We get passed by 2 litespeeds (about $4K each) on a flat stretch and I see them turn up a hill that I take to head home sometimes. Todd broke off to see his mom and I turned and told him I was going to catch them to make them look bad. It was a joke!!! I catch them about 1/2 way up the hill on my Iowa steel touring bike. I had my IPod on but I heard one of them saying something about my single up front. I stayed in front up the whole 2 mile hill but they passed me on the downhill - which was fine. So it is not always about the machine people. Bill, tsk! tsk! riding with the iPod on. Need to be keenly aware of those surroundings... we don't want our King of Posting to get hurt out on the road! Now I'm off my soapbox... well done! Guilty as charged. Just when riding solo out in the netherlands of the southern erie county area. I hear everything - i just wear them to keep the wind out of my ears - LOL I understand... when travelling at such a high rate of speed, the wind can be deafening! LOL! |

Leaving work at 1. My mom and M-I-L are watching the kids so my wife and I can head to the Jersey shore this afternoon. We'll pick up my race packet and then have a nice walk on the beach. I'll dip my toes into the frosty cold water to see what I'll be in for tomorrow (it's funny... 24 hours from right now it'll all be over). Then we're going out for a seafood dinner and we're staying in a dumpy, little motel (but it's clean) about 5 miles from the site of the tri. So not only to I get to race, but I get a little romantic date night out of it as well! What a perfect start to the holiday weekend! Have a great race and evening Bill. Don't wear yourself out if you know what I am talking about - LOL Remember what Mickey told Rocky... "WOMEN WEAKEN LEGS!" |

If you already have a plan, ignore me,. This works for me: Have a warm drink prior to the swim. Do some cardiovascular warm up before getting in the water. I like to swim the first 10 yards or so with my head up. Some people like ear plugs. I don't use them. Just stay calm and focus on each stroke until you acclimate. Good luck! Any advice is always well received. This is my 3rd year doing this race. First year, I didn't get in the water prior to the start of the race. Big mistake. Plus, it was my first OWS. I panicked. If a cayak or boat would have been nearby, I would have quit, but they were all tied up pulling other racers out of the water. I figured I had 2 options... 1) die, or 2) keep swimming. I chose the latter! Last year I got in the water for a few minutes prior and had a much better swim. I will definitely have the warm drink prior and do some cardio. I thought about ear plugs, but didn't get around to picking them up. Have a great weekend! |

Subject: RE: Men's May Challenge Thread Got in my ride yesterday...it was great because it wasn't as windy as normal, and I actually lost track of how far I was going. Ended up doing 31 miles...where I normally stop after 24. Going to the pool for the first time in a while that isn't a masters class. Going to try and do some 100yd intervals. FUN!!! |

Master 1887 Brentwood, CA | Subject: RE: Men's May Challenge Thread Public Service Announcement: wear sunblock at all times! Little story for you all. Few months ago, I went in for my normal six month dental appointment. Dentist does an oral exam during these visits. He noticed that I had a white spot on my lower lip and stressed the importance of getting this examined. So, after a couple of months of HMO run around, I get into the dermatologist today. He states most likely it is cancerous, but since the treatment is less invasive than the biopsy, he advised to just remove the area. He basically froze the area to remove the lesion. It was kind of painful, but better than the alternative. I'll have a fat lip for a few days. Scary. I'm too young for this crap! Just wanted to share so hopefully you guys can be proactive. |

Subject: RE: Men's May Challenge Thread Wow...that's really scary. I didn't know you could get skin cancer on your lip. I mean...are you supposed to put sunblock on your lip...or can skin cancer appear on your lip even though you are getting the UV rays from other parts of your face. Either way, glad you got it checked out and removed. |

Subject: RE: Men's May Challenge Thread Got my intervals in today. For some reason I thought I was going to be able to do 20x100's on 2 minutes. Heck, maybe I could have...but ended up doing 10x100's on 2:10. Then 10x50's on 1:00. They were tough, but I didn't feel like I was going to die...like you should when you do intervals right. All of my 100's were in the 1:34-1:39 range...so I got about 30-35 seconds rest...which was a little too much All of my 50's were between 0:45 and 0:47, so about 15 seconds rest...which again...was a little too much. I probably could have gone 5 seconds less rest on each...but that would have made the send off calculations really confusing. |

Master 1641 Seattle, California | Subject: RE: Men's May Challenge Thread Just finished off my goal for the month. I had a pretty ambitious run goal for myself and I'm happy I was able to see it through. I'm sitting at 171 / 170 km for the month with one more run to come on either Sunday or Monday. |

Master 1887 Brentwood, CA | Subject: RE: Men's May Challenge Thread Bill, nice race. Congrats on holding a 20 MPH pace on the bike! Ocean swims are tough and require a special skill set. Wind chop, currents, tides, and local topography all create special issues. Plus, finding landmarks to sight is much more difficult than in a lake. Considering you aren't able to practice ocean swims, I think you should be quite proud of the fact that you successfully completed the swim despite your time! Don't go to the dark side with duathlons! OWS is all about comfort. The more you do it, your confidence will rise! |
