Newtons1st - 2012-01-03 11:02 AM I broke down and got in on the Cervelo deal and got a new P2 yesterday. Looking forward to getting to ride on it. Was actually amazed on how much stiffer it felt as compaired to my current bike. Spent about an hour and got fitted so it is ready to go.

Shame on you! I am assuming you bought two, and are ready to give the other one to the taller member of this awesome training group...let me know if you need my address.

So jealous...enjoy your new ride.

elizabethk - 2012-01-03 9:57 AM Question:  I just got off the waitlist for a 20 mile trail run on January 21.  http://emilyberriochoa.com/Frozen50k/  Its supposed to be pretty brutal.  I didnt think that I'd get in so my most recent long run has only been 12 miles.  I was initially really excited about this run but am now scared.  Should I do it? What would you do?  I know that I can finish it just might suck.  And I dont want to get injured.  What should I do?  Bag it?  My A race is Boise 70.3 in June.
If you are decided to go for it (I wouldn't advice because you don't have the long runs in) then put a long run this weekend lilke say 18 miles and start cutting it back. By no means run longer than 14 after this weekend. The other thing you can do (in addition) is to do the race very slow from the moment the gun goes off.

Looking at your logs I think you clearly have the base and ability to gut it out, run 20 miles and get it done.  I checked out the race site - sounds like an epic race.    I did my first trail run last year pacing a friend for 16+ miles so I get that your pace will be a lot less and would include walking, etc.  But, given the elevation change (4500') and time of year I would say no on doing the race.  There are 2 aid stations on the run and it looks to mainly be runner supported.  With the 20 mile distance, high elevation and chance of inclement weather I think you are taking a large personal risk if you aren't comfortable running that distance and elevation change.  Have you considered doing the 10 mile race instead?  .

I did consider the 10 mile but it also has a waitlist.  The problem is that the day I went to signup, the paper carried an article about the race and it was sold out before I realized it.  I think that I'm going to pass on the race and try it next year.  There's another easier 20 mile trail run in April that I might do instead - where it wont be dark, freezing, possibly snowing, and it has less elevation gain.

Make sure that the April race doesn't interfere with Boise, it is a bit close, not a lot but it still needs consideration.

Remember that you will need to put a lot of bike for Boise, the course has three major climbs. Lots of swimming also, and it will be cold water as well.

I remembered everything I hate about winter running today. The temp was 18 F at home and 12 F at my turn around (Lake Huron does funny things to the weather). My run was slow, slippery and felt like the entire time I was running in sand. I do like the results I will get next Spring though.

Today I put a little 4 miler at lunch at MAF pace +5BPM, I'm feeling a bit weak since I'm dieting and my body still hasn't made the switch to fats for fuel. Typical stuff for the first two weeks... Oh Lord, I just noticed we are TWENTY in the challenge. Gabe watch out!

I have a quick question about the challenge: today I have been for a short run, and shortly will be going for a swim.  I understand that I only get one point for the day, but can I add the time for both sports to my total?  (I'll have done at least 30 min of each individual sport)

Yes. In fact, you don't need to do 1/2 hour of any one sport. Aggregate time engaged in swim, bike, or run of over 30 mins for that day earns you the point for that day.

Temps are going to drop to low 40s (wind chill in low 30s with winds in excess of 20 mph) for my bike ride tomorrow morning, and to low 30s for my swim (outdoor pool) wednesday morning....BRRRRR

Any advice from my cold friends up north? What do you wear for a bike ride?  Guess for most of you this will qualify as good weather, but I have NO cold gear, so planning to wear a light sweater or windbreaker with my usual shorts. Actually, more concerned with the winds than the temp, I think I will be practicing staying in my drops a lot. Its going to be a fun ride!

Samy, if its too cold for the Wed. swim, I would recommend replacing it with a bike ride or a run.  In Florida cold spells don't last too long and missing one swim won't affect you vs. the alternative of getting sick...

Went for a short run after work to test out my ankle.  I also decided to use it to try out the Maffetone HR thing.  I managed to keep it under 147 most of the time, with a couple of little spikes, one at the beginning and one when I hit a hill and wasn't concentrating!  So 30.33 run.  Ankle feels good, although not 100% so have to keep an eye on it.  Gentle running is a good plan for the moment.

Went swimming late on.  The amateur swimming club have a lot of the lanes in our pool in the evening, but they finish at 9pm, so Tuesday and Thursday we have an unofficial swim session for the club.  Tonight there were 9 of us spread over 3 lanes, which was nice.  Got to catch up with everyone and say happy new year.  The total set took 46min, but I don't think I'm allowed to include my rests so swimming time was 36.04.

Obviously my weight loss is going well...  However, my husband and I are starting our own little January challenge today.  We have to make dinner for the rest of the month (so no eating out or takeaways).  We're still allowed to cut corners if we want, but the food has to be prepared in our home.  We're starting today because that's when my husband went back to work.  He refused to "ruin" the last 2 days of his holiday with healthy eating...  See what I have to contend with? I feel your pain.  As I am trying to watch what I eat and I'm the only one who cooks in the house....  Scott asked for home made fried chicken the other night and eats a Snickers Ice cream bar or a piece of chocolate cake that out son baked.....  I baked a pc of the chicken and last night sauteed my fish while they had it fried.  I can't eat chocolate so it's easy to pass on that...  now I have plenty of veggies and protein to snack on when they enjoy the fun stuff!!!!

Ernesto-

I wanted to thank you for the two saddles you mentioned on here.  Although it was someone else that was questioning them I took the info.  Called my bike shop today and he recommended both the ISM and the John Cobb.  Because of my size he recommends that I go with the John Cobb Plus thinking that I may have some thigh rubbing issues with the ISM.  They don't carry it but they will put it on and fit my aero bars for free since I bought the bike there in August.

Now time to place my order!!!!

You're very welcome Jen, I actually tried many saddles before I chose those two. But also keep in mind that the saddle is probably the most rider specific part of the bike, everybody has different bottoms to put it nicely. Women's saddles should be ALL split design to be able to use the sitbones and not the soft tissue. At least that is what I hear from all the girls that I ride with and those girls put some serious miles in, they also swear by the "hoo-ha ride glide" chamois which is also very specific for girls. One day (please spare the laughs) I used it myself because I forgot my Butt'r chamois and I found it not greasy and refreshing. I guess I don't use it for the obvious reasons... Laughing

Gabe,

You should record your starting weight somewhere (or is that up some where on the thread?). Your log just has 160 for every day.

Today: 10 mile run along Mississippi. 1:36:24. Feeling extremely run down. Had a bout of insomnia last night (not uncommon for me. I wake at 3:30 and can't get back to sleep). Zombie today. Very icy. 55 miles running in last 6 days. My plan gives me Wednesday off. Will bike (on trainer) and maybe swim.

Laughing

Thanks Ernesto...  And as Scott and I've been on the trainer I kept telling him I needed a split saddle now.  I started off with his old one but then when I got my bike he took claim of it again.  It was a little long in the nose for me but it was split and broken in already!! Thanksfor the info on the Chamois.  I was going to ask what the ladies on here were using because I have finally discovered the need for comfort as the training has intensified!  Poor Scott has watched me twist, stand and squirm trying to get comfortable and I haven't really been on the hills here yet!.

John Cobb has an awesome return policy so I feel good starting there.  Read up on the ISM Adamo Road but it looks wider. but I like really like the angle and the large cut out.  Only a $10 difference in price too!

Everyone! The following is a simple method of keeping the January challenge list ordered.

1) Go up and copy the last list.

2) Paste into your post.

3) Update your line only. (Adding a day and updating the time.)

4) Cut your line only and find where it fits in the list for those who have exercised the same (new) number of days for you. Paste.

5) That's it. If everyone does this, the list is always ordered. IF YOU ARE FIRST TO REPORT FOR THE DAY (this means you Mitch), THEN YOU ARE AUTOMATICALLY IN THE LEAD.

Ernesto:

Would those two saddles (ISM or John Cobb) work even for road bikes without aerobars? Don't feel comfortable enough with my control of the bike to add aerobars just yet, and was wondering if the saddles are good for regular road bikes or are better for tri-bikes.
