Affordable is the issue there.

I know 2 people who have used Assurant and it costs $600 a month for a single person and close to $800 a month for a guy I work with to have has family on it. Totally wrong IMHO, but I don't get to set the prices.

not that im suprised by those dollar amounts, but holy crapoly.


the upside for me, well, theres a few upsides.

i have no pre-exsisting condition/chronic issue that im dealing with.

and im super healthy.  other than athletes foot issue i had awhile back, i havent been to the doctor for anything major/minor for like forever.

though.... you never know as you age....im definately going to carry health insurance....just dont want to be paying out the yang.

Oh you absolutely can't go without it.

After I got thrown from the horse I spent almost $12,000 out of my pocket, and that's WITH insurance picking up most of it. Between surgery, hospital stay, x-rays, all the follow-up appts, an MRI, PT and all that good stuff it really added up. Without insurance I'd be living in a cardboard box somewhere.

Ann ????? ?????n?o?t to hijack ?t?h?e? health insurance discussion, but I've meant to ask you  before what type of riding you do.  Just hanging out with horses on the farm? ??????????????????????????  I grew up with ???h?o?r?s???e?s but never came back to???? ?r?i?d?i?n?g after college.  I competed in eventing and also foxhunted.  Mostly, I just loved hanging out ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????in the barn and throwing a halter ?o?n? ?s?o?m?e?o?n?e? ??(??J?a?s?o?n? ?w?a?s? ?m?y? ?b?i?g? ?g?u?y???)? ?a?n?d? ?g?o?i?n?g? ?f?o?r? ?a? ?s?t?r?o?l?l? ?i?n? ?t?h?e? ?w?o?o?d?s.

Stacie, unfortunately no recommendations on insurance companies but agree with Ann.  You've got to have it!  Look at them very closely.  Like most things, the devil is in the details and the cheapest is not always what you need.  At the same time, you may not need a cadillac plan.  You have to make that decision. I am covered through a plan at work and that's very helpful, but even they're getting more expensive.  My monthly contribution was up quite a bit vs last year and all co-pays are up. Last year my co-pays for PT were $5.  This year they are $25 per session.  Thankfully, that's all I've needed other than routine stuff.  I don't expect it to get any more affordable anytime soon, but there are plenty of threads in CoJ having quite the debate on healthcare reform.  Interesting times.

Stacie, no help here either on insurance just to echo. You gotta have it and it is expensive. Mine is through work as well. My self employed friends best bet was to go to an independent insurance agent and shop with them for their specific needs.

I'll echo Robin, Kim, and Ann. The most important thing is that you know what's in the plan. Those things are written to be confusing for a reason - to confuse you. If you have a friend who works in that field then definitely consult them. Otherwise find an agent you trust like Robin said and go over what you need.

On a side note, will this plan be just for you or your kids as well?

I'll get my Nuke buddy down the hall working on that.

the plan will be just for me.  the kids will be covered under their dad's plan.

fortunately (i believe this is a state law) my husband (even if he wanted to, which he wouldnt...) cant drop me from his health insurance until the divorce is finalized.

theres no such thing as a legal seperation in the state of PA. youre either married or divorced.

and until were divorced, which could take awhile, not because its contested just because the courts are so slow, it will be a good 1-2 years before i'll be uninsured.

that said, i need about 5 years before i feel comfortable enough to go back to work full time and not require some sort of childcare for the boys, for the summer months.


though.  thats the beauty of the position at the school....i'll be on their schedule.  FINGERS AND TOES CROSSED.



but im not gonna wait until i HAVE TO do something before i have something lined up for myself.....that includes having a paycheck that covers ALL my living expenses minus the mortgage.

tricky waters to traverse, but no trickier than a doing a 1/2 IM right???  ive got what it takes.....

i made a choice before because i was afraid that i didnt have what it took to support myself financially.  not gonna make that choice a 2nd time.  nope.  not ever.
