Given races are generally run on pavement/concrete, should training also be done on those? My back prefers running on grass but I dont want to give my system a massive shock by training on grass then racing on concrete. I'd think if you hit the pavement once every two weeks or so to make sure you don't feel drastically different on a different surface you should be fine. |

Couldn’t find my Garmin, and it’s always by the computer. Finally find it on the floor, battery dead. Kids must have grabbed it. Do a quick 15 minute charge, get dressed, hop on bike. 1.5 miles into ride I notice I forgot my HEED (drink). Turn around, get home, and lose all motivation. Got up for no reason. (but, anyday you wake up is a good day, right?) Then……..get kids ready to go, get in car, battery is dead. Someone left my lights on, and it definitely wasn’t me. Had to call friend to jump start car. Of course, Cole missed the bus, so had to drop him off at school, and was late for work. Then I come in, and find out my assistant actually gave her two week notice to move away with the new boyfriend. HELLOOOO!!! She also took her last 4 days of vacation she had left this week. You put in your 2 weeks notice, then use your vacation time up??? I understand technically it’s her time to use, but morally, it’s wrong. At least use your time up, then give your notice. So I am heading home now to make up for the ride this morning, if I can find the energy. Sorry for venting. Crazy day today! |

Got a good swim in focusing on stroke. Was thinking of running, but rain and hail kinda discouraged it. Did get my painting finished that I am donating to a high powered charity auction. The one I had planned to donate sold last weekend for $500 which is always a treat. I have not invested in compression stuff, but I have been having a problem with my right calf so I bought some diabetic compression socks today. I have been wearing them as I have stood at my easel for four hours and they have seemed to help. Compression essentially helps push the blood from your extremities back to your heart (it tells the blood where to go). Being on your feet for several hours can be tough so the socks should help. I'm a total tool today and whereing my compression tights under my work pants. This block has way to much volume and intensity so I need to do everything possible to recover. |

I have to decide if i can run 12km or a half marathon. Running is easily the worst part of my training though i am definatly improving. I can now run 3km but im still slowing to catch my breath at times. I want to push myself but i know i also need to be realistic and build up to events. I need some honest opinions to put it all into perspective, would i be pushing too hard to sign up for the half marathon? Or should i set my goals a little more realistic and do the 12km run, perhaps pushing for a half marathon later in the year? Most of you seem to be very You have three months -- you can definately do the half marathon. You just need to get runnign consitently. Don't worry about pace just get out there and run (and make sure you start short and easy so you don't get injured). I believe Jeff has a good half marathon plan -- Jeff-y??? |

We have lots of them here in Illinois, especially for the early tris - same as indoor tris really. They usually set a number of laps to be completed (usually sprint only it is 8-10 laps or so) and time you, then you run out to transition outside and finish the race outside. You have to give an estimated time to finish those laps when registering so they know how to seed people in waves. Wetsuits are not allowed in these. For kids triathlons, they may snake the younger kids up and down the lanes til finish, then send them outside. My nephew has done this. To me it seems it would be difficult to go all out in a pool swim with tons of other people in the lane. What if you underestimated your ability? Would you be stopping and waiting to pass others all the time? It just looks so chaotic to me. Not that an OWS doesn't look chaotic to me, too I think I might get into an "altercation" in a pool swim. Probably better for me to stick to open water. |

Master 2538 Albuquerque | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED This was by far the most crowded swim I've done and it was tolerable. I bumped a few here and there, got kicked once or twice by a breast stroker in the next lane (ARGH!), and had to skip a wall completely that was clogged up by easily a dozen people sucking wind in by my lane and the next lane we were going to. I ended up scooting under the rope about 6-8 feet from the wall and swimming the other direction with no push off. It wasn't bad at all, really. Actually, the noise and excitement kept me going when I felt like stopping once or twice. Then again, I'm in no contention for real times or podiums so some of you might have a different view of it. Jay (RockTractor) was 6th overall in the swim with a time of 6:26 in the swim, so fairly speedy times aren't out of the question even with some clogged lanes. He came in 4th in our age group, btw, with an overall time of 1:00:15 |

I have really worked at it gradually and completed a 10K last Nov after starting the year not able to do a mile. Do not push too fast or you will hate it, but keep consistant and steady as you add distance. My work is putting a team together for the City to Surf comp in August. Master 2538 Albuquerque | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED So now I need to wrap my head around if I think I'm capable of completing an Olympic distance triathlon. There's no more sprints until the fall, but a few Olys coming up that I'm considering. The trouble is, they are all challenging courses in their own way. Or, I've been contemplating the Austin Tri in September. Looks like a great event and if I did it, I think I'd sign up through Livestrong and raise some $$ in the process. But it conflicts with me going back to the Hotter 'n Hell 100 in Wichita Falls the week prior (no way could I get enough time off that close together to do both...or have the money for 2 trips back to back like that). decisions, decisions... |

Thanks for the votes of confidence. I know the main limiter is my head (and the running portion). I'm not good at following plans on a day-to-day basis, mainly due to work scheduling. I was playing around with the customized plan feature though, and that might be my ticket. |

She was telling me how in her opinion Oly is the most painful distance out there. For the most part you know you can handle all the distances at a very high % of your top speeds individually and you tend to go at it more with a sprint mindset. Where as the iron distance races you pace yourself better, you put more thought into nutrition, etc. Made total sense to me. Thoughts? |

It is a sprint race, just twice as long and hurts 4 times as much, lol. Iron distance races are a weird breed, you have those who race them, and those who look to complete them, personally my "complete" is done. At this point of my Tri life, it is race and race hard, and if i blow up, so be it. I will have to work harder and get into better shape for the next one. Anyway you slice it, the best part of racing is the camaraderie that I get from all the people at the beginning and end of the race, you do not get that in other sports. The buzz, feel, adrenaline and all the other things, there is nothing in training that you will do that can replicate those sensationd. I do not care what distance you are racing, nothing replaces race morning. |

New Haven, CT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED If you can do a sprint you can do an oly. make sure you arew comfortable with the swim, you can always fake the rest. what i will say is that if you "race it", you are right around threshold so it hurt alot. But the race is long enough to enjoy racing and short enough to not really have to worry too much about nutrition, being out on the course forever, etc. |

So true. I'm over a sprint in hours. Took me two days to feel right after my Oly. The rush of race morning is really what hooked me. There is NOTHING like competition IMO. It's a rush I hadn't had since playing in the state playoffs in HS. Something I didn't know I was missing until it was back really. I was also raised in a family where losing was acceptable, and anything other than 1st was losing, but the moment you sat in the car the question came "What can you do to improve?" I'm still that way. I said a few pages back that Ricky Bobby quotes run through my head on race day. "If you're not first, you're last." Is one of those quotes. |
