Wow, I thought I was doing pretty well, but you are inspiring me to clean up my diet a bit more.  I'm down 13.5 lbs since mid December, so happy with that, but it will take more tweaking now.  Maffetone book is on the way from Amazon.  Thanks so much for the tips and encouragment!

Carol,

you will be gladly surprised that there's no need for starvation (actually quite the opposite) when choosing the right foods. If it doesn't make it to your grocery cart it will not make it to your stomach. Therefore, having a good plan and getting some education will help you loose "bad weight" and gain the good one. Also, don't look at overall weight as your enemy, body composition is what really makes a difference.

Going into Ironman training I established a weight goal and it turned out impossible with all the training volume. What I did get is a wash on the overall number but a significant weight gain in muscle build. I look much leaner, however the weight remains... Nothing to worry about though.

Ernesto,

Help.

Still lots of stress about job.  I'm still training, but I feel like I don't have any direction.  Still a little tired, definitely stress related.

Could you please look at my log and tell me what I should do next?  Thanks.

You haven't done any intervals in a long time. If your energy level is good do some track, it will put you to sleep like a baby. Remember the 200X200???? That will relax you...

Start leaving the long stuff for the weekends, more swim is needed. Like I've always said the good swimmers are made, not born. Keep it short but effective when it comes to run and bike during the week. The workout should have a purpose and a method. Plan the week and shoot it over, I'll tell you if it's alright.

Are you working Friday?

I did intervals on a sandy horse track last Friday.  Not working Friday, yea!

Thinking about doing my first MAF test.  I can't keep my HR aerobic on the bike, so I'm guessing I need to do the MAF test walking/running on a flat course, maybe a high school track.  Is that right?

In about 6 more weeks, I'll be able to train any time of the day!

Well, my Garmin has been shutting off by itself lately, and isn't reliable enough to take out anymore.  So this has bummed me out pretty bad, i was addicted to it.  Anyways, ill guess ill have to return it or something, just that right now ive got so much going on, school, work,

Ernesto, if you have any spare time, considering that my CAPTEXTRI is coming up real soon, check out some of my posts and please let me know what you think I should do in these next few weeks before the race(s).

Yes, the track is the best place to do it. Conditions do not change, it's always flat and predictable. Make sure the warm up is SLOW and 15 minutes long.

Tyson,

You need to increase mileage in both run and bike, not so much on the swim part. You should try and do some longer stuff during the weekends, maybe up to 9 miles running and much longer rides. Keep in mind that when you lenghten your workouts your pace should be easier. During the week do some track intervals to train your fast twitch fibers.

Sorry about the Garmin, try to have it replaced.

Hi All!

Question for you Ernesto. I finally received my cadence accessory for my Garmin last week and yesterday was my first ride with it. I found it very difficult to maintain a cadence of 90 and keep my heart rate down. In the end, I didn't accomplish either. Is this something that comes with time and practice or do I save the 90 cadence for shorter faster rides and races? ( it was very windy yesterday and my heart rate has been a little high all week)

On a different note I am celebrating my first 1.6k continuos swim on yesterday. WhooHoo! 5 months ago I could barely swim 50 continuous!

Wow! that's quite an improvement on the swim endurance! About the ride, don't sweat it, aim for a higher cadence but work your way up to the 90s. It will not happen overnight, keep in mind that this is neuromuscular training, not strength training. Therefore, do not worry about your speed on the bike while you're doing it. On the other hand you have to do muscular tension as well, which is your normal cadence minus 15 but engaging all your leg muscles. Check my training log, on Monday I did both, thirty minutes each.

You're making big progress, stay consistent!

Congratulations on the swim breakthrough.  Thanks for motivating me to go out and swim tonight!  Also, thanks for asking that question about the bike.  I can't keep my heart rate in Maffetone's aerobic range on the bike at all.  I guess maybe if I tried a very flat course going about 6 MPH.

Hi all,

Quick update.  Job situation almost squared away.

Did my first MAF test today.  Can't wait to do the second one to see the improvement!  Tomorrow I start the Two Week Test.  Born to Run is ordered and on the way.

Mark, how are you doing down under?  I hope you're sleeping like a baby this week!

Jackie, I do sleep like a baby waking up  every few hours or so... Wink Doing fine, coping with the lack of longer workouts now, but the legs must rest I suppose. I really don't know what I'm doing, but everyone talks about this taper thing, so I follow... Better undertrained than overtrained. Will start packing tomorrow. Thursday morning (4am) we're off to Port Mac (6 hr drive if you don't stop) and the adventure will start. Can't wait!!!

Subject: Maffetone HR Question

Ernesto,

I decided to do an aerobic walk/run tonight.  A few months ago, I couldn't run at all without my HR going anaerobic.  Well, tonight I had to run more of the workout to keep my HR up.  At first I thought maybe the readings were incorrect.

Question:  Is it possible that on the second day of the Two Week Test, I am into a "higher fat-burning state" already and that explains why I could do more work at a lower heart rate?
