Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Those peeps are hilarious. First tri prep, umm, okay I guess. I need to get in the pool some more this week and next...but I feel ready for the S/B/R portions. I need to look at transitions and figure out my layout and all this weekend and write out a plan (if I write it out, I'll remember it) for it all. So, I think still doing the workouts, and then the race plan is really what I need to focus on right now. I have no time goal, and won't set one, cause this is my "get my feet wet, become a triathlete" race and I want to have fun with it--sure, I'll be competitive (I can't not be...'tis my nature), but fun and learning is the key. The swim in a pool all zig zaggy will be weird, but oh well. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey guys....you are all doing so well. I haven't popped in here recently for some reason but it was nice to catch up with everyone's accomplishments and questions/advice. I finally bought a new bike this past weekend. Had to keep the cost down, so I got a Trek 1.2 WSD. I wanted the 1.5 for the components, but of course Trek doesn't make that in the women's "size" and it just wasn't quite the best fit (seems I'm a bit between your average guy and your average girl in proportions). And, besides, I liked the colors of the 1.2 better (even managed to get light blue pedals to match!). Dang this post just "posted" twice without me hitting submit...odd. Anyway, as I was about to say, there's very much a difference between the stationary bike at the gym and my new bike on the trainer. I couldn't go longer than about 5 minutes before my legs were killing me. So, I'm going to be working hard to get my legs fit on the trainer before heading out on the roads. I'll definitely be in the March challenege (and just signed up for it), although I doubt I'll hit the roads much next month. I'm too cheap to buy tights right now so will need to wait for it to warm up before going outside. My running has been going pretty well this month and I'm really starting to enjoy it some days (if the weather is nice). What an interesting concept. I'm starting to ramp up my workout schedule this week with 2-3 workouts in each sport plus a little weight lifting. It's going to cut into my sleep schedule a bit (or should I say cut into my couch potato time in the evenings as I'll have to go to bed early), but I think it's time to start pressing my body. I've been coasting alot this last month or so. And I just got a new nutrition program that I ordered called Precision Nutrition. It's by a coach/nutritionist and seems to be so much better than just plain old diet programs. Once I get more of it processed, I'll fill you guys in. So, keep up the good work folks. And I'll try to stop by more often from now on. Edited by AmbulanceDriver 2008-02-26 9:31 AM |

I have a Trek 1200 and although its really only an entry level road bike it has served me really well so it sounds to me like you get something that will work really well for you I didnt get a WSD bike... they dont fit me properly... which is kind of annoying as they usually come in prettier colours! Im not sure if you have ridden on a trainer before... but its harder than the road... because the resistance is consistent and there is no free wheeling (gliding down hills or along flats not pedalling) so when you get out of the road you should find it not as tough as the trainer! Good news I hope! Sounds like yuor training is really stepping up and I look forward to hearing about your new nutrition program! happy training! |

There is a really good list under articles here on BT, I think by OntheRun (joe) that is all about what you need to take to your first race... you might fing that useful? Also... well youve BQ'd a marathon so I KNOW you will be competitive and you have the endurance to finish so just get out there and have fun! |

It'll be fun! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() transition was what freaked me out the most my first race. it ended up not being NEARLY as bad as i was afraid it might be. my biggest problem (even still) is just trying to figure out what to wear under my wetsuit. last time, i wore a sports bra and my swimsuit, then in T1 peeled off my wetsuit, left my swim suit on, pulled shorts and tee shirt over top, but i got WAY too hot with that many layers on. so i'm working on a new "race outfit" i think it's a great idea to practice a transition, i never even thought of it, but if you go out for a bike, and already have your run stuff layed out, you can brick AND practice your T2. that's awesome |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() so my tri will have a crazy transition because they set up T1 for rain. Bought some tri shorts and a top and have swum in both, biked and run in the shorts but wore some knee warmers with the shorts since it was cold. Hoping the adrenaline on rest day will help keep me warm. but I will definitely on a bike jacket for T1. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have tri top (actually a BT one I will get to meet lots of BT'ers--I'm sharing a hotel room with one in fact, and a local church hosts a free pasta dinner and give away the night before, so that's cool. Okay, I am almost done at work--been fairly non-busy here, so that's good cause I have swim class tonight and I really enjoy those! Then I need to prep dinner for tomorrow. |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Britt - be patient with the pool swim... as a general rule people tend to underestimate their time in the water which can be really annoying if you get stuck behind someone... thankfully because of the way they do it you can usually pass in the lane or at the wall so you should be ok!!! Definatley get a trisuit - for anyone who hasnt got one, or a tri top and shorts. It was the one thing I swore I needed to do after my first race where I put on shorts and a top on over my wet swimsuit,... not fun for riding/running in! A trisuit makes much more difference... then if the weather is cold just take something warmer that you can layer on over the top and dont mind discarding with a volunteer along the race route... If you can Britt - practice the transitions as in changing from bike shoes to running shoes, putting on helment and unglasses etc... it sounds silly but if good for the nerves! Another thing on transitions... do them with a purpose but dont rush... its better to remember everything you need and take 10 seconds longer than get out on the course nad realise yuo forgot your sunglasses/hat/nutrition/socks etc as that can turn a good solid race into pain/agony or even a disaster!
|
![]() ![]() |
Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I want to add a couple things about transitions. I am a sock girl thru and thru so I put my socks on in T1. I open my tri shoes and place my half-rolled socks in the shoe. I throw my goggles and cap into my crate (plastic cube) grab left sock, roll on, slide foot into bike shoe, close strap. Repeat with right foot. My helmet is upside down unfastened on my aerobars. My sunglasses are inside it. So I slap on my glasses, grab the helmet by the straps and swing it onto my head and fasten the chin strap. I try to rack my bike by the seat (it's a 51 cm so it usually fits nicely under the rack) so all I do is grab the saddle, push under the rack and head out to the mount line. Coming in to T2, I rack my bike by the handlebars, unsnap helmut, place in crate, slide off shoes, slide on running shoes that are laced with bungees, grab my number belt and hat and I'm off. Do not sit down if you can help it. Sitting only loses time. I got my transitions down to around a minute with my best one being a 36 second T2. I usually count racks from the swim exit and then count racks from the bike finish. I use land marks (trees, rocks, parked cars) to help identify my rack. I have a really popular bike so my transition towel (from my alma mater) is my identifying mark! The whole rain bag thing will slow you down and make it more complicated, but it is well worth it for dry shoes and socks! I've got my first race of 2008 on Saturday. It's a 10k run. I'm terrible at pacing. I usually go out way too fast and die at the halfway point. Any tips or advice? Edited by barqhead 2008-02-27 8:55 PM |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Awesome tips ya'll--Pam, very detailed, thank you! You gave me a perfect visual. As for 10K pacing---I'm not the best with pacing, but am definitely getting better. If I'm towards the front, I get caught up with the spring butts and go out to fast--I did this on my 5K earlier this month, and slowed significantly the last bit from where I started. So, while you don't want to start way back and have to weave in and out, don't be to far up (not sure how big the race is)...initially it's going to be weird cause people are all bunched up, once you un-bunch, just check your pace and see where you are in relation to how you know you can go and then adjust. I don't know how much you like to look at the watch/garmin/etc. that you have, that's totally individually driven--just do what is comfortable for you and stay steady and you'll do great. Usually it's that initial start that throws folks off, so at the 1/2 or 3/4 mile mark, look to adjust to where you want to pace. GOOD LUCK! Have fun! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() One little thing to add to Pams comments... dont forget a towel and an extra bottle of water... if you are putting socks on or not... avoiding blisters by cleaning any gunk of your feet before putting them in your bike shoes is always a good idea... I wear socks for the run but not the bike... I did find getting socks on wet feet in my frist tri a real nuisance... (I was still wearing socks on the bike at this stage) |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TexasMPGal - 2008-02-27 5:19 PM Any tips on good ways to mark your bike rack for easy finding on race day as I hope to not be too befuddled coming out of the swim I'm far from the expert as I'm still months from my first tri (thank GOD!), but I've read the idea of tying a helium balloon to the bike rack at your spot so you can easily see it. Not sure if this is truly something that people do or if it's frowned upon or whatever, but if transition is going to be large, it might be an idea (and you could get one that is nice and encouraging too). Now, granted, I'm the kind of person who wouldn't do that just because I'm too reserved, but if it's your style, that's one idea. |
