Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Ok, thanks, Rudy, Jeff, and Michele. Basically you've all told me I need to chill. LOL. I can work on that I had a fitness assessment at the gym last night. Body fat % is 16.9 with calipers. A rough estimate of my BMR is 1706. Arm strength was average. Flexibility was very poor. Cardio was at the very good - elite level (based on their categories). It was funny -- put my body age at 27 with the potential to be 22 (if I increase strength and flexibility). I am super, duper happy with that body fat %. Pretty much tells me that the quality of my diet is spot on. The trainer made me write out what I eat in 2 days, and he said I really need to be eating more. He is concerned about my moving on to long course racing, because I have no idea how much/ what I need to be eating to keep my systems going while training for those events. He suggested I see a nutritionist. Edited by jarvy01 2011-12-14 6:36 AM |

He suggested I see a nutritionist. Replace weight lifting with yoga and pilates as you get closer to the season. You'll see your flexibility and functional strength go up. As far as nutritionists it's tricky. You have to find one that is accustomed to dealing with athletes and not sedentary people. I'd say start with doing as much research as you can on your own and see if you can tweak things.
I ran 9+ with a group of friends from CyTri this morning. It's the first time I've ever had a group run with people of the same fitness level. 9 miles flies by when you're distracted. |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Whoa - Happy Birthday Kelly. Big plans tonight to eat whatever you want????? Jen, you are turning into a Kelly with this addiction. Like everyone else said, be patient and keep going. You'll get there. 3 miles on the treadmill this afternoon at the gym, followed by 25 minutes of ST/circuits and some core. So afraid to pick up running again. I ran at a slower pace for me, and it felt fine, but fearful of going under 8 min pace. Ughhhh. |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Question for you experts. In my current situation, with shoulder surgery coming up Jan 13th. I really wanted to do the Hyannis Cape Cod HM end of February. I have not been running much at all in the past couple months. Just here and there. I still have a decent base from all of 2011. Do you think it is possible to start building the run again, starting this week, all the way until Jan 13th surgery day, and be able to start running again say, maybe 2 weeks after surgery. Giving me all of February leading up to the HM to prepare? I have no idea if I'll be able to run 2 weeks post surgery. I originally just wrote off being able to do the HM, but now am reconsidering. |

The better shape you are going into surgury, the better shape you are going to be in post-op. I think that you're going to have to play it by ear after surgury BUT if you want any chance of running Hyannis you should train for it over the next 4 weeks and see how your recovery goes. While your fitness will be a little off post-op, you're not going to "loose" any miles you put in now. Take me as an example. I took 2 complete weeks off after IMFL but I am completely capable of running a fairly solid half marathon right now with only 4 weeks back. Even if you start running on February 1, you can can probably still have a fairly soild race. |

Master 2151 Johns Creek, Georgia | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Happy Birthday Kelly - hope you had a great day! So my husband has decided to take up beer brewing as a hobby. His first batch is mighty tasty! It's an ale that tastes very similar to Stone Arrogant Bastard - which I love. It's pretty darn good. On Sunday he did his second batch, a stout. I think I'm in trouble! |

I have a bunch of friends though that started square foot gardening just to grow their own hops and stuff. Good times. Got a little food poisoning type deal last night. So I slept in this morning. I feel so lazy. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED I wonder, I know the elevation changes are good for me, but am I better suited running on the treadmill at home without a fan at this point to try and prepare my body for Orlando? Usually, I run with 1 fan on, but maybe I should eliminate if the weather down there is not going to cooperate? |
