My kids know I hibernate during tour coverage First day was krazy !! Dogs, end of race pile-ups. I watched the almost all of the Giro de Italia last month. Very exciting if you can keep up with what's going on day to day. DVR's are great for that. Hope everyone on the East Coast of the US is surviving this NASTY heat wave we're having ! Stay Cool |

Stay Cool Wish I could say I am surviving. I so need a day or two for my body to reset. I have been working on the hedges at work all week. On Tuesday I felt great, but I have declined each day since. I wish I could just hide for a day at work, but oh well. Stay safe in this weather guys, it is nasty out here. |

Veteran 280 Glens Falls | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Hey all, yes I am still around but not getting much computor time. Race season is in full swing and am spending most of my time training. It seems that I have a bit of a competition going on with one of my sons who also races. 2 weeks ago he beat me for the first time!! Although we are in major different age groups (23yrs---57yrs) we still watch each others times in comparision. Next race is a little over a week away 7/18 so am turning up the training-my turn to dust the son!! |

Stay Cool I would like to agree it is very difficult training conditions outside. I have retreated a couple times this week to the indoors. My long run this week got cut back a little and turned into Walk/run for the last couple miles jsut to get home. I think its good conditioning for the summer season but taking more recovery to get back the next day. Drink,Drink,Drink |

Regular 93 Billerica | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Got the Official but unfortunate Unoffcial times today. Let me explain. Water temp was 80' so USAT rules state no wetsuit allowed. They allowed you to race and get times but no official rank/awards to you. No big deal had no interest in them anyway. More to that later. Took the bullet and raced with for several reasons, 1. Have not practiced swimming without my wetsuit. 2. Certainly not trying it out on race day. Oh well. Race report is done if any one would like to critique? I have thick skin so fire away, constructive critisim is good. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=216807 Back to the no interest in awards and I still don't, just for SH*ts and giggles I looked though the results of my should have been division (M35-39). If the water temp was one, YES 1, degree cooler or just simply raced without the wetsuit, I would have had 3rd place. SH*t Dang Gamit. For what it is worth, my time when I pulled out of the race at T2 was still not good enough to put me on the podium. BTW, WTF, I age up to the 40-45 AG and the 35-39 AG is within my reach for a podium. |

Thanks T Hey T, I did a lot of high intensity interval training on the trainer over the winter and saw good results. I do believe you can adapt for an outside workout. One of the BT'ers is a coach who always offers up these workouts every winter for free... his way of giving back to the community. Here is the link to the archives: http://jorgepbmcoaching.blogspot.com/ over on the right scroll until you see blog archives - the 14 week plan starts Nov 2009 and goes thru March of 2010 While its not drills, it will make you faster! |

Veteran 235 eastleigh | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Hi Serin & Josh, thanks for your links, i will do some reading. I think i will get a trainer in winter but fear mrs T will not be happy when our carpet begins to smell like my gym kit !! Question for everyone, what bike do you ride, a to race and bg to train ? I am looking for my 1sdt tri bike and its a minefield, bike shops can only tell me about what they stock so its hard to compare, I am thinking a felt b16, B12 or B2 depending on how far i can flex the interest free credit card, would be useful to hear what everyone is riding. I could then throw out some questions to appropriate bike owners about your cherished posessions. Currently by roadie is a Carerra Virago Carbon, my 1st road bike so nothing to compare it too and bought it as it was the best deal for a full carbon ultegra spec bike. Will keep it for training but now going long and commiting to 2011 and beyond its time to have a new toy ! Thanks guys and gals T |

If thats the case then you might not watn to take Josh's advice...LOL I have a variety of bike shorts with the pads ranging from thick to thin (like tri-suits) and then I wear l some sort of top - Maybe a sports bra - non cotton - or any other top of lycra top. Or you could wear your bathing suit underneath and have bike shorts ready to go at transition. Have a great race tomorrow! |

Extreme Veteran 603 Glasgow, UK | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Under my we suit I wear a tri suit but depending on how body concious I am I slip a thin T shirt with my number pinned on when I get to T1 to hide some of the lumps and bumps. I am blessed with a large chest so there's no way that I couldn't get away with wearing a good sports bra under the trisuit. I may need to change the suit next time. The legs are really short on my and last week one of them rubbed a whole in my thigh which is still not mended So I'd be really interested in any reccomendations anyone can make for a tri suit with longer legs? |

Congratulations on your race! As for the swimming where did you start in the wave?? ie: front of pack, middle, back, sides. I'm not the most confident swimmer but I just line up on the side to the rear of the swim wave. That way I am a little out of the way of all the beatings that are likely to occur. Just take it easy for the first 100 yds and let the swimwave sort itself out, the fast swimmers will be gone and the rest of us can have a go at it. Thats my two cents |

From there it is about getting through the water cleanly. The thing I see most people doing is dropping the legs a bunch. For that try to push your chest down when swimming as if there is a ball trying to push up under your chest. Swimming in a wetsuit helps this if you can use a wetsuit, but being flat in the water is huge. It is relatively natural to lay on top of the water when you are on your back. The trick is to convert that neutral position when face down. FWIW, pick up a Total Immersion book or video. I got a bunch of tips from there |
