kirih - 2009-11-19 11:08 PM Drainer & Dread double whammy for me today. I'm really glad I have tomorrow off from running... i'm pooped. Trying to find that happy medium between feeling fatigued from not eating as much to lose weight while keeping the training consistent is difficult!

Hey anyone try mixing up bulk maltodextrin based hydration/nutrition bottles? I'm thinking about giving it a whirl w/ fruity teas as flavoring. It's supposed to be tons cheaper than buying brand-name mixes. Although i'm perfectly happy with gatorade and gu, they get boring after a while so i'm trying some new things out in prep for eventual transition to HIM training.

happy training all.

k

When you find that happy medium, let the rest of us know the formula.

As for the formula for the maltodextrin, etc.  Not a clue.  All I know is that maltodextrin is yet another code name for corn.  Since corn is subsidized by the federal government so that it can be sold for less than its true cost, I am not surprised that it is cheap.  Good luck with that.

Hey gang!  I survived but it wasn't pretty.  I'll put up my race report later.  The best part was doing it with my honey.  I know he could have went much faster but he stayed by my side!

I'm going to sign up for IMAZ tomorrow morning in person before work.  I figured that is the best way to make sure I get in.

Hey everyone!

Well, I tried my first "RPM" class Friday night and felt pretty good all weekend! It was a GREAT workout! My thighs were burning about 15 minutes into it! I didn't turn up the tension as much as I wanted because I was a little nervous about how well I'd hold up. So next time I'll try a little bit more.

This morning was my Cold Turkey 10K with the girls I run with. They did a training program but I just ran with them during the weeks leading up to my half marathon back in October then this past week after surgery. I was going to do my 1:1 intervals with some girls but realized they were way too fast for me and a few of us that haven't been able to run consistently decided to do 30:1 which worked out great. About 2 miles into it we figured we'd finish at about 1:45..a bit slower than I wanted but I was happy to finish. I didn't have my usual pre-race anxiety. Probably because I was with the whole group and knew that all of us are back-of-the-packers so that made me feel good.

There were a couple of short steep hills that really got my breathing labored but it was fine. Around mile 4 a couple of the girls started getting ahead of us so Michelle, an older woman with our group, and I stuck together. I was so thankful to have someone to chat with! We finished in 1:27!!! I was so excited! I couldn't believe I did it in under 1:30! Now I just need to work up my speed! There's another 10K put on my Clyde's restaurant in April that's supposed to have GREAT post-race food..it's put on by a restaurant so why not! It does feel great to be back in the saddle exercising again! I also found out that I have 16 personal training sessions left! So after the holiday I have to pick a new trainer and I think I might work out with the trainer once a week and see if they will give me a workout plan for the remainder of the week so that eventually I can do strength training on my own.

I also posted a photo with my race report of the girls in my running group!

I'll check in on everyone tomorrow from work!

I've been following IMAZ today on the Watching Thread.  I couldn't believe how much I got into it.  I mean, it was time to go out for my bike ride, but I couldn't leave until BryanCD came in and I don't even "know" him.  By the way, he came in third in his age group and snagged a Kona slot.  Anyway, watching it all day long has sort of brought home how long this day is.  Nevertheless, tomorrow morning I will sign up on line, as long as all the local Arizona people don't go and get all the slots before we out-of-towners can sign up.

I feel like I have had a break-through on the run.  Still hoping for break-throughs on the swim and bike.

Wow!  Whether spinning or running, you are tearing up the "course."  It says that even with being out of commission, you didn't lose your fitness,  Congrats.

Watched a bit of IMAZ as well. Very inspiring. Looks like a great course for a first IM! Weather looked fantastic too!

Good luck with the sign-up - and do tell more about running breakthrough?

I had another longest run ever today - 7.48 miles (this'll probably be a regular thing from here til the end of the plan ). My best mile was 1:02 faster than any mile I've ever run before - so i'm quite pleased with the progress that this half plan is delivering in terms of distance and speed. 8 weeks in and i've upped the longest mileage from 3.1 - 7.48 miles and decreased pace per mile by at least a minute.

This weekend i've been plagued with eat-see-itis... Super hungry all weekend and have given in to it a couple times - but don't think this has negatively impacted me so far.

Light run week ahead for me which means more swim swim swim. Dunno how the pool time is going to be re-jiggered by turkey day. We are going to have a super quiet epicurean thanksgiving in the house - not travelling, not doing family thing (since both live so far away). Don't think there will be gross overeating, but organic pumpkin pie will be made and devoured happily

Congrats on the successful riding and running races! Yay!

ciao

El Tour De Tucson - 66 miles of fun?

Yesterday was the El Tour De Tucson.  It was my very first bike race.  I had no idea what to expect.  The best part about it was that my husband rode with me and I had my two tri buddies with me.  Their were about 2000 people at the 66 mile start.  Their was also a 100 mile distance, an 80 mile distance and a 35 mile ride.  I was so impressed with the Tucson police officers.  They had traffic controlled all they way around the city.  I was more worried about the other riders then I was the vehicles!

We started out very strong.  We weaved in and out of bikers and had a good pace.  The weirdest part was that about 5 miles into the race we had to get off our bikes and walk them trough a wash.  The walk about about 3/4 to half a mile!  It was crazy.  I don't know how that factored into our times.  Oh well.  My tribuddies pulled away around mile 10 or 12.  They did great.

Ron and I were doing well and he even commented that he could tell how much stronger i was getting on the bike as we tackled several hills.  Unfortunately, I totally HIT THE WALL at around mile 44.  From 44-56 I was DONE!  My lady parts hurt and I was so tired.  It didn't help that we hit some rough roads during this time.

We ended up around 5:03.  It was much slower then I had hoped but I'm happy to say I completed a 66 mile ride.  This time includes a stop for Ron to put his chain back on, a stop to fix a break problem, a big water food stop at mile 30, and 3 Kate's got to get off this damn bike and stretch stops.  I think my mind started messing with me after my usual 40 mile distance.

Lessons Learned:

1.  I need more time in the saddle.  My one long ride a week isn't going to cut it for my HIM.
2.  I need a woman friendly bike seat and a new pair of bike shorts.
3.  I should really scope out the course and plan my nutrition stops before the race.
4.  I HAVE to do another bike race.  Love them.

Congrats Kate!
What did you eat/drink on the ride? Did you plan your nutrition? What saddle are you on now? What type of shorts? Did you monitor your cadence and HR? What do you think of Tucson?

I recently got an Adamo saddle and like it alot but haven't gone on any really long rides with it yet. I like zoot trifit shorts with light padding but if I was planning to go over 50 miles I'd go with a cycle short with a bit more padding like pearl izumi or desoto.

Kate - The first lesson you learned is that you are essentially strong at the 44-mile distance.  That's a pretty good starting point.  And you know you aren't yet at 66 miles, but you have time to get there.  Didn't you say that you were going to follow a BT HIM training plan or am I mixing you up with someone else?  Anyway, you don't have far to get to 56 miles and I am sure that steady and consistent biking will get you there.

Be careful about getting a girlie bike seat.  I have heard that those big, soft bike seats are really much more uncomfortable that those narrow, hard pointy ones.  Sounds counter-intuitive, I know.  Now, there are seats with cutouts and such that are supposed to alleviate a lot of pressure.  I know that when I haven't biked in a while, it takes a while to build up my "seat endurance."  Do you think maybe that just more time in the saddle would help all your parts adjust and adapt?

Good luck with the sign-up - and do tell more about running breakthrough?

I can't explain it.  I was doing all of my runs at a three-minute run and one-minute walk.  That was working OK for me and next month I was going to graduate to 4 and 1 and then in January 5 and 1, etc., etc.  Last Monday night I set out to do what essentially were hill repeats and that is not conducive to 3 and 1.  My plan was to go up each hilly side street off this one east-west street and then walk down and walk to the next street.  Well, I did the first one and went further up than expected and continued to run down and the ran to the next street and just never walked.  Some streets I got further up the hill than others, but I didn't walk until about 45 minutes into it - right about the time my legs said NO MORE HILLS.  I walked for a couple minutes and then just ran straight back home.  I was so jazzed about this because I hadn't run that far in a really long time.  I have had a couple more runs since then and have just done straight runs.  I might have to walk for a minute or so in the middle, but certainly haven't needed 3 and 1.  And the "break-through" came so suddenly and unexpectedly.

So, the moral of the story is run (or bike or swim) regularly, run consistently and one day you will have your break-through as well.

Not sure what form my break-throughs in swimming and biking will take - I just hope that I have them.

Good luck training this week everyone.

Eat - The race didn't start until 10:30 so I had a big breakfast before the ride.  During the race I had a banana and a clif bar and a gu.

Nutrition - the only thing I really planned was to put some gu and the clif bar in my shirt.  I also had a gatorade and a water in my bottles.  Not the smartest.

Saddle - I have a basic small hard black saddle.  I'm looking for something with a hole in the middle.  I don't mind the hard part and don't need a cushy big soft one.  Excuse me if I get descriptive but  . . . I feel like I've been rubbed raw after riding.  Only right in the middle too.  I thought it would be good to give it a try.  Maybe I'll tough it out for a while and see if I get a little tougher.

Shorts - I have a pair of $40.00 bike shorts from Performance Bikes.  I think they are just the store brand.  My BIL thinks I should upgrade to gel shorts.  Maybe I'll put it on my Christmas list.

Cadence or Heart Rate - No monitoring to both.  I don't really understand cadence and I haven't tried a HR monitor yet.

Tucson - Mmmm . . . let's just say I'm a Phoenix girl.  Tucson doesn't do it for me but I know a lot of people who like it.  We did drive by a cute neighborhood in Oro Valley.

I'm with you Leah.  I know if I get it together I can handle the 56 mile.  I trained well for 40 some miles but not more.  I am supposed to be doing the BT plan but I can't seem to get it together yet.  It is hard for me to work with a structured daily schedule.  It is easier to do what I can work into my day.  I'm done with the first two weeks of the 20 week plan and have come up short.  I am trouble shooting this week.

I just talked about the bike seat in my post to Lisa.  It isn't the hard part that bothers me.  It is the rubbing in the middle. More research is needed in this department too.

IRONMAN - My friend finished his race in 12:55.  Impressive.  I was watching online too.  It was fascinating.  I'm going to do more watching in a minute to see how these folks look.  This is going to be tough!

Kate - Thanks for being descriptive! I actually thought I must be sitting on my seat wrong or maybe it was my tri-suits but on 3 occasions; 2 of which were races, I ended up being really chafed and raw right in the middle. At Irongirl I think that was one of the factors why my run was so slow and long. Every time I thought I'd attempt to push myself I'd feel that chafing and say to myself "No thanks!" So if you do get a new seat let us know if that alleviates the problem!

I don't seem to have a problem with the bike seat on my Trek currently. When I had aero bars attached the bike mechanic at the store asked me if I liked my seat and I was like, "Yeah, guess so". He had me try another seat which was a bit wider in the booty section..not the thick cushy ones you find on some of the commuter bikes but a bit different. I couldn't get him to take it off fast enough! For some reason it was SO uncomfortable to me! No idea why either, so I'll be interested to see/hear what others say.

I saw my official time today for the 10K and was faster than I thought! I think I put in my race report 1:27 but found out I was 1:23!!! Just under a 14 min/mile! Considering I haven't been running and I did 30:1 intervals instead of my usual 1:1 I was quite impressed with myself if I do say so!! LOL

I think right now I'm just so happy to be back exercising and able to start up a routine that I feel better all around, if that makes any sense!

Also, apologies to Scott for the attention to lady parts details!! LOL

Bike stuff:
1) were you taking in enough calories - 200-300/hr?
2) Explore a saddle with the center part cut-away. They help. A lot.
3) Avoid gel shorts like the plague.
I bought a pair of gel shorts when training for alc. I wore them on a 50+ miler training ride. At first they were fantastic and cushy, but by mile 35 or so they became a pain in the butt - literally. When I got home I had bruises everywhere from the gel dimples. NOT PRETTY. And painful. Needless to say I threw those out, and have stuck with just chamois ever since.

Congrats on IMAZ! And the clock is ticking...

Love them.

I'm trying to post a photo of me in line.  We'll see if I can get it up.  I have such a hard time with photos!

[didn't work]  I'll try it on my blog later.

Happy Thanksgiving week ladies!  Wow - what a weekend for some of you.  the closest I got to training was running around to the stores and setting up the birthday party for my two year old( which went swimmingly well).

Kate - great job on the ride and congrats in getting into IMAZ

Leah - hopefully you have your slot at IMAZ also.

Kiri - good job on you "longest" run.  My PT just ok'd me to start running so I think mine has been to the corner and back so far.  I'll just watch your training log for inpiration.

Keely - great 10k - you obviously-underestimated yourself.  Now you are going to have to start thinking about even faster times.
