I was trying to bail on my lunch time bike but forced myself to do it. Had a great ride. I have been doing the same one at lunch...record time today. just over 10 miles in aroun 29 minutes! Also moved to the KOM on Strava for a section! (of course there are only 3 people who have done the segment but ya gotta take the victories where you can) Also I am not buying anymore beer in June with the exception of my birthday. Gotta lose a few pounds. Off to MRI tonite at 9:30pm-10:30pm assuming they are on time...not likely. Will probably get home at midnight so a valid no run excuse tomorrow morning!(5:30am run) Nothing like a good ride to get you motivated for more training. Hope the MRI went well. |

Definitely have nerve damage but we need to find out why. No running or biking or anything that may cause pain in my bum or back. So I started P90X this week and did a mile with a pull buoy in the pool after my Dr appointment today. I maybe down but I ain't out! |

Extreme Veteran 1648 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open So, my husband put a bike roof rack on my car- and I nearly threw my back out trying to get my mountain bike on it. So, today I met with a personal trainer to help me with a strength program to keep me from getting hurt loading my bike. Is that sad? I have to say - I was really impressed with the trainer. Today we discussed the motions that I needed to be able to do and tried out some exercizes. Now he's writing up a program for me 2X a week based on what he learned today. I do two supervised sessions next week then I'm turned loose. So, my goal is to get stronger again. I can really feel that winging it doesn't work as well as I get older! I guess I might as well start mitigating it now. |

Volunteer somewhere anywhere. Learn something new, music, cooking, language, to shoot, about the history of your town or any place that interest you, explore, walk everywhere to see what you miss when you drive. Dance & sing. I could fill my days with mindless thoughts and wanderings; wondering and wandering. Oh build a piece of furniture. Ride a horse , learn to rope. Not all practical but if I had the time but couldn't travel these might be some things I would do. |

Expert 1058 Fallon, Nevada | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open Originally posted by mirthfuldragon Hey guys. Life's finally getting settled. Went with some family to Wisconsin Dells this weekend, and rode the Rev3 Half Course. Here's the Garmin log: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/326573469. The high lights: 64 miles, 4,354 feet of climbing, 2,336 calories, top speed of 38.5mph. I have never been more tired or beat in my life. That ride was the single hardest thing I have ever done. A couple of the hills defeated me, and the echo of cleats on pavement as I walked up them. I was in tears at the end of it. In my defense, Strava ranks the ride as having three Category 4 climbs and one Category 3 climb. Also, one wrong turn added about 9 miles to the ride. The descents are borderline insane. When I hit 38.5mph, I was riding the brakes, into a blind turn. At that point, the only thought in my head was "Into your hands I commit my spirit," because if there was an on-coming car that drifted out of its lane, that would have been it for me. Another note: running 54/36 chainrings and an 11-28 cassette was probably not a good choice for that kind of climb. It may be time to swap to a 11-34 to crawl up those hills. Another lesson learned: in rural Wisconsin, there are no conveince stores, so 48oz of fluids was probably not enough either. Overall, I am satisfied with the ride; it banished the notion of doing a half distance this year, but I still finished it (even if was an 11 on the effort scale, and probably beyond my safe limits). Even Ironman Wisconsin is only 2,900 feet of climbing in 112 miles. Edit: set personal records for distance (previous best: 44 miles) and climbing (previous best: 1,400 feet) by huge numbers. I was frightened as I read about that turn...38 seriously? Too crazy hope you do not become an adreline junkie! |

It felt so smooth just like running xc when I was young. It took 30-45 seconds off my moving pace. I'm changing all of this because I got some new kicks I haven't had a chance to go out on a run with them (used the old ones for Sundays run). All I have done is run at the stores treadmill for a few while getting my gait analysis done . Brooks PureCadence 2 are the bad boys and they are sweet. Running with a minimalist type shoe with a 3mm drop felt so good and natural. I tell ya it took me back to my youth and how I used to run. Run day is Wed so look for my note on how they are on the road. ETA: I can't spell so I had to fix it all. Nice! I have the Brooks Pure Cadences and love them. I do mix it up with my burlier Brooks shoes though- I think when you're transiting it's good to mix old and new for a while. Someone here gave me that great advice a few mentoring boards ago! Purchased my Brooks because they felt like heaven on my feet! |

Expert 1058 Fallon, Nevada | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open Originally posted by Qua17 I went to my doc today (he's a triathlete btw - which is awesome!), and he told me that I I have a sprained intercostal muscle in my back. So I didn't break anything, which is good. But it could take weeks to heal which is bad. He said that running wouldn't hurt it worse - but that it would exaccerbate it and take it longer to heal. With a 5K coming up - I'm not sure what I should do. If I run this weekend, it might take me longer to get back to exercising regularly and affect my race at the end of the month, which is an important race for me. On the other side of the coin is failing on my yearly goal to improve my time in all my events.... I guess it will be a game time decision but I think I will play it safe. I'm not at my best when I'm not working out - so I will probably play it safe. Skip the 5k, yeah I know easier said than done. Skipped a 5k just this past weekend which ssuuuuuckeed but worth healing . |

My hating the day is a little different, spent a weekend off in Seattle, good food and beer (Hales and McMenamins), and slept right through my morning swim this morning. It's going to be a long week. Was a good weekend in Seattle though. McMenamin's has a super sticky stout that use to be really coffee flavored, they've been working on it and it's now caramelly and gently sweet. Was a nice pint. The McMenamin sounds heavenly. |

My wife and I took a 3-month, 12,000-mile road trip the summer before I went back to grad school, long before we had kids. We figured it was the last time we'd get to do anything like that. Took a loop around the US, starting in Florida, up the East coast, across through the Great Lakes to the Pacific Northwest, down the West coast, through the desert Southwest and eventually back to Florida. We mostly camped in national parks (monuments, forests, lakeshores, seashores), occasionally got a cheap hotel room to get proper showers and dry out our gear. Lived off peanut butter sandwiches and rice and beans. The whole time, we kept saying to each other that some day we would do something like this with our kids. It is still one of the best memories of my life. If I had that kind of time off, that's what I'd do. Wouldn't have to think about it, I'd be packing the car now and making good on that dream. That sounds amazing! |

Just got back from 3 mile run. everything's all healed up, and I'm ready to do this. I had to post this here, so that I would be held accountable, and do it. In the last 3 seasons, this has been an excellent motivator for me. BDAS is where it's at. Father forgive for I have sinned. But since its confession time I too have gained 4 to 7 lbs , (depending on the time of day), that I cannot seem to shake. Penance? No beer for me just wine. |

No beer sounds a little like catholic guilt coming through! On that note, I had a chance to try a new flavor. Its the Alchemist by Widmer. They're staple is their Hefe, which is alright. The alchemist was a good hoppy ale that could transition when your not in the mood for a hoppy hoppy Ipa. Pretty good flavor. |

Veteran 706 Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open Hooked up with a local cycling club and tried out one of their group rides. Two important lessons learned: (1) bike problems don't fix themselves (didn't happen to me, thankfully, but the guy with two flats in 8 miles did not have a good ride today), and (2) don't let my ego write checks my quads can't cash. I was able to hang with the fast guys for about 12 miles, and then got dropped. I was able to link up with the slower group and still made it home alright. Between this group ride and masters, I got humbled pretty thoroughly today. |

Yesterday's time in the pool was my fourth time since beginning my training. For the first time I'm feeling fatigue and a little soreness in my lats. No shoulder pain! Hooray! I've been doing a lot of research on tri swimming. Tell me if I'm on the right track. My understanding of triathlon swimming is to emphasize upper body and limit leg use to a minimum to save for bike and run. Long reach, catch and pull with lots of body rotation. Am I understanding this right? I'm still a little confused on how much and when I should kick during the swim cycle. I'm still wearing myself out with my kick. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Have a great day everyone! |

Am I understanding this right? I'm still a little confused on how much and when I should kick during the swim cycle. I'm still wearing myself out with my kick. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Have a great day everyone! From my experience, don't worry about it, and you're getting ahead of yourself. You're just starting out (where I was 6 months ago), so the most important thing is just to get comfortable in the water - like "2,000 yards before breakfast" comfortable. From there, work on refining your stroke and building strength and endurance. As far as kicking, my kick sucks. Big time. Frog, flutter, dolphin - you name it, it sucks. But still train it, and still work it. Early on, until you have a good amount of endurance and strength, feel free to use a pull buoy - they are very helpful, and help you learn balance in the water. Quieting the leg muscles will also preserver oxygen until your body acclimates to the limited oxygen pattern of swimming. However, eventually you want to develop a good strong kick - Rule #1 - swim with swimmers, cycle with cyclists, run with runners. On race day, for a HIM or IM, in a wetsuit - my legs are there for balance. In the pool, at Masters, or in a training swim, bring on the kick. To put it into perspective,I like to think about how my first few runs and rides were - horrid form, poor cadence, etc., - I have no idea what was going on. Competency comes with time - set a nice goal and reward, like a new swimsuit or something at 30,000 yards - and earn it. To add more perspective - today I swam 2,700 yards - the others in my masters group probably swam 3,500 during that same time, and their kids (who practice at the same time) probably swam 5,000+. |
