acumenjay - 2010-06-23 10:20 AM Been hammering the bike this month....run is in the gutter and looking to turn it around...swim has come along nicely for me

Wife signed me up for RI 70.3 on July 11th as a surprise father's day gift.....so now I have more immediate concerns than Timberman

Keep up the good work guys...hammer that bike!  June is the month of biking!...for me anyway

Jay - wow - that's a cool surprise...."here's 5 hours hard labor honey, go get em!!"Laughing

Good luck with the training and have fun out there, I'm sure you'll kill it with the work you've put in!

Jay...I'm excited for you to be doing the IM 70.3...go get it.

Brownie...fast as heck TT and it sounds like you had something left to give. Shazam!

Simon...Fast as heck man! Great showing at Lavaman.

Looks like some BTers are indeed puttin' the lumber to the competition.

Keep it up!

I still got two months? For some reason, i feel like i'm ahead of schedule then.

Had good 3 hr hilly ride Saturday, then a 90 minute trail run Sunday. One of the best runs I've had in a long time...and it was in the midday heat between the World Cup games. (Jockey Hollow for you NJ people)

hey all, sounds like things are progressing well ... that's great.

i've got to get some longer bikes in, seems to be tough to fit in w summer travel baseball and family stuff.  had a good week last week w 4 rides so pleased about that.  have not swam in a while but not too worried about that as we have a few mos remaining.

walt where does the jockey hollow trail start? ive been wanting to try a trail run sometime ... the black flies in the great swamp are getting bad ....

jackie there's a picture of us chatting before the lavaman race on the js tri club site, check it out...

It sounds like everyone is getting in some great training sessions. Walt--interested in the Jockey Hollow trails--Where does the trail start and how's the terrain? I am just getting started with running after almost being recovered from an injury and this past week I have been running the HS track. I'm extremely bored with the track so some trail running would be perfect.

Hey Denise, Walt is the expert and I'm sure he'll chime in soon with some expertise, but in the meantime you can just take Route 202 from Bernardsville to Tempe Wicke Rd and park in the lot near the main entrance and follow one of these trails: http://www.nps.gov/morr/planyourvisit/upload/TTrail_Guides_10_03_02-2.pdf

Or, if you prefer, you can enter off of Route 24 and park near Sunrise Lake.  Greenbrook racing uses this part of the trail as their run for the Revolutionary Tri:  http://greenbrookracing.com/revomap.html

Personally, I'm a toe-dragger, so trail-running is a major threat to my dental work!  I like to get into Jockey Hollow early in AM.  They don't open to vehicular traffic until 8AM, and until then I get 8 miles of car-free pavement.  Devine.

Ha! I'm the expert on the Jockey Hollow trails???? I did this once before many years ago with a group so I just followed them then. The other day I just winged it and hoped for the best.

But actually it wasn't bad - there are "You are here" signs/maps posted along the route. A few are a little confusing and required me to stop and think. Halfway thru, I realized there are little white squares on the trees to mark the trail. I was too busy looking down.

Some of the terrain gets steep. Alot of it is rocky - not just a smooth dirt trail. but that was the beauty of it...I didn't worry one bit about what pace I was keeping. Even the steep inclines where I walked some, I was still huffing and puffing, so it's decent workout without killing yourself.

Like I said, one of the best "runs" I've had in a long time, and I've been full of issues this year. I parked in the lot off of Tempe Wick, then if you head to the Wick House, and make a right, that will take you to the outer trail. I'll probably run it again at least one more time.

This trail sounds awesome, I pass Tempe Wick rd on the bike all the time so maybe a bike/trail run brick is in order soon!

I had a great bike ride last nite in the swamp, one of those rides where your legs feel fresh, the hills look mild, etc.  I recall seeing 20-21 MPH on the same areas where in the beginning of the spring I saw 17-18 MPH.  Woot!  Took about 10 mins off my previous best for the same loop.

I've been taking a TRX training class @ my gym for several weeks, I think it has helped with leg strength and such ... plus I've been riding more often.  I still need to get more long rides in, but still feel improved with 4 90 min rides per week.

Is anyone gonna be in the Lake Winn. area for the long weekend?  I'll be up there this whole weekend and plan on doing the following:
Saturday - 4 hr. ride (easy effort, 18-20mph the whole way), followed by a half hour run.
Sunday - 70 minute run, easy pace (8:30-9:15 for me) with some fartleks worked in every mile.
Monday - nice easy swim, no distance/time requirement; and a super easy recovery ride for about an hour (15-17 mph).

Looks like it's gonna be a beautiful weekend, if anyone's interested in joining for any of it let me know!

Ray

I'm actually tempted to go up and preview the course 2 weeks prior to the race. My only free weekend till then. I will be going to Ironman Lake Placid to volunteer and get in some great training and get incredibly inspired. (debate in my head right now on whether i want to sign up for 2011 - not sure I'm at a point of being willing to make the commitment just yet.)

Great ride this morning. Actually chilly!! 90 minutes in and around the Swamp.

Does anyone know of any pro's that will be racing Timberman?

Andy Potts is returning. Doesn't look like Chrissie Wellington will be back according to this:

Wallly,
I am planning to be out riding the course on Aug 7-8, so let me know if you decide to go for it.  That goes for the rest of the group here as well.  I am also planning to be out there in a couple of weeksm (July 24-25) if anybody is interested.

Hi Mike,

I'm actually gonna be up there both weekends--if not both then definitely the 24th-25th.  I have pretty race-specific target workouts planned those weekends but maybe we can hook up at some point.

Also, as a side note: for those of you who have done this race / ridden this route, is it arrowed at all?  As pathetic as it sounds I'm TERRIBLE with directions so even the 4-5 turns on this course will most likely give me trouble...it'd be a huge comfort to know there are painted arrows I can blindly follow.

What's the run course like?  Is it on the road or grass (or both).  I've been getting over some knee issues and hoping the road isn't too cambered...10 miles is about my limit right now.

All pavement, except for the start, turn for lap #2 and finish which is grassy, which accounts to about 0.05% of the entire run.

Looks like things are continuing to heat up. I motivated by the great efforts being posted here.

I'm envious of those of you who will be treading the Timberman course as well. I won't see it until we're in NH in August. Well...except for on youtube.

I had a strong Time Trial on Monday 24.8 mph for 15 miles and a solid run yesterday 4.6 mi (ave. 5:50).
I'm gearing up for the July 17th Del Sol Triathlon in my town which is a .5mi swim/18.5mi bike/ 4.5 mi run. Generally some pretty solid talen shows up. I'm shooting for a top 10-15 overall finish...we'll see.

Keep it up!
Peace,
~Sam

Might be too late...but I'm riding tomorrow early early - hope to get out there 6:30ish and head thru the Swamp to the hills of Far Hills / Gladstone / Mendham. I'll check online tomorrow before I go if you get this in time and want to meet up.

As for the pre-race training weekend - looks like Aug 7-8 has some interest. I'm gonna pencil it in in my calendar. I doubt it's like Lake Placid where any given weekend, you can see a ton of triathletes training on the course, but does anyone know if it's not uncommon to see people triaining there as T-man gets close?

Usually every weekend there are riders out there. If it weren't for Timberman, I wouldn't be out riding on certain sections of that course.....its uh......kinda boring @ times alone.

ok, doing a little research on the bike course....the hill at mile 10 seems to be quite the little bump. 8% grade if my very unscientific calculations are right???? .5mi with 210' elev gain.

Yikes. Think I better get my butt on some steeper hills.

The rest of the course apparently has some fast sections.

(NJ crew: FWIW, Meyersville Circle up to Hickory Tavern is about 5.6% grade)
