Hi Mark, well done on the weight loss - excellent progress!

What tips do you think helped most from the book (always after anything to help with my swimming!!).

Thanks Michelle, so far so good ! feels great !

The first 5 chapters were geared for the beginner, and focused mainly on theory and balance. Most of this I assume you ( and most of the readers ) would already know but for myself it was the first time I had anyone describe swimming in detail and helped me greatly. He focused on the need for decreasing resistance which would reduce stroke count and increase stroke length. The things that helped me so far were basic fundimentals like keeping your head down, balance in the water, and slipping your arm in the water as if reaching through a sleave of a jacket..  I went swimming after reading the first few chapters and reduced my stroke count from 30/100 yds to 21/100 yds and my time reduced by 20 secounds to 2:05/100 yds. This is still not a great time by any means but I am greatly encouraged and did not expect this much of a change so quick. It also seems more effortless.

He is getting to more advanced drills now, like swimming with your hands in a fist, so as to focus on "feeling the water" with your arms and torso to help you slip through it.  I really like the way he describes things in a way that a novice like me can understand. He has a dvd that I think I will get.

Mark

I may need to get this book, too.  I do some of the drills that I see people describe, but don't really understand why they do them. Thanks for the recap.

Oh, and I should extend my offer to the newer people of this group:

If you send me a video of your swimming technique, I can critique it and give you drills/suggestions on how to improve.

JF is still peachy after today's swim and my plan still calls for a 53 minute bike ride! Guess it will be a drainer ride for me!

Whew!  After a whirlwind week of being under the weather, I finally was able to see the light at the end of the tunnel yesterday.  I've still got the sniffles, but the other "crap" seems to have gone away.

So, I went to the Y today - my first day there as a member!  Man, running on a treadmill SUCKS!  I haven't trained at all with an iPod because we can't use 'em during tris, so I haven't wanted to get spoiled, but I may have to buy one to endure that treadmill.

I had the pool all to myself and it was awesome.  I haven't been swimming since my last tri in September, and I was able to pick up right where I left off.  It was soooo relaxing to swim.  I miss it already.

Sounds like everyone's doing a good job of keeping peachy.  Great work, everybody.

Lora you sound like you are in heaven Glad to hear you are feeling better. I'd definitely go the ipod on the treadmill!!

James - Nice photo - looking very buff.

I scraped in for my 8th peach but only just - stuck with physio as I just wasn't up to anything too physical yesterday but good to go today.

Finally feeling better.  I usually only get sick once a year but this is my second so far.  At least its gone.  Just being able to breath through my nose will be a big improvement.   8 peaches and 23 to go.

Wow, been gone for a few days and it explodes on here.  Doc finally cleared me this morning and I finished up the last of the meds that were making me light headed.  Finally got in some weights today and it felt good.  The first day of my peaches begins.  Looks like some of the original folks have also been sick and under the weather and the newbies have taken over!

Thats cool and so far reading back and seeing everyones progress for this month has been really motivational.

Lora -
Don't be afraid of training with an ipod. When you are racing, you'll be so much in the zone you won't even notice there is no music playing in your ear. So you might as well make those treadmill runs more enjoyable.

OR,

You could start running outside.
My Thursday's run will be done in a forecasted -4 degrees C (or 24 oF).

Yay! It sounds like people are finally recovering nicely!

I dropped from 1st to 2nd in the get your a$$ on the trainer ride today after everyone got their weight loss bonus of 100 points per pound. I lost one pound; they lost four. So now I have to make up 5 hours worth  of biking cuz they lost more weight than I did. Maybe I should just stop eating Just kidding. I'm just really stoked about the amount of bike time I've been getting in this month.  I've already more than doubled my bike time from last month in just over a week. Although I do believe if i keep this pace up, I may not be able to sit down next week

I may actually opt for the latter.  Instead of the treadmill today, I hit the indoor track.  17 laps equals 1 mile.  That was way better than the treadmill, but I think I prefer outside - even in the cold.

Congrats on racking up those bike miles and for losing one pound.  That's one pound that wasn't there before.

17 laps = 1 mile?  Don't you get dizzy?

My traiing plan has me doing a lot of timed runs, so I opted for a dreadmill the other day (really cold out, almost 30 which is cold in Memphis) and it really was not too bad. I didn't have to wear alot of layers, no headlamp...think it might be something I work in once a week or so.

Spin class today - lots of speed work- speed, speed, speed. legs are gone. Time 1hr

Ab work after words. No 5k for me this weekend but will be running in a 5k next weekend Anyhow i was asked yesterday by my neighbor who is leaving for iraq on sunday to go for a run with him this saturday. It's a 5 mile run and the good or bad thing about which ever way one looks at it is that 2 miles of this run has an incline. The climb is a steady incline and reaches to a 6% grade it's going to be a great workout.

One of the reasons I dont run when its cold is that I have tendonitis in my ankle and I have heard that running in cold weather is not good for that. I am getting tired of the treadmill though and might bundle up and risk it.....Y'all that run in below freezing are just plain nuts though Laughing

6.4km yesterday.

It looks like my back is recovering.
The run was in the rain, and the 2 inches of snow on the ground was melting. My feet were soaked, but it was acting like a wetsuit (the water inside my shoe was fairly warm).

Joseph - That is a solid swim workout.

I kind of miss the pool, but I have to move on from that part of my life. It's too addicting.

Day 11 and 11 peaches for me - woo hoo!!

Today was 1850 swim, 25 minutes of weights and 40 minute run.

Very hot and windy tonight on my run and the heat hasn't even cranked up yet.

Today our trainer is going to have us do a simulated sprint tri in the gym using the pool, spin bike and treadmill. This is the distance we are going to cover.
500 meter swim.
35 minutes on the spin bike on the 4th to 5th setting at 17 to 19 mph should be the equivalent of 12.4 miles, and then the 5k run on the treadmill. I was told that we're not going to be timed, but hey i never leave home with out my stop watch on my wrist so i will be timing myself it will be fun. Wish Me Luck.

Have fun!!

The treadmill / bike trainer will be much tougher than on race day (if the winds aren't howling). So when you race, you'll feel as light as a feather.

The swim, however, will feel much tougher come race day.

Another 5k run for me today.
