Did a time trial today in our swim.  Did a 4:48 min for 300 yrds.  That is a PR for me.

Hey congrats!!!  Good job.

I have actually not done a time trial since last August, I think I am almost afraid to do one, so I avoid it.

Howdy strangers. I'll probably spend some time reading up this weekend on what I've missed around here and backfilling the training log.

Anyway, did my first oly last weekend and it was awful. Race report tells it all. So, I'll be searching for a race late May/early June to do to get a more respectable time. For now, moving to a 4/4 run/swim only schedule to prepare for the Kenosha half. The past few weeks have just been very busy with big projects at work, training, and trying to get all the logistics for the race straightened out.

Hope all of you are doing well, and like I said, I'll read up on the thread later to see what I've missed.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. Good to hear you got back on the horse after the multiple issues in the race and were able to finish.

The group I train with does TT every month.  Not always fun, but informative.  Keeps you aware of your fitness level.

fungi32 - 2010-03-24 7:12 AM I have quite awhile til my half IM(September) but I really have no working knowledge of nutrition while racing. I have never even used a gel or anything other than water or a sports drink on any of my races. I planned on taking a gel about half way through the 1/2 marathon but was so slow they had all been taken. I would like to start trying some nutrition strategies on long bikes/bricks etc. to start planning my nutrition for Septembers race, any suggestions, strategies, articles etc. that could help would be appreciated.

You will find a lot of different guidelines and suggestions out there for nutrition strategies.  They will serve as a good starting point, but I think the most important thing is that you need to find out what works for you.  This means trying several different nutritional sources over the course of your training and determining what your body/stomach can handle.

A general rule for biking is to be taking in 200-300 calories an hour.  This can be any combination of sports drinks, energy bars, gels, or any other source of calories.  On the run it can become harder for you to take in calories.  It's harder to eat solid foods and most people rely on sports drinks and gels at this point.  Off the top of my head I would guess another 200 calories an hour is necessary.

For me I've figured out a pretty sound nutritional plan for the HIM distance.  My caloric intake on the bike is around 600 calories for a 2.5 hour ride, split between shot bloks and 48 oz of Gatorade Endurance.  I'll take 3 gels (~300 calories total) during the run and a little from sports drinks at aid stations if available.

Another tip is having some way on the bike to remind yourself to take in the calories.  You don't want to get halfway through the ride and say oh crap, I haven't taken anything in and try to make that up in the last.  You'll either come out underfueled or overstuffed for the run.

Welcome back, Mike.  Sounds like a tough course.  Way to stick it out though and finish!  Maybe a little flatter course for some redemption on your next one.

So did 60 miles, over 3 hours on the bike today . . . however, that was even the amazing part.  I did it with saddle sore!!!!  If it wasn't for vasoline, that bike ride would not have been possible.

Never had a saddle sore before, but I guess that is what I get for ramping up the mileage for the last few months.

I hope everyone else had a good workout week.  I am trying to get in my time now before work gets busy again in April.

Ouch.  I can identify with that too.  I use a combination of Chamois Butter and Body Glide.

Group, ran 5 miles today!!!  First time in I don't know how many year.  Other than the blister that formed under the blister on my arch, the run felt good.  I felt like I had a good "pretty" stride.

Gotta decide very soon where I do the olympic race in Knoxville or switch to the aquabike.  I am getting there with the mileage, but not as a brick. Race is May 9th.

Hope everyone had a good weekend!

Congrats on the 5 miler!  I really hope those blisters leave you alone soon.

As far as being ready for the olympic, I think with a couple of 6 and maybe a 7 mile run before then you could probably complete it.  It won't be easy, but you could get through it

very sorry I haven't been posting! Between the knee and the personal drama I went through this last week in a moderately enebriated stupor.

But, one can't mope around for long, so I'm going to try to get back in the pool either tonight or tomorrow, and possibly race a duathlon this weekend, if my knee will allow it. Thanks for the concern guys,

Ortho told me it was probably nothing... possibly some flared up tendonitis or maybe a small tear in a muscle, but that I would probably be fine by the end of the week.

Way to get back in there.  I find that getting back to exercise and training takes my mind off alot of things.  Allows me to just zone out.

So question for you since I am doing the Rev 3.  Any specifica details you can give on the course.  Swim temps?  Difficulty of bike course?  Run course?

The swim: Going to be Wetsuit legal I'm sure. Actual weather/temp guessing in TN is impossible... yesterday it was 40's, tomorrow it's going to be 70's. It's always like that.

Bike course will be rollers (in my opinion) can't think of any big climbs. Probably "lots" of rollers for people not accustomed to the area.

Run I'm not sure about, haven't really checked it out, probably much of the same as the bike though.

Sorry to hear all that.  Hopefully with a little more rest that knee will be ready to go

Thanks... I'm a really crappy patient I know. Duathlon this weekend and if my knee allows... I'll probably do it.

Great run.  Running is hard enough cardio without all the extra challenges.  Hope your blisters subside so you can get that training in.

I was talking with the person that made my orthotics and after several emails back and forth, I think we determined that the increase in mileage and MPH has caused a hot spot/blister area and that I need to toughen up my feet.

Hell, I am just glad I am running . . . blister pain in nothing compared to shin splint pain!!!

I hope the ride went well!  I remember the first time I rode with aerobars I hated them for the first ten miles.  It just takes a some time to get used to.  After that it was gravy. Now I hate when I have to ride my roadie because it doesn't have them.  That, and it's just an old piece of crap too
