My last book was born to run great read, two other books you might appreciate 'who dares wins' by Gerry Duffy it talks about Gerry's story of off the couch to double iron man then completing 32 marathons in 32 days around the county's of Ireland truly amazing story. Gerry actually just won a deca ironman race competing in 10 iornmen in 10 days, don't know if that's amazing or just insane.

Ultramarathon man is the other, if you haven't read it I gained some great times and distances when readin these two books, just goes to show how much control the mind has

Third race of the season seen me tackling the Larne Half Marathon this morning, tough enough course, hot on the way out, and a good headwind to test me on the way back in.

My heart rate was over 170 at mile three so you can guess the fun I had climbing the hill of death, blew out at mile 10 and 11 and 12 lol, but managed a respectable enough finishing time 1:49:04, just didn't have it in me to push through the pain barrier today but a good event.

I learnt a valuable lesson today, never race your 6 year old daughter to the top of a steep embankment the day after a race.

My calf had been tight over the last couple of weeks and as I took off up the hill I felt a pop followed by excruciating pain, I believe I've torn my calf muscle which means no running for the next 2 - 3 months depending on the severity of the injury.

Not sure what this means for my season, will have to wait and see what the Physio says during the week.

Wow, that sucks Robbie.  Hopefully the Physio gives you some better news than what it sounds like you are already prepping yourself for.  Maybe it's just a bad strain or pull.  Take it easy until you see him and remember RICE.

Think your right Josh, the intensity of the pain has decreased by about 60% already so hopefully the physio tomorrow evening will provide a proper diagonsis of where I'm at.

There's still a lot I can do in the mean time, core, nutrition, upper body, and swimming. Will give it a few days rest in the mean time.

Feeling surprisingly optimistic one way or the other, I might loose a bit of speed but build up the core and come back stronger

QD, congrats on your purchase.  I hope the Fuji is good to you.

Josh, i enjoyed i'm here to win.  Macca is one of my favourite athletes.  I like atheletes that can "back-up" any talk they have...and he has a lot.

I read You are an Ironman, great book too.  Really gets your motivated.  Born to run is on my agenda too.  Also look at 17 Hours of Glory.  Quick stories/backgrounds on some famous ironman competitors.

Robbie...good luck on the recovery.

I had a good long training day yesterday.  We have had unbelievable weather recentrly so I took advantage of it.

I woke up at 5:30 am and ran for 1.5 hours.  I was able to do 14.5 kms...the longest single run i've EVER completed.

After some food and rest (and of course playing with my son), once he went down for a nap, i got a 1 hour and 15 minute ride in.  I don't have a GPS so i'm not entirely sure on the distance I covered.  I was tired but overall i felt good.  Great day!

Today i don't feel too bad.  But i'm going to only do some strength training and rest the legs.

Robbie - Sorry to hear about the injury.  Any chink in the armour sucks for sure.  Hopefully it will all just be a humorous story soon.

I went out on a bike ride yesterday with a friend of mine who will be doing a sprint triathlon with me in June.  He's been up in cold weather country lately so he spent alot of time on the trainer and yesterday was his first open road training session.  I think it was a bit of a shock for him.  I was hammering him pretty good, but it was also good for me because it helped me to be patient and to lay off the gas a little while riding.  He punctured at mile 18 and didn't have a spare tube and my wheels are bigger than his so I had to finish the last 4 miles solo, to get the jeep and go pick him up.

Driving back he said that riding open road was alot different than riding trainer.  I told him "yep on that trainer when you kick up the resistance once you've had enough you can dial the resistance back down, but out here on the road once you start a hill there isn't any dial to turn to make that hill flatten back out..."  We had a pretty good laugh about how suprised he was that I put him in the hurt locker so early.  All he needed to do was let me know, but his pride wouldn't let him call the dogs off.  Its okay though we're planning a long run together on Saturday where he'll more than likely do the same to me.

On another note I tipped scales this morning at 221.8, down 4.2 pounds over the last two weeks and just a little under 2 pounds from my original target weight.  So its a great start to the week.

13 weeks to my first tri of the season.

Main goal for this week is a 16-18 km run on the weekend.

Also getting my fitness back on the bike so various distances just to build a nice base.

Going to incorporate more strength training this week too since i've slacked on it for about 2 weeks.

Saturday.  My first race of the year, a 20K TT.  My goal is to shave off 23 seconds from last years time which would put me at 29:59.  I'd be real happy with sub 30 but we will see.

Goals are to just keep adding mileage onto my base during the run and bike, get back to the pool and start up my training there as well.  Start adding alot more core and strength training since I've shed so much of the fat layer its time to start carving out my muscles again.

Foggy

Yeah I'm going to enter it.  I asked about it on the Texas board and everyone had real good things to say about it.  A few of them also plan on running it.  I've got a training partner, the same one I put the hurt on yesterday, who is going to run it with me.  I've also almost got one more hooked into doing it as well.  So yeah thats my next race....13 weeks away.  Now I just have to find a place to swim?

We just had sport relief over here and one bit of inspiration I picked up yest evening was a comedian called John Bishop, he cycled from Paris to carlisle which took him 16.5 hrs as he was late on arrival he only got one hour sleep before he got into a canoe (with three other celebs) and rowed across the English channel which took 7hrs, he was a mess during but got through it, the following three days seen him run from dover to London running just over a marathon each day.

Absolute legend raising over 3 million for charity, it just goes to show what the body can do when the mind is focused.

I had thought about putting my HIM back till next year but not after watching the above, nothing is going to stop me from making that starting line in Sept.

Have to wait till tomorrow evening to see the physio for diagnoses of condition and rehab plan so I'll let ya know how it goes.

Well my training buddy and I took in a run this morning at 0500.  Just a quick 3.3 mile run but he set the pace and for me it put my needle into the yellow for sure.  We clipped along at 9:00/mile which is not my usual pace.  But thats good for me to push like that every now and then.

I've got another run coming up this afternoon during my girls soccer practice.  Trying to sucker someone else into the world of endurance sports.  Who knows maybe she'll like it.

Got out for a meager 3 mile ride on Sunday, but it was great and better than nothing! So far loving the Fuji and I'm looking forward to full on training starting on Sunday. My goal is to make time for a 10-mile ride this weekend to fully test everything out and make minor adjustments. Happy to say, though, that after just a few short rides I'm starting to get the knack of the brake lever style shifters!

The last few weeks have been a disaster, nutrition-wise, and my weight has gone back up, but things have been crazy hectic, plus Chris's grandma passed away. Our routine has been thrown completely off track and I'm confident I'll get back on track as my routine goes back to "normal". And on that note, does anyone else LOVE the fact that we consider training 6 days/week "normal"?! lol

It's great that your still able to push that in when your crunched.

We are having absolutely great weather conditions over here at the minute, not a cloud in the sky or a breath of air and the temp is sitting at 62 F. Trust me to be limbered up....

Here's a pic of me taking a dip after the half mara on Saturday, the water was freezing and really worked wonders.

FoggyGoggles - 2012-03-27 4:50 PM Two-a-days... I love 'em!

I'm getting "the bug" man.  I'm starting to love to see the results in the mirror, on the scale, in my training logs.  Its getting addictive.  Getting a training partner is great cause we text one another about what we've done so far and it helps motivate you on days when you're not feeling it.  I talked to a college buddy of mine in Dallas who is a multi-Ironman.  He's a great source of info for me as far as advice goes.  He has run every 140.6 in the States except Idaho, Texas, and the new one they have added in New York.  He knows my goal or reaching a 140.6 and has offered all sorts of encouragement and advice to get there.  I have him to thank for getting me interested in multisports.  I texted him last night asking "why he didn't tell me how addictive and expensive this sport could be", told him "it was like a drug".  He responded "nope its more like a cult...LOL"  The community of triathletes has to be one of the most supportive I've ever found.  Its amazing.

My biking is taking a back seat this week.  Normally I'd get a couple of rides in right after work during the week.  However, the wife is studying for a test all week so I've got to take care of kid extra-curricular activities this week.

Instead I'll just put alot of running into the books.  Probably better, its my weaker discipline, and as the old saying goes "bike for show and run for dough".  I'm also volunteering Saturday to work an aid station during a marathon for a local triathlon shop, its being done on my birthday so there giving me a $50.00 gift card.

It was baltic!!

That's great having that experience along side you to help with your training, its such a steep learning curve at the beginning.

Good News!!

Finally got up to see the physio this evening to check out my self diagnosis torn calf, luckily turns out I'm no sports therapist.

The pop was a spasm and the tear was a strain, hopped into the place and WALKED out.

Still a bit of work to do but I'll be fighting fit in no time, and another valuable lesson learnt, stay away from google when you get injured and head straight to the physio!!
