Expert 1128 Boston | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED I just joined a tri club dreamfar and will be working with the coaches one on one or in small groups .I don't know if that fits your bill as far as coaching goes. I haven't really started to work with them yet so I can't critique them |

I made it much harder on myself by not being patient in the first place. I swear I could have recovered from open heart surgery easier than this! (not that I ever want to find out) I think I've finally got all of the infection taken care of so hopefully I can start back up mid-week. Does anyone know what is considered an "open wound" for the pool? If it is scabbed over, does that count? Sorry to be gross, I'm just curious. Glad to hear that your alive and kickin'! |

Veteran 320 Orange, CT | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED My best guess at a diagnosis of my hip problem from internet searches is that i have Bursitis of the hip. Which would mean taking a rest from running, downing anti-inflammatories, icing and massaging. I'm going to try a spin class tonight if i can get in off the wait list and see how it goes. Last time i had this problem the bike didn't seem to bother it. I'm kinda bummed, because i was really hoping to work on my running. At this point i think it's the weakest of the three disciplines from me. |

My leg still aches me, i am suspecting that my shin splints are there. I haven't increased running much but it feels like I am headed down that road. I am still trying to get something in everyday though. Gland to see everyone is pushing through. Thanks for all the inspires, they really help get you motivated. Everyone have a great rest of the week. Do you ever think the snow will quit!!!! |

Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Good Wednesday morning everyone. I am working from home today because of the impending storm, so I have a little extra time. How is everyone doing? I feel guilty when I don't get to check in with everyone as much as I would like. But I know you guys do just fine without me. Seems like the injury bug is spreading around the group. It's too early in the season (for those of us in the Western Hemisphere) to be getting injured. This includes myself. I was going to get on the trainer last night but I had a sharp pain about my knee. Knee problems worry me. Knock on wood, but I have been lucky over the past 2+ years to have no knee problems. I think we just need to listen to our bodies. Don't over do it. Ice anything that hurts, take some anti-inflamatory drugs, as prescribed, and rest. I know I get accused a lot of acting like a father or protective husband, but I just want my friends to stay healthy and train smart. Okay, preaching over. Everyone is doing great on the IM Challenge. People are knocking off more and more legs of the challenge everyday. Keep it up. Enjoy the day and snow if you are on the east coast. |

I don't work with a coach. It may sound cheesy, but I get everything I need from this site and the other members. There are a lot of coaches on this site who are "wicked smaat" and are very willing and eager to answer questions. Maybe someday I will be a point that I think I need a one to one training schedule, but I am good now. That being said, there are lots of folks around here (Boston) that use a coach. We have one that's in the area that I believe is very good. His name is Jorge. I think he is on the Boston Tri Team and he is out a Walden a lot. KathyG knows a lot about coaches. She has done a lot research. I know the MAV has been researching coaches. Post on the MA forum, these guys will get back to you, and if they don't, let me know, I will kick them in the butt. |

Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Not that this is a competition, but I just noticed that out of the 68 mentors groups, we are the 5th most active. That is something to be proud of. These things sometimes fizzle out, but this is a testament to you guys. Good job. |

Veteran 280 Glens Falls | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Hello All--yes, I am still on vaction in Culebra but for some strange reason I just can't stay away from the group. Haven't had the time to post my work outs but am keeping them written in my Tri Journal. Being away from home over this period of time has been a great boost to my training-especailly since it has been snowing a ton back home. With the temps around 85 to 90 everyday we manage to get out and run very early in the morning--have found it quite relaxing to do open water swims in the ocean but did get quite a scare yesterday--was swimming along as suddenly ran into something is what I thought was deep water!! Since I am a Northerner I instantly thought SHARK! turned out to be a high ridge of coral--maybe I should stay to the pool with my floaties on! Am also very happy to report that I am dodging the injury bug and better yet seeing how I am the old man of the group I feel like I am only getting stronger everyday. Perhaps I should talk my wife into staying longer down here as it's been wonderful to our health and work outs. Anyway, I just wanted to pop in and say hello to everyone--all those who are healing up--continue! And the rest, keep up with those training logs! |

Subject: RE: Vacation in Culebra Over the past few months, i have returned to the Jeff Galloway training method for running. The Galloway method is a run/walk program and for the over 50 crowd no more running than every other day. Even on race day, Galloway recommends that you take a one minute walk break every mile. He claims his method can actually improve speed but that the most important benefit is it minimizes injuries. I have used the Galloway method to train for 2 half marathons and have improved my PR and stayed more or less injury free. The other thing that has really made a difference for me is a pair of MBT shoes - the anti shoe. I wear these shoes off and on throughout the week, but especially after long runs and if i am going to be on my feet all day at work. I was very skeptical at first but they work for me. I did use a personal coach a couple of times when i was really lacking motivation. Initially they boosted my training but after a while i resented the amount i was paying them. Meeting with a coach became one more stressful event in a day of lots of professional and personal obligations. For the present, i am much preferring the motivation and camarderie provided by our mentoring group. thanks everyone. happy training! |

Expert 1128 Boston | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED TIGF everyone! Its taken me the better part of the week to recuperate from my 40 mile ride last weekend but I am glad that I did it. Now I know what I can do. Just another piece to the Serenity puzzle. Out of that weekend, I have scheduled a bike fitting and an appointment with the team nutritionist. Usually I go hiking on the weekends to change things up a bit but I think I will stick close to home this weekend and run/bike at the site of my first race in April and get a massage instead. I hope everyone has a great weekend! |

Expert 819 In the Shadow of the Big House | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Hey everybody, Got another longish run in today. Plan calls for 13 miles (2 hours) tomorrow too. May bail on that since I got invited to go cross country skiing. Counts as good cross training, right? Anyway, First tri of the season is in three weeks and I only remember what my bike looks like because our little challenge forced me to go downstairs and get on it. I'm so not ready. Good thing it is an indoor so it will be a very short bike ride. What was I thinking that an April Marathon was a good idea? Hope everyone has a great weekend and happy Valentine's Day |

Making good use of the snow today. got in some good cross training. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED It has been sort of slow around here. Probably because our resident talker is on vacation. I have been in a sort of funk this week. I hurt my knee, which sucks. I won't be able to do my half marathon in a couple of weeks. No running for 10 days. I can bike next week. I will be swimming everyday. Oh well, nothing torn in the knee, just some irritation. I am looking forward to the warmer weather. I will be out riding at 45-50 degrees. Although we went out on a big group ride last year and it was like 38 out. So maybe sooner if people are up to it. Everyone watching the Olympics? |

Veteran 280 Glens Falls | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Have to rest from beach life once in a while--so spend a few moments back at the house lounging by the pool--lifes tough on vacation--sorry just rubbing it in a bit. Can't stand to stay away from the site to long--besides I hear you all need a jump start once in a while (from the resident talker--haha) I could really get use to this island life--getting up early in the morning to run before it gets to hot, then off for some beach time and some really exciting open ocean swimming-close to shore of course. Then after the day cools off I am trying to swim about 20 laps or so in the pool. I am jealous of the members who live close to the ocean--makes for some really nice swimming. And toss in a run on the beach bare-footing it!!! !Nice daily work out--the only thing I am missing is my bike and life would be complete. Oh well, just want to stop in and say hello to everyone-keep up those work outs, stay healthy and for you that are feeling the aches and pains--heal fast. The season is approaching faster than we think. |
