DirkP - 2011-01-22 6:33 PM I got my 9 miles in today despite the 0 degree wind chills.  The temps were a little better than yesterday and the winds were slightly calmer than yesterday too.  I had some bouts with ice to deal with but none of it was horrible.  They just slowed me down a bit in several locations.  There were a couple of spots that had me down to a near stop but I guess it's better than stopping.

I have a couple of pics that were post run that I think Melanie, Hamlet and J need to look at whrn you are crying the blues about being cold and nasty out for some of your runs.  No more whining from you warm weather people! LOL

Love the pics, that looks alot like home. It has warmed up here though it was 40 today, just to busy to go for a run today. I will go out tomorrow and get a run in.

The snow isn't all that bad to run in most of the time, it's the ice that is the one that gets you into trouble.  Wehad some ice move through last week and its under the snow in places.  That can be a real surprise if you're not ready for it.  The snow  does muffle sounds and does help make everything a little more peaceful and more enjoyable too.  The temps in the 20's and up aren't bad at all to run in, below that starts to get chilly and then add the wind chills and frigid is the word.

My trainer ride is coming up soon but I have a couple of other things to do first.  My shcedule for today is pretty tight, that's why I braved the cold early this morning to get my run over sooner than I would have liked.  The balaclava is the BOMB!  If it wasn't for that I would be cutting my outside runs very short.

Here is a pic from this moring's run.  I took it immediately after the run before I could start thawing out.  I could see the build up as it began and thought it would be a good pic but I knew it would melt fast after I stopped running.

Nice picture, I just finished my run and had a little frost build up. But I would have to say it was under half what you had built up.

I ran 4 miles this morning with hills, there are four hills in my neighborhood. Each climb is about 100 ft in elevation change. I did the 4 miles in 34 minutes, pretty good time considering the hills. It felt great to get off the dreadmill and do some real running, now I remember why I liked running.

Got in a 12 mile run today.  Longest run since my marathon a little over a month ago.  Felt pretty good.

tri808 - 2011-01-17 4:14 AM New goals for 1/17-23

Ride - 120+ miles
Run - 30ish miles
Swim - get at least one session in
Weight - again...lose something...161.2 to start the week
Other - bring home lunch at least twice this week.

Weight as of 1/24 is 158.  Some of which is likely due to the stomach issue I had last week, but I think part of it is due to my increased training volume.

Rode 115 miles, ran 32 miles, swam 3 times, lost weight, but didn't bring any home lunch last week.  Overall I did well though.

New goals for 1/24-1/30
Ride 90 miles
Run 30 miles
Swim 3x
Weight: There's a chance I may gain back some weight, since losing 3 pounds is not normal.  So just to stay under 159 would be nice...2 pounds in 2 weeks is good enough for me.

My run volume has come back up nicely since my marathon...doing almost all easy runs for 5 weeks.  So this week I'm going to back off the bike a smidge and start changing one of my runs to a tempo to get a little more quality in there.

My weekely goals:
Run 18-20 miles
Bike 3 x on the trainer (60-ish miles)
Swim 3 x (6500-7000 yards)

This will be another tough week for me.  I have 2 swim meets this week and a Friday band practice.  Swim will be over soon but my youngest daughter has decided to run track this year at HS so I will have that to work around as the school year progresses.  I am not complaining, at least not a lot, my girls will only be young once and I have missed a lot of them growing up already.  I don't want to miss any more.

This is my last week of my winter maintenance program.  Next week I will be starting my 16 week Olympic distance training and a 12 week half marathon training.
This weeks goals are to get in 2 strength training sessions, 2 20-30 minute runs, 2 bike trainer sessions about 40-45 miles and I only have time for 1 swim this week 2000 yards.

Last weeks goals:
Get all 6 workouts in.  Completed as Rx'd according to the plan
Swim 1 mile on my long swim.  Completed broke it into 4 sets with 1 minute rest.

This weeks goals:
Get all 6 workouts in.
Get weight under 180, currently about 180.5

Of course my "rest day" yesterday wasn't.  Slow day at work had my distance at over 36 miles my new longest for a single shift, old was 28.  Kept a 9mph average for the day wich is higher than usual due to stopping and slow rides through area looking for addresses etc.

still sick....
I just took a 5 hour nap. imagine that! courtesy of my ma.
I want to get well soon and if that means staying home with no training so be it.

I am wondering if I did too much too soon. my muscles held up fine and I have no injuries but there is almost no reason for me to be sick this time of year. sure it was cold but not too cold.
maybe overall body fatigue? which I doubt because I never felt to tired.

Rest up and drink lots of fluids.

When you train hard, your body needs energy to recover and that sometimes takes away from your imune system.

Very cute pic.  Kids can have a motivating affect for sure.  Enjoy the days while they are young, they are fleeting.

The past work week really kicked my a$$, hit the gym after work last night which I usually don't do but had gone out to watch the game sunday night when I got out of work so decided a 0500 wake up would have been a bad idea.  It was brutal, the extra miles over the weekend definitely showed and I had to cut out some leg routines.  Got my swim in but it was a struggle started cramping on my last 300 but stayed in the fight and pushed through.  Slept in today and plan to get my short swim and a short bike this afternoon.

On my 'recovery' weeks do I also lower intesity as well as duration or keep intensity up?

Mel for inspiration just imagine how awesome you will feel after completing your next race, I have/had no real intention of ever setting my eyes on an IM distance but at the same time when I'm pushing through a run just the thought of being able to say I am Ironman one day helps...

If possible, you still want to keep the intensity at the same level as your longer workouts.  You shouldn't feel the need to add intensity though to compensate for the shorter workouts.

My weight hovers between 183-185.  I lost 4 lbs on my 10 mile run yesterday.  This is fairly common for me on long workouts.  Is this okay or am I not drinking enough fluid?

4 pounds is not uncommon from my experience.  I think I lost the same during my 12 mile run on Sunday.  So long as you're not feeling thirsty, you should be fine.  Running longer distances will naturally dehydrate you if you run long enough.  That's why it's so important to hydrate before long runs.  Because it's nearly impossible to drink enough fluid while running to completely offset what your going to sweat out.
