Woke up to 5-6" of snow overnight with more coming today...no training on today's agenda (plus folks are coming to town tomorrow so I'm on house cleaning duty).

Scott, I've got a friend who went off of grains completely and says he feels wonderful. Not sure I could ever do something like that, I like my bread/bagels/pasta, etc too much.

Right now I eat no grains (and no sugars including no sport nutrition products).

I know its hard for lots of people to cut thtem ocmpletely, but I really do think most people feel better once they've cut grains out of their diet.

If you can do it and tri train I applaud you.  I'd try but the rest of my household wants no part of that, and honestly if everyone isn't on board I just don't have the will power to pull it off.  After the initial shock to your system I do find that most people feel better without grains.

That's what I'm struggling with.  My husband and son live on carbs, and not the good kind.  I have cut back considerably.

Kelly - what does your typical day look like for meals/snacks?  I used to look at you log to get ideas.

The best I could manage is getting a trainer at the gym to use calipers.  No way my husband would support any sort of high cost method of BF testing at this point.  That's for 2 reasons: (1) we don't have the extra cash right now because of holiday spending; and (2) he'd think it would be feeding into my disordered thinking.  If I were to mention anthing about bodyfat, he'd begin to think I have a problem.

Calipers are fine.  If you get repeatedly tested just try to use the same trainer so that it's as consistent as possible.

Karen when I went no carb this is what I ate almost daily.

Pre-workout: protein shake

Post workout: 3 eggs & turkey sausage

Mid morning snack: almonds

lunch: lean protein + salad

afternoon snack: cheese stick(s)

dinner: lean protein and green veggies and salad

pre bed: 1/2c cottage cheese

Now if you're not going whole hog no carb you can add in fruits both whole and dehydrated,  beans, other less refined sources of carbs.

Calipers are completely fine.

Having an actual measurement is the opposite of disordered.  If you have a measurement, you're basing your goals (and behavior to get to the goals) on an actual, quantifiable principle rather than just ,aking it up as you go along.

uhcoog - 2011-12-05 2:14 PM Ahhhhhh..... lifting at lunch is good for the psyche.

Just got back from strenght workout as well Scott.  Been doing that 3x a week, and a few rides during the week on the trainer.  Nothing too serious.  here's a question for you Scott (and something I laugh at everytime I go to the gym).  Why do these guys in the gym, feel the need to carry a 1 gallon jug full of water with them to the gym, and drink out of it.  They carry it around like it's their child.  Shouldn't they be hydrated pre workout?  It's just comical to me, but mayber there is reason behind it.

It's a meathead thing.  I have no idea.  Other than most "serious" lifters I know measure their daily water intake by gallon, so maybe this makes the math easier.  I never got it either.

The other thing that amuses me are the guys with hulkish upper bodies and legs smaller than mine.  Dude do some squats.

Meathead, make the math easier - haha!

There's a guy at my gym that walks around with a gallon of what I can only assume is gatorade.  It looks like pee, and is disgusting!  He needs a new flavor (different color) or should switch to water.

I eat no  sugars (although I use xylitol in my homemade protein bars - made with oat floar). I feel so much better without processed foods and very minimal carbs (mainly from fruit).

I said it in my log ... Nothing tells you you are on tired legs like swimming!Scraped 2 toes to the point of blood working on my backstroke flip turn ... Don't ask, tired and turn didn't go at all as planned. So I am guess the backstroke flip turn is one of those thing that just take a lot of practice? I am getting the number of strokes to the flag ok, but I screw up the flip to forward, come off the wall wrong, or come off the wall angled downward.

Core, ride, yoga.  Will get some trainer and treadmill time in at lunch.  Started lifting at lunch yesterday, which I think I've already posted.  I think I'm going to keep this up through February at least.  Seems to reset my ever rising frustration levels at work.  Going for strength only, no size, or endurance because I can get in, get out, and don't drench myself in sweat mid-day.  My joints no likey me this morning though.

Morning, all!

Up for an easy run this morning, and then I'm going to swim and lift tonight.  I was trying to work my way up to 40 mpw using Barryp's plan, but I felt like was on the edge of injury every time I ran.  I'm going to hang at 35 mpw for now.  It will be more like 30 mpw during the summer months, because I really want to focus on my bike.

Carrie - Have you studied the backstroke flipturn on youtube at all?  I haven't worked on those since high school, but I had it down back then.  Not fun

Yep, was on youtube last Thursday night after practice.  That is why I wanted to go last night and practice.  Not easy and all about timing, but fun once you get it.

I think the easiet way to do a backstroke flipturn is to focus on coming off the wall on your side (rather than your back).  It may be slightly illegal when you first begin (where you'll be a little bit on your stomach) but its easier to control.

Scott--

What's up with this:

Sources have confirmed to The Courant that Boise State, San Diego State, Houston, Central Florida and SMU will be added. Boise State and San Diego State will be football-only members, while the three other schools will join in all sports.

Big East is trying to keep their automatic qualifying status when the BCS' contract runs out next year.  As far as UH goes it puts us in a conference with Boise who is now a perrenial power and will bump our strength of schedule in football, plus basketball will be nuts now.
