Attempted to put my daughter on skis...Nothing broken, but not pretty. I think I need a new hobby...Ah yes, time to train for tris again!! |

Extreme Veteran 310 | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED I am posting to make myself accountable. Doc says I am good to go on running and cycling, but not on the pool. It is amazing how I went from hardly being able to stand not working out, to comfortable with it, to perfectly happy being a couch potato all in two short weeks. So... I have to run before bed tonight, and need a good kick in the pants if I don't get it done! |

Expert 1128 Boston | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Had a great day yesterday checking out my first race route. Its a nice beginner off road duo. I rode the course 1st on the new mountain bike. I got lost a few times and ended up on the runner's route saying, "this ain't right!" Single track, very technical for a mtn bike and looking at a pretty good drop into the reservior! Had to back track several times, missed a nice short but steep hill...Ugh! Lots of snow and ice on the trail..back tire kept slipping. Went around the loop once then back to the car to transition for the run. This is a fun course! Wlecome back to the game, Alana! |

Veteran 280 Glens Falls | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED New respect was learned yesterday during a ocean swim. Although I believe nothing beats open ocean swimming for the true excitement-I along with my wife who was swimming with me learned to show the ocean some repect--got caught in a nasty Rip Tide. Made for some very interesting swimming for a while and also made for a good work-out Hahah-sure I can laugh now but-it tired me out pretty good, especially my wife who is not as good a swimmer as myself. Scared her BIG TIME--for a while I needed to do the ole one armed stroke while hanging onto her for some added assitance. Cool heads prevailed and I calmed her down and we swam along the shore line and made it back to the beach non the worst for wear. Am sure you who live on the ocean are use to this but remember I am from Up-State NY--rivers and lakes are our swimming playgrounds. |

Regular 71 Melbourne | Subject: Getting caught in rips Hey Dragonflyer, so glad it all worked out for the best! I know how scary being caught in a rip can be. My dad was a lifesaver, so we got alot of indoctrination as kids about how to look out for rips and what to do if caught- but if you're unfamiliar, it can be hard to "read the beach". Here are a couple of links that might be helpful - but I think everyone agrees that even old hands on the beach can sometimes miss the signs of a rip and get caught up. http://public.lifesaving.com.au/pdfs/factSheets/ripCurrents.pdf http://www.andreslade.com/OceanFit/Ocean_Swimming/Rip_currents Hope this helps! Cheers Maree |

Thanks. Have you seen how polluted some of those lakes are? I would take my chances in the ocean. |

Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Happy Wednesday. So how is everyone doing 6 weeks into the new year? We are a banged up bunch. Hopefully we will all recuperate over the next couple of weeks and finish strong over the last 2 months. For those of you who are not nursing injuries, how's the training going? I will be starting my 20 week HIM training program this week. I can't wait for the warm weather. I need to get out and ride on my bike, not on the spin bikes or stationary bikes. Have a good rest of the week. |

Expert 1128 Boston | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Way to go Dragonflyer for keeping a cool head! I swim at a beach that is full of rips and I was always taught to swim across the current as opposed to against it. Luckily I have never been caught in one...but no one has ever taught me how to look for them. Sometimes you just can't see the sandbars from the beach if they are underwater. Thank you Mareelouise for the links - very informative and I will be scouting for them this summer. |

We can swim in Boston Harbor to get used to the pollution. |

Regular 93 Billerica | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED It sounds like everybody is doing good. Sorry to the group for not posting so much but the last couple weeks have not been to good for working out for me. I hope to be back at it more this week as the kids go back to school from vacation. the weather was very good today thermometer said 53' when I took off for a run with my daughter leading the way on her bike. Always good to have my water girl with me for the run. She keeps me at a fast pace too. Hope every body has a good week of workouts |
