miles for our Monday check in.  Have a great weekend, everyone!

So many posts today! I'll just comment on 'em all at once.

Kendra/kns - Um. That's some pair of legs you've got there. LOL

Steve/Baowolf - Congratulations on getting an avatar up. As for absorbing Husker_Tri_Girl's miles, I wish. Several of us are willing to take them on. But I don't believe we are allowed to do this. (I think Lyssa and Fielding asked already.) And, you have SNOW? It's 77 F here today. And sunny.

Jason - Congratulatons on the weight loss! Congratulations on completing a tri! (I have yet to enter one.) Ignore your brother's comments. Or challenge him to finish a tri *ahead* of you. That ought to keep him busy. I saw on the Mentoring program, that one of the things they dicuss is how to deal with nonsupportive people. This might be useful for you. Sign ups start at the end of December. (I plan on signing up. I could use a mentoring group!) I am VERY jealous of your ability to workout and swim at work! As for the Challenge, yes, we're in third place. That's including Tri_Girl's percentage. In other words, the rest of us are doing a GREAT job!

Laurie/klgray - GREAT run!

4.8 today. i was soaked, and cold.
i thought a lot about the barbaric behavior that is accepted-and RELISHED-even EXPECTED in the name of athletasism. example, blowing snot rockets.
i saw in runners world magazine a month or so ago an article on how to do this PROPERLY! well, it was raining, and cold, no one was around. so i tried it. *embarassed grin* the first one worked perfectly! i was amazed, it was like i had spent my life being rude and distgusting. the second one, well, ended up on my sleeve, and thats when i realized, this is all perfectly NORMAL behavior for an athlete, this is what they DO. this is what is celebrated in winners circles, not blowing snot rockets per SE, but doing what has to be done. acheiving. and then i made a wild jump. what makes that any different than motherhood? (or fatherhood really) you do what has to be done. ok, i am the first to admit that in the name of motherhood, i have never blown a snot rocket before. but i've walked around with barf on my clothes, i've spent sleepless nights with a sick child. i can make pumpkin pie, and do dishes, vacuum, and nurse the baby ALL AT THE SAME TIME, ok. so maybe its a jump, but i was running in a downpour, and i was freezing my butt off!!
ok. i gotta go--you guys rock--keep running!!

Hey guys,

Sorry I've been a little quiet lately. Really no excuse except a little illness keeping my online time down a bit. After a wonderful 13 hour sleep last night (and another 2 hour nap this afternoon), I'm feeling much better, so caught up reading everyone's great stories.

My story is real short. I'm a total non-athlete (my athletic high point was varsity tennis in high school). I've always been overweight and massively lacking in endurance and strength. Anyway, for a few years I've had the delusion (it was delusional then, but I've got a plan now) that I would eventually get in shape and lose weight and get into adventure racing (I admit to being slightly masochistic). But with all the disciplines you have to learn plus the endurance needed, it's awful daunting and I'd always quit pretty much before I'd start when it came to exercise.

But then it occurred to me that triathlon is a great way to get endurance and some skills needed for adventure racing. And also, it's generally cheaper (yeah, trust me, Ironman ain't got nothing on some of these insane 10 day races that cost like $10000+ for a team of 4). And there's also just such a wealth of training knowledge. So, that brought me here and I've been working out for something like 5 weeks so far. My goal is to do a small triathlon in July 2008 and then the IronGirl in Columbia, MD as the race I'm actually going to work to do a good time in (I figure the first one is just an experiment and a way to get an idea of how I'm doing).

I don't have many pictures of myself (not a fan of how un-photogenic I think I am). I did find one of me driving the ambulance on our fire dept website (it was during a parade). I don't mind it because I'm kinda hard to see with my sunglasses and hat

As for the challenge, I'm trying to keep up my mileage despite my calf and the disappointment of not being able to run yet. I was hoping to start running on Monday but my calf is definitely still sore and I'm afraid if I run I'll put myself back a few days. So, think I'll give it a few more days.

Keep at it Apples! You guys are definitely an inspiration.

Going up a steep hill with clipless pedles clipped in is probly not the best time to find that your new bike has gotten to the point of needing a tune up for its shifting due to the chain adjusting to use... ouche, man you go down fast when that chain jumps off the sprockets under torc with your feet clipped in..

Oh well off to research how to tune this thing up.

Not to worry, Baowolf! You can *increase* your running goal, you know!

Bummer about the chain. I had one break on my bike when I was about 12. I didn't have clipless pedals, either. Boom! And I ended up with some stitches, too.

It Is just irritating when the bike shopt is 150miles away and you have to work and all. I tried to retune it myself, but probly screwed it up worse.
