Get better soon Eric!  A pacemaker....now that is scary!  Keep us posted.

My week has been good considering optic neuritis...a couple of days with limited sight.  (Why I am checking in on THURSDAY )  Seems lupus related as there was no sign of MS on my MRI.  I got an IV of corticosteroids...so my weight is skyrocketing yet AGAIN...but I've been able to workout since it's better at night.  Tonights training will be sidelined due to the fact that none of my dresses fit and I need something to wear to a friends wedding tomorrow

Ahhh yes, that was a highlight of the day, getting body marked by Trixie and Regimom at the same time!!!

You were one lucky guy Pete!  I've often had dreams of a moment like that!

What's on tap for the weekend gang?

I know Davewithnumbers is racing a 5k on Sunday, and Force is rockin' a half mary tomorrow. Force, is this your first half?

Anybody else signed up for an event or race?

Sunday is the Blessing of the Burro, the annual bike ride of the Tri Donkai to visit the a s s that inspired the whole Donkey Planet thing. We'll get together at jszat's house and ride 20 or so miles, then dine on burritos. All are welcome, more info HERE if you are curious or just happen to be in the area.

Have a great weekend y'all, and good luck Dave and Jeff!!!!

Race Sunday should be interesting between  the lungy goodness and the cruddy weather - ah well what's 30 minutes of discomfort in the pursuit of a good time?  Happy Friday ALL!

Nope, ran the Fox Cities half last Fall. I have a few more training miles under my belt, so I have some higher expectations....we'll see how it goes.

Looking forward to some fun with a few Donks in the $hatty weather, though (both Sat and Sun).

Rock it, Davewithnumbers....

Good luck on the race Dave!

Have a great Blessing of the Burro!  Pete, I may need some donkey gear to spread the message to Texas, though I'm not officially a donkey.  There's lots of burritos down here!  And good ones too!

Moving this weekend from corporate housing to my apartment.  I won't have internet access for about a week there so I may be a little behind in my posts!

I looking at getting a lesson or two from a swim coach.  I met another BTer down here and we can split the costs.  It will include videotaping above and below water.  Anyone else have any experience w/ that?

Spanglers, I'm going to end up sending you a big box of swag!

RE: swim coaching, just do it.  I hired a swim coach for one on one instruction last year and it was worth every penny.  He did video analysis, though it was just above water, and tailored my swim workouts with drills to address my weaknesses.  Really made a difference for me on race day.

Thanks dood. It was a "man-against nature" epic struggle today!

So you get all this swag, and I get $hit! What's with that? So a guy's gotta move out of state to get some Donkey gear, heh?

Monday checkin:

Great Donkey weekend, with the South Shore 1/2 mary on Saturday - sluggin' it out with Mother Nature - and "blessing of the burro" ride on Sunday.

The season has begun (at least for me)!

Yup yup.  Monday check in!

Force and Davewithnumbers both had great races!  Congrats guys!

I missed out on jockstrapping at the South Shore half mary because I had houseguests and other stuff going on Saturday, but I took a short and crappy run Saturday and had a blast at the Donkey gathering on Sunday.  Got to hang with Force there--the write up in his blog is spot on, and you have to check out the pictures in his album!  It was nice to get on the bike outside again and a blast to get together with 13 or so BT'ers.

Any exciting plans for this week?  Anybody racing next weekend?

Monday check in.  Moved into my apartment over the weekend.  In-laws drove in and donated some furniture.

Got myself a flat on Sunday.  I need to try to patch it up later.  Luckily I was just starting the 2nd of 2 loops I was planning and was only about 1.5 miles from where I started.  (note to self - remember the spare innertube).

Nice work Spanglers, get the flats out of the way on training rides so you don't have to deal with 'em on race day!  I carry two tubes and two CO2's on training rides, and patch tubes when I get home.  Make sure you use the patch kit with the bonding cement or whatever, the kind that chemically bonds the patch to the tube.  The sticky patch version isn't nearly as durable.

I think I only had three flats all last year, and they were all the rear tire on my road bike.  Maybe the tire is the issue, eh?

I've made the mistake (more than once) of not carefully checking the inside of the tire for the source of the flat - glass piece, metal, etc. Sometimes a piece of the debris that caused the flat in the first place is still lodged in the tread - new tube, same result. So check carefully!

Yah, I'll try to patch it up tonight.  Got back home from work later than I expected last night so I didn't do it.  Don't know why, not like I had anything else better to do.  First I guess I oughta actually BUY a spare tube.  I left them back in Cheeseland.  I brought everything else with me except the tubes!  Definitely good advice on wiping down the inside of the tube.  I found the culprit - looked like part of a Bud Light bottle - was pretty hard NOT to see it!

Great pics on the blessing of the burro ride!  My blood is already thinning out down here so that looked pretty cold to me.  Fun, but cold.

Only 18 days until the next race.  Hopefully I'll have all the flats out of the tire by then!  The tires are pretty worn though - may look at getting some new tires.  Any suggestions on a decent tire for someone on a budget (for a Giant OCR road bike)?

Oh - and the honor of my 500th post goes to "the treehouse" gang!

Just checking in after my lengthy absence.  Been playing catch up with life after my unplanned sidelining with the stomach flu.

Not feeling the least bit ready for my duo this Saturday but that's life I guess.  Did my last intense workout last night with spin class and will do a few easy ones tonight and tomorrow and then enjoy the rest until Saturday - maybe a walk on Friday just to keep the body loose.

Weather forecast looks good although not sure about the wind.  Decided based on my training rides that you are pretty much guaranteed the wind here in FL this close to the ocean so it's more a matter of degree - hoping for a mild degree .

welcome back!

Hey Dave, sorry for the delay in response...

Are you familiar with periodization?  Generally speaking, you have a few weeks of building volume, then a recovery week, lather, rinse, repeat.

Having races one a month will work out great.  You will want to develop or modify a training plan so that your races fall at the end of a recovery week, that way your body will be rested and will have "absorbed" the fitness gained from the prior build phase.  My training last year was a four week cycle, and I adjusted it to fit the B races in so some build phases may have been two weeks followed by a recovery, and some were four weeks followed by recovery.

I'm a visual guy, so here's a totally cave man diagram of what your volume should look like, with each letter representing a unit of time spend training that sport:

Week one of build phase:

ssbbrr

Week two:

sssbbbrrr

Week three:

ssssbbbbrrrr

Week four (recovery):

sbr RACE ON SUNDAY

Repeat with slightly higher volume than the previous cycle.

Does that make sense?

Thanks Peter - That helps.. just wondering if I should design my own plan or import one of the canned ones here. As you alluded to yesterday, it's good to have a focus for each training session.  I need to think about how much time I can really devote to training (prolly 5-7 hours)

Need to get to work....
