kstater39 - 2012-04-13 3:18 PM Well we all may die! I don't see broth on the run aide station list.

Yeah this concerned me a bit too....

kstater39 - 2012-04-15 7:43 PM Who is wearing an aero helment? What temperature will you guys drop the aero helment for the standard road?

I was considering rocking my Louis Garneau Rocket Air, but having to put in more workouts than I wanted on my road bike and fixie means I haven't really been training with the aero helmet, and the few 100 mile rides I've done, my neck was killing me from the position.  I'll probably bring both, but end up bailing on the Rocket and just rock the Pneumo instead.

This may have been asked before, but how many of you guys are planning on booties? I was thinking of going without, but am waffling. Water temp here is mid 60 s, which is fine, but a few degrees can make a big difference.

According to the guide below 65 degrees is the threshold for legal use of booties.  Skull cap  and ear plugs are the first advice others  have given me

I wore them in CdA last year (mid 50s water) and I'm not sure they help.  For one, they leak at some point unless REALLY tight.  It felt like I was dragging water filled socks the whole time.  The SG water is alreay in the 60s so I wil just sport a neo cap if legal.

Im planning on wearing booties, manily because my feet are very sensitive and I like how I dont have to deal with washing sand off my feet after taking them off.

Weather channel calls for April 22, 2012 high temp of 95 degrees. Yeah I'm more scared of that than the water temps. I did practice swims at CDA with and without neo hat and booties. My booties were super tight and worked great. The neo hat was a drastic difference. May not either if temps get above 60.

I'm definitely more worried about the heat than the water. The weather has been so cold here this winter/spring I've had zero chance to acclimate. The closest I've been able to do is set up a space heater next to the trainer in the garage and sit in the sauna at the gym.

Yeah, the heat is ON here in the southwest. 90's today, 100's by the end of the week here in Phoenix. I raced this weekend at the Marquee Olympic and swam in Tempe Town Lake. It was 65 and PERFECT. Felt great. St. George will be getting warmer and the water temps will slowly continue to rise. I wouldn't be surprised to see 65+ come May 5th. As far as race day heat, I have two weeks of extreme heat to acclimate. Should be good to go.

65 degrees would be like bath water for me since I ows in the San Francisco bay year round and in winter is usually around 50. I've never used booties, never plan to. I plan to use a neo cap, earplugs and suit. if the air temp is hot during race week I will do some of my swims sans wetsuit-much to the horror of people around me.

One of my favorite memories of SG last year was swimming out to the red rocks and just basking in the warm desert sun on warm rock. Swoon!

Bib 1614, representing San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico!

I'm trying to be all Mr. Cool... but having flashes of nervousness lately.

Will be arriving into St George this weekend and "acclimating" for the 2 weeks up to race day.

Going to keep my eyes out for geeky tri types out on their race bikes and running zig-zags downtown.

I'm feeling a bit DONE with my road bike lately. Looking forward to riding some MTB when I roll into St G. Any other IMSG'ers want to do some MTB up above Hurricane in the next two weeks, lemme know. Friggen awesome riding around there.

Cool

Thanks everyone for the replies. I might grab a pair and try them out just in case. Would love it if the water was sixty something.

Now that right there has got to be proof that you can acclimate to cold water swimming! I doesnt look like you have much extra padding for warmth either. I have been 'trying' to toughen up to the cold but swimming in a lake without a wetsuit right now is going way above and beyond!

I did my last long ride and it was hot ( 96ish).  Chewed some gum whenever my throat starting going dry and it worked great ( half piece, just enough to produce some moisture)  First time doing that and I like it.

tick tock tick tock... )))))))))

Glad to hear the gum chewing worked since I've been thinking about that as I work on my packing list. Any recommendations, such as particular brands/flavors that work well (or those to avoid), are you carrying it wrapped or unwrapped, etc.? I was thinking some small pieces like Trident might work.

im doing the trident that comes in those pre packed foil things. this way when water gets all over they dont disolve. and i noticed a full piece was too much.

Laughingbut then i was thinking that chewing gum is using energy that my legs could be using thus lowering my wattage output by 1.21 jigawatts over the course of 112 miles and that slows me down by 14 seconds and than i wont KQ.  So im not going to anymoreLaughing

This is great. The best thing I put in my run special needs bag was gum... after having gu powerbars and perform all day, it was awesome!

Ridingsdc. Just wanted to say thanks. Many months ago I started a thread on IM bike shorts. You suggested Tri shorts under a mid weight bike short for the bike then strip off the bike shorts in T2 and go. Been riding this in all long rides and like it. Thanks man!

So true.  Last long run logged.  Last long ride tomorrow.  Woot.  Tick tock!!!!

Quick question: Shipping bike via Tribike Transport and should I wait until SG to install latex tubes?  Bike will be in transit from 4/26 to 5/3.

Utah folks or anybody who has traveled through the area - I'm looking for tips about what sights are a must-see and what are so-so.

My daughter and I are going to take a few days to see the sights after the race. Our basic plan is to go down to the Grand Canyon, then back up through Monument Valley and over to the Four Corners (she wants to stand on all four states), then up to Moab to check out Canyonlands and Arches national parks. Of those, are there particular things we should be sure to see or other parts that aren't worth stopping for? Anything else along that route or other side trips that are worth making?

Thanks! Brad
