shrevemaintenance - 2011-03-06 4:22 PM March 27th going to do Olympic Triathlon in a lake surrounded by foothills. Should be fun hope so..

Wow, that time is approaching fast.  I don't say that as a bad thing, it's just strange for me that everyone is gearing up for races right now.  The first one in my area is in June, so I am just beginning to really gear up while everyone else is at their peak.

Good Luck!

Most of my races are more than 2-3 hours drive from me. We make a weekend trip out of them. There are only 2 races in our area that I can wake up and drive to in the morning. My marathon is at the university of illinois. It's probably 3 hours from her. But Anne and I are going to visit friends for the weekend 30 minutes from there and they are racing too. You haveto be willing to travel for more race options sometimes.

I definitely know that I will have to travel in the future to try out some good races.  I'm not complaining about not racing for a while because the late summer races work into my schedule a lot better.  I'm a teacher, so when the summer hits I can train so much harder than I can now.  I will be training as hard as I can all spring, but I will really have the time to kick it into gear once the summer hits.

Actually my race is 2 hours from here.  There are a ton of races in my town.  Even hear there is a half Iron Man here at UCSB.  I am going to do another one in September that is 20 min from here.   Most of the races are in the Ocean.  The September one is.  I wanted to do a lake Tri before I attempted the ocean.  It's a little scary.

Dale, it's only warm 4 months out of the year in Chicago and probably pittsburg too! Lol there isn't enough time to have a bunch of races.

There are usually quite a few races within a few hours of most big cities. Sometimes they have their own websites and are harder to find. Active usually has quite a few of them. There are a couple of other sites to help find them including right here at BT! Look around and see if you can find an early one to fit your training schedule. If you head out this way let me know. I may be inclined to meet you. Michigan has some stuff and so does indianna. Maybe dust off the mtb and try an xterra!

I have a QOTD:

I am starting to lose a little motivation---this always happens to me this time of year when I am just ready for winter to be OVER. Reading books and watching movies about running/biking/swimming/triathlons usually helps reinvigorate me. Does anyone have any good recommendations?

I really enjoyed the documentary "What It Takes" which was about 4 Elite Triathletes and their journey to Kona for the Ironman World Championship. It was very inspirational!

I recently watched Spirit of the Marathon about the Chicago Marathon (follows 6 runners through their experience) and even better, Run for Your Life about Fred Lebow and the creation of the NYC Marathon. Both are on Netflix Instant Play!

Finally logged on cos I'm starting to feel MUCH better and figured I'd better update my logs and show my face again. This weekend was the first time I felt like I was finally ready to start training again and I'm still going to ease into it. You'll see I just did a variety of stuff but I worked out Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I'm pretty darn sore, but feeling better than I've felt in weeks. I also added the couple mentionable workouts that I did while in Mexico - mostly running based. But after Feb 13th I basically did nothing worth mentioning - I did get activity in: walking, snorkeling, surfing & a little wake-boarding, but no intentional workouts and then I got sick.

Today I'm going to do a very easy & short run and I plan on going back to my Masters' swim class tomorrow morning and just doing as much as I can. I doubt I'll get through the whole class as my endurance is shot, but I'm confident it will come back quickly now that I'm eating & sleeping better.

Another movie I found entertaining (I live for Netflix Instant Play and ya gotta dig to find the good stuff sometimes) is called Saint Ralph. It's a pretty odd coming of age story about a young boy who decides to run Boston because his mother is in a coma and he's convinced that a miracle will save her and that a kid winning boston would be a miracle. The first half of the movie is pretty weird, but once he starts training it actually gets quite good to the end.

Dale: MAJOR congrats on doing that race! Wow, it sounds tough but you did great. If there had been a bigger pool of racers I bet you would have placed higher.

Hey Henry, It's good to see you again.  And recovering.  That's great.  Yeah the race was HARD!  I don't feel bad about the placing at all.  I had been training pretty hard and had no notice whatsoever.  Plus, I didn't really know the right way to use the machines. Also, I outweighed the next guy by 40 pounds.  All in all, I feel I did really good.  I gave it my all.  If I get a chance to do it again, I know I will be a little bit faster.  I have given up on placing well in any of the races.  I am powerful but slow.  That's just how it is.  I am just glad to be doing this and will be so stoked when I finish the upcoming race.  Feels like so long I have been waiting.   Brian,  I guess that is another bonus of living where I do.  There is a race every month from March to September close by here.  That is only the Triathlons.  There are marathons and Centuries aplenty also.  I never even noticed this stuff going on until now.  The possiblilities are endless.  This is only my first year.  Next year will be more exciting.  Right now, I am just focused on March 27.  Meeting all of you and having this website has been a total blessing for me.  It has helped to keep me focused and motivated.  Glad I had the oportunity to meet all of you.

It is nice to be able to "talk" with people with similar goals.  I do not know any other people around here (other than my dear wife) who are training for tri's.

I attached my new aero bars last night and rode for a half hour on the trainer in aero position.  Wow, it is a big difference.  My upper body is quite sore after that.  I am happy that I bought them now so I can get a lot more time in them before my races.

Also, I saw a very cool local in this Sundays paper.  Of course, I read about it after the fact, but it was a 5k that is run completely underground in an abandoned mine shaft.  Apparently, it is only the second such race in the country.

Wait until you try those aero bars with the wind at your face.  That is where they make the biggest difference.  They add speed to the flats but it's when you are going into the wind that you will really feel it.  Funny thing you were saying about not knowing anyone else who trains.  There are probably a ton, we just don't know them.  Wouldn't have known any of you if it wasn't for this site.

Nice!! 30 minutes right off the bat in aero and your just a little soar, you know you have the right set up!

You guys need to start hooking up with some local groups. Look into some rides going out of local bike shops, gyms, or even some of the local forums here. Nothing pushes you more than being out there with other people. Especially, people faster than you!!!

Thanks! I'm slow too. Even when I was healthy and running regularly and doing P90X my comfortable yet challenging running pace was only around 11min miles. And that's why FINISHING my first race is my main goal.

Those machines sound crazy complicated! I think that would have overwhelmed me. A swimming machine? I can't even picture it! lol

I completely agree on the point of having other people to talk to who are challenging themselves in similar ways. I know quite a few people locally who run marathons on a regular basis (something I'm personally not that interested in - maybe a 1/2 someday...) but even those people when I mention just a sprint tri their eyes bug out and they look at me like *I'M* crazy!

This group rocks.

Count me in on that too!  I do not know anyone "real" who does tris.  I love coming here where other people understand me and know what I am talking about!  Thanks everyone!

Henry - Glad you are feeling better and getting back at it.  How did the masters swim go?

Dale - That sounds like a crazy fun race you did.  And you did great!  Way to go!

Brian (and anyone else who is knowledgeable!) - My husband and I are planning a trip to Chicago the week of Memorial Day.  Any suggestions on can't miss things??

Here is my QOTD:  One of my goals this month was to work on my nutrition.  I have been keeping track of my food and trying to stay around 50% carbs/30% protein/20% fat.  I find that my diet is seriously lacking in fat!  Does anybody have any suggestions for me?  I had been loosing a lot of weight and staying low fat.  I think now it is just a habit that I need to break somewhat.  Between fat free cooking spray, fat free cheese on my pizza, skim milk, low fat salad dressing, etc. it seems that I just don't eat enough fat!  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to increase my good fat intake during the day?  I can google for some suggestions, but thought maybe you all had some ideas.  Oh, and let me just say upfront that I do not like any type of nuts or nutbutters!  Yes, I am weird!  Thanks for any help!

Karen,

there is sooooooooooo much to do in Chicago!!!

If you like cultural stuff the museums here are second to none except the smithsonian IMO. The field museum, Museum of Science and INdustry, or Planetarium are all super cool!! Lincoln Park Zoo is great, and there's the Sears Tower and John Hancock Observatories that are cool. You gotta have Chicago Pizza so plan a stop to Gino's East. There are tons of places for pizza but that one is good and popular. Millenium Park is nice to catch an outdoor concert or walk to see "the bean" Also, if you're out and hungry stop at a Potbelly's. They are a local sandwich chain you won't want to miss.

If you're up for a run this would be cool!! http://chicago.metromix.com/events/recreation_event/fleet-feet-spor...

those are just a few things you wouldn't all get done even in one weekend!

QOTD: cook with Olive oil!! or maybe switch to whole organic milk, snack on cottage cheese and peaches. mmmmmmmmmmm

The swim machine was called the Vasa Ergometer.  It is like a treadmill for swimming.  Google Search Vasa Ergometer and you will get an idea of what it is.  Like a computrainer for swimming.

We do have a great tri club here, but I just haven't had the time to really check it out.  Also, they seem to be pretty quiet through the winter.

I put another hour on my bike with the aero bars, and I actually spent about 45 minutes in them.  Does anyone know a good article/video that shows how to fit them well.  They are are somewhat in the right place for me, but I know I need some continued adjustments.  It will be an ongoing project....

funny you ask- i think i have too many good fats in my diet! do you like olives? i could live on olive bars. what about avocados? you can do so many things with them- homemade gaucomole, avocado smoothies, avocado omelets, avocado on pizza, sandwiches, etc. those are two my favorite "good" fats.

mcommend - 2011-03-08 9:53 PM I put another hour on my bike with the aero bars, and I actually spent about 45 minutes in them.  Does anyone know a good article/video that shows how to fit them well.

How about this??

I think Jay might have used that one to order his bike. I've heard good things about it. Thanks Richard!

Michael, just keep in mind that fitting aero bars on a road bike isn't going to be perfect. Your most likely not going to be able to get that perfect fit. You won't be able to get the seat pushed forward enough to keep your hip angle open enough to breath right. Don't worry about this. You are still going to make a considerable difference getting into the aero position. A good start may be to set the seat in the forward most position, put the pads in a positon where your elbows are bent in a near 90 degree position, and move them back or forward slightly to a place where your hips will be open enough to breath effectively.

here's another article on slowtwitch about it : http://www.slowtwitch.com/mainheadings/techctr/bikefit.html
