Everybody meet their goals for today?  Been getting good trainer rides in the past couple of days.  Trying to improve my bike for the race coming up next weekend.  Unfortunately, that means letting the run slide a little.Undecided  Gonna have to try to fix that.  I will definitely get in a good run tomorrow.  Hoping for a swim too.  Guess we'll see how the day plays out.

Yes, I think I can meet my goals for today.  It's a rest day.   And good timing, today's one of those "everything hurts" day.  Especially my hip & shoulder are bothersome.   So I'll give them a rest and hopefully tomorrow will better.

I can definitely meet my goal of a rest day today.  Taper madness is in full swing, I am jumpy and jittery.

Writebrained - 2009-02-26 3:12 PM Ran outside in  shorts today!    Snow in the forecast for the weekend though....

I wished I'd had shorts yesterday for the first half of my run.  The sun was out and the black pants were too much.  But then the clouds moved in and it started to rain lightly.  So in the end I was happy for the pants.

My trainer came today.  I've tested it and it's much quieter than my husbands.  Maybe it's the skinny tires.  The best part is that it's red, I love red.

A picture of it and the bike are in my album now.

Nice shot of the bike, but is it just me, or are you riding uphill all the time?

I noticed that too.  I think it's the camera angle though since it doesn't feel uphill.

How funny...it does look like it's uphill!
Speaking of trainers, I have a couple of questions...do you just put your bike on and go or do you use a special "trainer" tire?  Is there any resistance?

I just put my bike on and go.  The tires for most road or tri bikes work well on trainers.  MTN bikes, not so much.  You can buy special tires for a trainer, but I don't think that most people use them.  Most trainers use the gearing of the bike to change resistance though some have variable controls.

Thanks Scott!  Are all trainers pretty much the same and to buy an expensive one is to buy more the name brand (although I don't even know what that would be).

The reason I'm asking 20 questions is that my hubby saw one and was asking me about them and to be honest, I didn't even know there was such a thing until I joined this site and had to ask what the heck it was.  I will say that I didn't feel the need to spend the money on one while here in Hawaii and I think I saw a look of relief cross his face.

No, they are not all the same.  There are lots of different options and levels.  You can get different types of resistance (magnetic, fluid, combo), remote control (cable to control resistance) or not, and on the extreme end computer controlled that will even simulate road bumps.  I got a good lesson at the shop I bought mine from.

Mine is considered an intermediate level.  It has a heavy flywheel, remote cable, 6 or 7 levels of resistance (I think).  The cost was under $200.

I took it for inaugural ride today and it was fine.  I found it easier to use the remote than to change gears but that's probably just a personal thing.  I was happy with how easy it is to get it set up.

Don't like the wear on the tire though.  May just have to suck it up.  I heard that they make a very hard tire just for trainers.  It can't be used on the road though 'cause it has very poor traction.

After I got it set up again today (had to move to a different room) I looked at it to see if it was level.  I realized that the angled top tube also makes it look like it's going up hill.  To look at it today from a straight angle the wheel hubs are level.

Lara is right.  they aren't all the same, though in the end you get the same result... riding indoors on your own bike.  As for all the extras, it's based on your personal preferences as to what bells and whistles you want.  I did a lot of research and asked a lot of people who use trainers before I bought mine. I ended up getting a Kinetic fluid trainer based on what many people advised me.  I got a really great deal on it, and it should last me a lifetime.  As for whether or not it would be useful where you live, I kinda doubt it.  If you had 6 mos. of cold weather like I do here, I don't think you could be competitive without one. (stationary bikes just aren't the same as riding your own bike)  MY $.02

Wish me luck folks.  Heading out for a weekend camp-out with my scouts.  Yes, it's still cold, and yes, we are crazy.  But it's all in good fun, right?  Hoping to get a couple of runs in on Saturday and Sunday out in the woods.  The weather is supposed to be sunny and in the upper 20's so not too bad.Laughing

No, I totally agree that it just wouldn't be worth the money living here especially when there are so many other goodies to choose from that I would get more use out of!   Have fun with your scouts!

Also gotta get a thanks for the info out to Lara!

So Scott is off camping in the cold, Anne is racing in warm Tampa.  Anyone else doing something fun this weekend?

I did a run/bike brick today.  Ooo, so much fun!  At least it went better than last weekend's attempt.  That'll be the most interesting thing for me for a while.
