A serious question though - I had planned to use the Fink Intermediate Plan for the full course with a few modifications due to the lack of pool access. Is there any disadvantage to using a plan for the Full course if my race is a half iron distance? Other than training burnout that is.

They're both going to develop slowtwitch muscles, so from that perspective you'll be OK.  On the other hand, the training for a full is nearly 30% more per week on average than a half.  Training burnout will be your biggest issue for sure.  I would advise you to look at a training plan dedicated to a half.  Gale Bernhardt might have some of hers online for free.  The BT ones are really good- I used one for Ironman Kansas back in 2010.  The volume is brutal though.

I better get my own butt in gear and start planning 2013 triathlons.  I'm doing my annual 100x100 swim on January 27th.  If you guys recall I did it last year in April.  They're moving it to January this year, so you'll see a LOT of swimming in my training logs these next two months.  Since this group is a "swimming motivational" group, you guys will get a lot out of me!!!

I finally got my aero helmet yesterday and entertained my wife by wearing it around the house last night. It looks pretty slick when you are in the aero position on the bike even though I was on the trainer. She understood me trying it on to make sure it fit, etc. It makes me look like a big dork when I'm doing the dishes though. I just kept telling her it was making me faster!

I got a Spiuk. It's pretty comfortable and is super adjustable. I'm not sure how good it will be with only the 2 vents in the front and the air port in the back as the only ventilation for a 56 mile bike ride in August but we'll see.

Boulder in August is like an oven.  Definitely ride a lot in that helmet over the summer to make sure it's going to work for you.

Thanks Matt - I was worried about the heat in Boulder in August too. I plan to do quite a few rides with it to see how good the ventilation is in the heat of summer.

I was also reading the article on brick workouts on the BT home page and got to wondering if I could combine my bike and run workouts during the week. The article made sense that I won't be running on fresh legs and it would really help my scheduling if I could combine the two workouts time wise. I was reviewing the plan and Fink specifically labeled some workouts as bricks but the rest not. Is there a downside to doing more brick type workouts than what the plan calls for? For my schedule, its pretty easy to have the entire evening available for training, but mornings are pretty tough at our house. I'm not a 4 a.m. workout person anyway.

I see that we have moved into the archived section!

Our family is signed up for a half marathon. It's the Sandy Hook Elementary Half with all proceeds going to a memorial fund for the families of the affected. It's a virtual event and gives you the opportunity to do all the miles at once or break them up as you see fit. I was going to break up the miles for my daughter, but she decided that she just wants to do it all at once. We'll be doing it on the treadmill as it's icy and snowy here, so I figured we can just put movies on and let her walk until she can't walk any longer.

I can't figure out how to do clickable links, but you can copy/paste the one below if you are interested in participating.

What an awesome idea! Of course, I can't do 13 miles at once yet. Maybe your daughter can give me some tips Laughing

Steve,

I'd say the more you can brick the better off you're going to be.  I bricked for the first time in forever yesterday, and I forgot how sluggish your legs feel.  Definitely, by all means combine them if you can/want to.  You'll get used to the feeling and perform better.

What a cool idea, Mariah!!!!  Clickable links.  I'm kind of annoyed with BT for that lately.  To make a link clickable- get ready for this.  Highlight your link- in this case http://www.active.com/half-marathon/tampa-fl/sandy-hook-elementary-memorial-half-marathon-and-5k-2013?cmp=1745

Then, in the editor click the "chain" icon and enter the URL (just paste it), and you'll get:

http://www.active.com/half-marathon/tampa-fl/sandy-hook-elementary-memorial-half-marathon-and-5k-2013?cmp=1745

Kind of a redundant PITA if you ask me, but like I always say, I don't work here :D

Oh, and yes, we're archived for 2012.  Ron will be opening up the 2013 mentor group in the next week.  It's usually open before Christmas.  Does anyone have a suggestion for our 2013 team name?  "Matt Gilmartin's Mentor Group" is pretty boring!!!

Regarding the virtual half marathon and 5k, I went to the website. There is some talk/concern that it might be a scam. I'm not saying its not a great cause and that I'd do it in a minute, but I think it might be worthwhile waiting a day or two to make sure its legit.

It was in all the comments along the right side of the screen.

Wouldn't that just figure. It would seem more legit if it wasn't a Facebook event page. I'll have to wait and see I guess.

I went there to sign up. I will still sign up as long as I know the money is going to the families and not some schmuck in Florida (nothing against Florida - its the address where the person "running" this event resides).
