Extreme Veteran 1700 Normal, Ill. | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED Good luck to you guys racing this weekend and next. I had a great fun brick today. Hill repeats on the CT for 90 mins and a 4 mile run with hill repeats. Yoga and stretching. I am having so much damn fun so far. 3 hours on the CT tomorrow. That won't be so much fun :/ Got to find a movie. Wish there was a group ride but we don't prepare for 45 degrees in January in Illinois.

Expert 1146 Chugiak, Alaska | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED Yeah taper - have fun this week and don't overdue it! Ken- sounds like a nice ride! It would be nice to get outside for a ride, but not with temps in the single digits as they have been for the last 2 weeks here! Oh yeah and about a foot of compacted snow everywhere (including sidewalks and streets). Though fat tire biking is becoming the new fad. |

Expert 1104 Canada | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED Happy Sunday everyone. It was lovely here is morning & unseasonably warm (37F, roads clear, no wind). Only those of us in Northern climates would say that is warm!!! Nevertheless, in January, it is warm here. But I digress... Was such a nice morning that i decided against spin & treadmill & decided to head for an outdoors run, first in 3 months, with my various injuries. Was planning 6-10k, depending on my leg. Anyway did 9.2k (almost 6 miles). Muscles ached (assuredly de-conditioning), HR high (road running is completely different from treadmill) & knee ached a bit (left medial femoral condyle area, hope this is not something starting ). Anyway made it & happy I did it. took an ibuprofen when I got home. Now to assess my hamstring today. It was not that troublesome, during the run. It is after, that seems to be more bothersome. This body is definitely not new. I am probably entering a new phase of my athletic career. "Managing injuries"...trying to keep this old car going!!!! Hope everyone else got a quality workout today... R |

Extreme Veteran 643 metro DC | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED jpbis26 - 2012-01-07 12:15 AM Hi everyone, just wanted to let you know I'm still here...long first week back from winter break. I was hoping to have a relaxing first week back and keep up with my running and add in 1-2 trainer rides, alas it was not in the cards. My 1st grader can home from school with head lice and immediately gave it to my 2 yr old Brushing out everyone's hair and treating the bedding/house was exhausting. Then my 4 yr old's babysitter (he goes to half day pre-K) told me she will be moving in a couple weeks (unexpected) and can no longer watch him after school. So now, I'm scrambling for a child care situation for him. On a good note, I am going running tomorrow morning with a friend, so hopefully last week was a fluke and next week with be more relaxing and productive training wise. Oooh, I'm so sorry... I have a friend with a daughter same age as mine - 13 - who's had to deal with head lice one or more times a year for years bc of a good friend whose mom can't be bothered to scour everything top to bottom. And then the sitter issues....oy! God luck with that. |

Have enjoyed skimming last 10 days' of posts...and happy to be back in the land of healthy & training. Life sure gets in the way sometimes, doesn't it?My #1 goal for 2012 was to try to maybe catch up on work & sleep enough to not feel guilty for leisure reading on BT to catch up with folks so goal #1 now accomplished! Also got back in the pool last night, which was the first anything in ...well, the longest stretch I've gone I think in a few years, including when I sprained my ankle this time last year. Love seeing the goals in the posts, and the diet talk makes me think about re-trying paleo, but tracking portions & recording what I eat this time to see if that makes a difference... only thing I've done that's kept me from feeling really hungry, but don't like the 30 pounds I've regained over the last 1-1.5 years. So that's my #2 goal, that and getting back in the training groove. Swam last night & felt great to be moving and in the pool - truly my favorite way to train. Might even try running tomorrow..., and looking forward to rejoining killer spin class on Sunday.Biggest training goal-wise, besides hoping some day not to hate running, is getting back to good, consistent strength training - my body just likes it, and I definitely need it. RE saddles, fwiw, I have the Adamo road saddle and love it - did a lot of research before buying it, and found a LBS that had a loaner I could try for a while first, but I knew as soon as I sat on the thing it'd be a huge improvement. Took me longer than I thought to break it in (not sure what I expected, but still took "longer" whatever that means), but well worth it. My last saddle was the Adamo road saddle. I really liked the idea of it and wanted it to work so badly but realized on my long rides leading up to IMAZ that it wasn't going to work. the width of the nose (well half nose) was just to wide and was effecting my nerves. I was getting pain shooting down my legs, etc. I know that they have a new saddle out that has a narrower nose so I might look into that at some point. That sounds really tough. Didn't realize they had a new one, too, but this one's probably good enough for me. Still like these models far more than the supposedly "WSD" of some of the others I've seen, esp by Terry. |

About 45 miles of riding. Looks like it is going to start off a little cool, 38 degrees or so but be in the 60's by the time we finish. Anyone else training or working out today? Looks like the weather is fairly nice across the country! Not too bad in Central Illinois - got in an EZ 9 mile run this morning. It felt good after being sick. DIE SINUS INFECTION DIE! You know I was rolling my eyes at the "EZ 9 mile run" - that's definitely still an oxymoron for me!! Still, really impressed that you can go that distance still not feeling 100%. But yes, DEATH and DESTRUCTION to all sinus crap. I am so looking forward to oral surgery Thursday to eradicate what's left of mine. |

Hope everyone else got a quality workout today... R Good for you to get it in! You have a nice collection of cold packs? Essential equipment for creaky middle-aged body parts. My PT's have been preaching daily ice, stretching, and foam roller, whether I run on a given day or not...say it takes at least 4 weeks of daily stretching to effect permanent change, and the daily ice is key for promoting healing on an ongoing basis. I'm not as good as using the roller as regularly, though, but it really does seem to help keep everything looser when I do... |

Master 1539 Sin City | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED Happy Sunday! While the weather has been nice here, however, the winds are relentless! It's not always one direction type of winds, it's like swirling. The winds today was a little too much for running (the place I go to for long runs, tend to have dust storms, and it can get really bad). So I resorted to the treadmill. (copied from my blog) AWESOME RUN!!! At first, I was dreading doing 55 minutes, so I bargained and decided to do 45 minutes. What did you know? After I finished the 45 minutes, I restarted the treadmill and did 10 minutes more because I was feeling great! I think I could have done 15 more minutes or so. Too much/too fast, so, I really had to hold myself back...that's the first in a LONG time!! Felt PERFECT throughout. The only little issue I had was a little rubbing of my second toe. My big toe is wrapped up with band aid because the toenail is going to fall off, but since the new nail has already grown, I rather let it fall off naturally than yanking it off. It looks so pretty...compared to all the yucky toenails I've seen online! I injured my toe in September after a bike ride...funny, I didn't feel it at all, nor did it hurt. I waited a bit, and about a few weeks ago, the blood under got cleaned out, and that's when I discovered that it has been lifted. Left it alone...a few days ago, it just flapped off. :-) Anyone interested in pictures?? LOL! I hope everyone else got a good training day/race like I did today!! |

That's a good goal for me to aim for someday I really have to play games with myself to get in any miles on the dreadmill...usually break it into 1 mile warm up & cool down, and all-out sprint/walk intervals in between to break up the tedium. |

Expert 1151 Las Vegas, NV | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED Good to hear that so many of you are having warmer weather for Jan and have been able to get outside. Fortunately, I'm able to cycle year round for the most part, but we like to pretend that it is freezing here (even though it only in the 50s). But DJ is right, the wind is what really gets you in Vegas. I was able to get out there today with a friend and do 22 miles on the bike. We hit a couple patches where we were going uphill with a wicked headwind, but for the most part it was a good ride. Glad to be out there again. I was also able to get in a short run/walk on Saturday. Hopefully this week will run more smoothly than last and I will be able to run & do some trainer sessions. Update: Thankfully, the lice have been taken care of. My husband decided it was best to give our boys military style hair cuts (which they're used to-this is how they wear their hair in the summer)- so we don't have to worry about their hair. I had our school nurse check out my 2 yr old daughter & got lice/nit free report. As for a sitter, I found a nearby daycare that would be able to pick my son up from Pre-K & keep him until I'm done with work (unfortunately it will cost twice as much as what I was paying)...so we'll see what happens, but at least I've found one option. |
