Erica - hitting the imaginary like button. Nice.

Matt- I am a novice swimmer, so take the following with that in mind. I saw your logs and meant to comment- you have been swimming a ton. Awesome. As has been pointed out to me, when I start getting tired, my form goes to crap. Bad things then ensue. Perhaps what might be going on is form related.

That was funny Carrie!

Michele - if you're working out you need to eat more than the 3 meals. You could incorporate the homemade lara bars into training. I have not made any yet, but did bring a store bought lara bar on my run today in case I needed something to eat.

And I'm still snacking if I get hungry. Usually almonds and a piece of fruit. I'm logging what I'm having along with my training here on BT. Just a quick jotting down of what I have for B, L, D & any snacks.

Thanks, everyone, for the TV show recommendations.  I have seen a few of them ("The Wire", in particular, is my all-time favorite TV show), but there are lots of good choices for me to pick from .

Question for the group, particularly the swim experts:  I've been swimming with the Masters group now for a few weeks and can really tell I'm benefiting from it.  My swim is getting smoother, my times are getting slightly faster, and I'm feeling better at work in the morning.  My wife has even commented that my spindly cyclist's upper body shows some signs of filling out a little bit.  Surprised

One minor downside, though, is that I seem to have a more-or-less constant crick in my neck/shoulder, as if I slept on it wrong.  It is on the right side - my primary breathing side.  I'm thinking of splurging on a massage, but beyond that, any easy stretches people can recommend to work this sort of thing out?

Massage!

The fact that you've developed a crick on your "primary breathing side" leads me to think that you are wrenching your head out of the water when you breath.  Two thoughts -- first when you breath, you should be rotating your body not your head and second your head should not come very far out of the water -- only one goggle should be out of the water.  The other thing to think about is bi-lateral breathing -- it helps you develop a balanced stroke and its useful because you may need to breath on you non-primary breathing side during a race.

trilooney - 2013-01-05 2:18 PM Hello all,I have been eating healthier than I have in a very long time since jan 1 and have not weighed myself. The feeling of not weighing self is awesome. Knowing I'm making healthy choices, I don't feel the need to weigh myself. Also, I feel like I have been eating significantly less than I ordinarily do, but yet I am feeling full all the time and I have no cravings to snack all day. This is unusual for me! I'm shocked and confident I can keep this up at least 30 days. My only worry is upcoming work events with lunch and dinner served. I'm thinking of bringing my own food. I will likely also go out to eat 1-2 times this month, which might get tricky. I need to start bringing my own dressing everywhere.I had a rest day today and am looking forward to a 5k tomorrow.. I will let you all know how I do.

Glad to hear you're doing so well.  Good luck tomorrow!!

Morning, all!  Run with hill repeats done this morning.  I'm going to do some core work later today.  I wanted to wrap it up after the run but felt absolutely ravenous, so I pushed off core until later today.  I coughed a lot last night and felt sleep deprived when I woke up.  Didn't seem to bother me on the run at all!

Got some blood work back that is consistent with Celiac disease.  Biopsy may confirm it later this month.  It's pretty interesting that I've been eating strict Paleo for 4 days and haven't had 1 single "attack" since.  I really do believe that things happen for a reason.

Glad that the Paleo is working for you Jen! When is your biopsy? Are you logging your food anywhere?

Is anyone who is doing Whole30 (or the like) logging food anywhere so I can see what you are all eating?

Biopsy is on the 29th.  I'm ready for some answers. I found out today that I'm iGA deficient, which is a positive marker for Celiac disease.  This is probably the reason I'm so tired all the time, as iGA deficiency is immune deficiency disorder.  I'm doing the Paleo more as a cleanse, and then I'm going to experiment with different foods after the month is over.

Today's food log:

9 a.m. (post hard run):  sweet potatoes, 2 eggs, spinach, and mushrooms cooked in coconut oil

11 a.m. - almond and raisin mix

1 p.m. - mixed greens with carrots, red pepper, tomatoes, avocado, leftover burger, and olive oil-vinegar dressing

3 p.m. - olives and homemade carrot-orange-ginger juice

6 p.m. - chicken, broc, and red pepper stir fried in coconut milk and curry powder

Kelly - Would like your legal opinion about what the hell is Lance Armstrong thinking. How could he even possibly consider acknowledging PED use so that he could do tri's again when there are several law suits that are still in play?

Jen & Scott - recipes please. I tried to make a coconut curry chicken squash dish last night, but winging it. It turned out ok, but not great. I just sprinkled in cumin, corriander, ginger, chili powder and cayenne. I think lemongrass is key???

I'm pretty much out of all protein in the house. Dinner is the last of the eggs, scrambled with collards and sweet potato. Not bad, but I need to hit the grocery store or farmers market tomorrow early.

Speaking of sweet potatos. I bought Japanese sweet potatos at the farmers market. Not a big fan of this type, they are very dry. What is a good variety?

He'll race MASSIVE legal issues if he admits to doping -- as you mentioned there are several suits currently pending against him.  He could enter into some type of universal settlement agreement but I can't see all the various parties agreeing to an agreement.  There is the possibility that LA has transferred all assets and is essentially judgment proof but I don't think that's likely either.  Or he could have a huge book deal that would essentially cover any judgments.

His attorneys have issued a statement saying that they don't have any knowledge of a potential "confession."  I think they may be stating the truth, however LA has shown great hubris, so anything is possible.

Thanks, Kelly and Chris.  All of this is good stuff for me to think about.  Chris, I also have the issue of form falling off when I'm tired, so I'll particularly give that some thought.  I'll get my Masters coach to keep an eye on me Monday morning to see if I have the other form issues Kelly mentioned.  At her suggestion, I have started breathing bilaterally on a regular basis, but it isn't totally natural on the left side yet.  I know that's important, though, so I'm going to keep at it.

I'm also happy because I now can tell my wife I have to get a massage - BT's orders! Wink

I get massages every other week -- deep tissue.  Its probably the most painful and most beneficial thing I do training wise.

With regard to form vs. endurance you may want to try a 200 / 800 swim test.

Warm up for about 200-400 yards.

1 x 200 ALL OUT (try to record the time for each 100 if possible)

3 minutes rest

1 x 800 ALL OUT (try to record the time for each 100 if possible)

Cool down for about 200-400 yards

If your pace for the 200 and 800 is similar it is likely not an endurance problem and is likely a form problem.  If the 200 pace is significantly faster than the 800 pace its likely an endurance problem and is is really significantly faster its likely an endurance and form issue. If you had video of you swimming I would be curious to see it.

I made Beverly's Larabar recipe. I couldn't stop thinking about them since she posted. They are yummy!!!

I combined 1 cup cashews, 1/2 cup sunflower, 1 cup unsweetened dried black cherries, and 12 dates. That makes them whole 30 compatible, right? How and when would you eat them since we aren't really allowed snacks?

Actually, it was me who posted the recipe Tongue out.  They are Whole30 compatible.  I usually eat one when I need a snack (not very often) or before a workout.  You just don't want to use them as a crutch if you have a sugar addiction.

I got in a 4 mile run this morning.  Having ran since the Dallas Metro PCS half I participated in Dec.9.  It was a great morning for a run, and it felt really good.  Not too cold.  Then this afternoon went on a bike ride.  Still trying out the new ride.  It is very different from my hybrid.  Not very confident on it yet but rode for an hour and 15 minutes.  It was a beautiful sunny afternoon!

Meal 1:  2 cups of coffee with coconut milk.  4 mile run.  Then 2 eggs, mushrooms, and spinach cooked in coconut oil.

Meal 2:  Canned salmon on a bed of spinach with avocado, yellow tomatoes, and homemade mayo.  Large sweet potato with salt.  Then 1 hr/15 min. bike ride.

Snack after ride:  small homemade fruit/nut bar; a handful of shredded coconut

Meal 3:  Chicken breast with lemon pepper seasoning cooked in coconut oil; butternut squash and sweet potato chunks roasted in Olio Buon Gustaio (Habernaros chili, horseradish & red chili in garlic olive oil), sugar snap peas.

Speaking of non Tri races, there is an open water 2.4 mile race in July called the Peaks to Portland. Any of the NE peeps wanna do it? I would consider it, but I am not sure if I could be ready for it. Might be good for all you IM folks. I could be your kayak spotter. Here is the link:

Wait...... people swim when you don't get to bike and run afterwards.  Biking and running is like the carrot that gets me through swims.  It just doesn't compute for me.

The water is Maine so cold (even in the summer).  Although I do like swim only races.

He will (and the cost of your fit gets credited towards a bike if you purchase it there).  I just had a friend get fit by him and he gave her 3 bike options post-fit.

Brian is a great guy, let him know that I sent you.
