There's an article in Triathlete magazine this month about bib shorts -- including reviews -- I looked for it on-line but can't track it down. I'll take the magazine to work today and post a PDF. You rock. Figured I needed something a little more substantial than my mid level tri shorts for a 180 mile ride in April. |

I just picked up my first pair of bib shorts yesterday - there's a Pearl Izumi outlet here in Dillon Colorado. Even at outlet prices I paid $66 for them. I won't have an opinion on them until early march. (BTW, for the Connecticut people and the rest of us "Yankees", there's a Pearl Izumi outlet in New Hampshire) Keep an eye on www.bonktown.com and www.nashbar.com both sites have decent deals and Nashbar will have customer reviews of their stuff. Have to catch bonktown when the bibs aren't some hideous color scheme. |

Have to catch bonktown when the bibs aren't some hideous color scheme. My running and biking gear is drifting over towards neon yellows, greens and oranges. I'm out early in the morning and I like fooling myself into thinking that I'm more visible with that stuff on. It drives me crazy how much winter running gear is black with small scoth-lite highlights. I'd switch running shoe brands if they made them with lights like the kids shoes. |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED I'm torn on the road bike. I know "fit" is so important. Trying to decide on the Specialized Allez at $1,200, which is what the dealer is pushing for, versus the Specialized Roubaix Comp. Per the dealer, both will fit me well. He's a big group rider and racer. From what he tells me, the Allez is stiffer, but made for racing and group rides etc. The Roubaix is built diff, allowing for a more comforting ride, and is carbon. I lose two pounds by going carbon. The Roubaix also has a much better wheel set (Mavic Aksium's). Yeah, an entry level wheel for Mavic, but way better than other options. I think it's a $250+ wheel set. The Roubaix has SRAM Rival components, including the brakes, not a generic brake which apparently a lot of bikes come with. (Other than high end bikes of course) Here's the kicker. The Roubaix is a 2010 leftover, retails for $2,700. I can pick it up for $2,100. Great deal right? I like the idea of it being more comfortable, but apparently the geometry is a little different. I can afford the $2,100. Plan is to build endurance with the bike, for my mountain bike races. That's my focus, but plan on doing 2 Sprint Tri's, and 1-2 short Xterra Tri's. Your thoughts? I'll post this in the main forum as well. Edited by rizer22 2011-01-21 3:51 PM |

(Other than high end bikes of course) Here's the kicker. The Roubaix is a 2010 leftover, retails for $2,700. I can pick it up for $2,100. Great deal right? It sounds like the geometry of the Roubaix includes a shallower seat angle and a shorter top tube, thus not stretching you out across the top of the bike. Also, the SRAM Rival is a good base component to build to Force or Red as you need to change components. If you have the budget for it, I'd always take carbon over aluminum because, in addition to being lighter, carbon absorbs a lot of minor rattles of road riding. Good luck and we demand pics! I stopped lifting heavy so that I could build cardio volume. In retrospect I should have found a balance. Good news is I know how to strengthen those areas. |

Carbon will be a more forgiving ride for the long haul over the Allez, and the more relaxed geometry will also help you stay fresh. That said, I have an Allez and you won't be disappointed in it, either. |

Does anyone have any recommendation for me. This will be more than double any distance I've ever done. doubling your distance will be very tough. if they are trained, regular riders, the ride will average 18-22 MPH. But talk to them first, let them know you are a beginner and are interested in riding, maybe there is an A ride and B ride (a big ride in my town has a A B and C ride with 50+ people on sundays), maybe their ride is a loop and you do one loop with them and then ride a bit more on your own, maybe there is a good cut off. My tri club does a 75-80 mile ride most saturdays beginning in the spring as alot of them do IMLP,but there are cut ins and cut offs to shorten the ride. jsut make sure you know what youa re getting into. you dont wan tto be 20 miles from home and totally shot and calling your spouse or buddy for a lift home, I've been there and done that, they always laugh at you. ALso, make sure you know how to change a flat and carry a couple extra tubes and CO2 cartridges. have fun! |

You may not be able to go the whole distance with them if it's really double what you normally ride so study the route so you know ways to get back if you fall off the back. That and all the requisite emergency type stuff like said before. I also like to put my DL, insurance info, cell phone, and some sort of payment method in a ziplock to put in my jersey pockets. |
