New user 431 Hingham, MA | Subject: RE: Run Less Run Faster Originally posted by lutzman Hopefully, when you finished you felt like you could run one or two more 800's and weren't totally spent. Nice work. Steve I think I will start slowing it down because I really didn't feel like I could have done one or two more. Thanks for the advice, I want to do this the right way and not get hurt. Good Luck on the race Steve!!! Thanks, James Edited by JREDFLY 2013-08-08 8:27 PM |

Subject: RE: Run Less Run Faster i was registered to participate in my 2nd sprint triathlon of the season this am- i have done this one for the last 3 years. i started getting sick - viral upper rspiratory stuff - on Friday. i was on call in hospital on Friday; it was a very busy call with no sleep. By Saturday afternoon, i was flattened. Last night felt awful with fever, chills, etc and decided not to do race this a.m. Now, I am in a funk because did not follow through with my commitment to do race. this is the first time i have signed up for a race and then not done it. I need an attitude adjustment because i am so bummed out. My tendency now would be to spiral downward and lose motivation. Does anyone know of any great motivation hints to get right back up and into the saddle? |

Regular 186 | Subject: disappointment coping Charlotte, formulate updated training goals for same race next year. I waited a year to do my one and only tri for the year (due to lack of finances at moment)....... I started to get a sprained ankle type thing flare up about 10 days before the race. My son said "stop training and just go do the race with the messed up ankle." I did the Tri.....but could run across side of a grassy hill from lake to T1......kinna bummed......i had to walk it. I had mentally prepared to NOT do that race....with the thought that next year I would bump up to the longer distance. It took me a few days to be okay with that. Its not fair any of us get sick because we take such good care of ourselves............ James How did your crusty barnacle swim go? I swam my same old 30 min OWS this morning. I want to double my distance before water gets too cold for me (below 75 prolly! ) |

I want to double my distance before water gets too cold for me (below 75 prolly! ) I think I had an epiphany at my crusty barnicle swim this moring. I was going to do my usual 1 mile swim down to the clock tower and back. Well on my way down I was doing my usual 60 strokes stop and stand for a second, regroup and do it again, thinking hey I really suck at this. Then on my way back I just got into this groove and I was just swimming. I said holy crap I think I got this and I just kept going till I ran out of beach. I was euphoric, the only thing I can equate this is to is riding my 2 wheeller without training wheels for the first time (this was some time ago). I hope this feeling comes back again my next time. It was totally awesome! Edited by JREDFLY 2013-08-11 5:44 PM |

New user 431 Hingham, MA | Subject: Disappointment coping Originally posted by charlotte hobbs Does anyone know of any great motivation hints to get right back up and into the saddle? My friend Ricky trained for six months for an 8 mile swim without a wetsuit (historic swim - mandatory) from Boston Light into Boston. Over the last few months he spent 3 hours every other day either in the ocean or in a pool. He did it last year and competed the race but yesterday was a different story. The water temps dropped down to 60, winds and swell were really up and he had to drop out after 5 miles from taking in too much salt water. I asked him if he would you do it again next year and his response was "I have to". Now that is inspirational!!! Edited by JREDFLY 2013-08-11 6:15 PM |

Charlotte-- I don't know what gets you motivated but here's what works for me; I need a goal. When I have a goal it gives me something to focus my energy around. With out it, I find that it becomes very easy to come up with excuses to skip out on training. So, usually, I'm on the lookout for some event that I can focus on and use to build a weekly/daily training plan. Personally, I like to have something both short term and long term. The long term goal is for the purpose of building the plan (training distances, speed, intervals, etc. building over time) while the short term goal provides the urgency to get out and train now vs. putting it off. So, maybe there is a local 10K or half marathon coming up around November or December you could set your sights on with the goal of completing a longer distance race at an easy pace? At the same time if you could plug in a late Spring triathlon for 2014 you could be thinking about the longer term goal of being ready to perform your best at the START of the tri season. There are lots of fall running events. No need to stop racing....plus you can't beat the positive karma that is generated with the shared pain of an athletic event. Hang in there. Steve |

Regular 1126 East Wenatchee, Washington | Subject: Sprint Nationals Race Report Hey Grey Guys/Girls: I hope you all had a terrific weekend. I finished up my race this morning in Milwaukee and now I'm flying back to Seattle on the late night flight. Once I get to Seattle I connect on a commuter flight to my home in Wenatchee...arriving after midnight. Work tomorrow will be a . All things considered, I had a pretty good race. I placed 15th in my age group (out of 64 finishers). Overall, I was 219th out of over 1100 male finishers. As I mentioned earlier, it's quite a competitive field at the Age Group Nationals and my goal going in was 20th in my age group based on the USAT rankings of the other racers. My swim was solid (for me) at 12:58 (17th). T1 was weak as I had wetsuit removal issues and I lost a little time here. My bike was decent at 33:43 (16th) and my run was solid at 21:07 (12th). I think I've still got room to get faster by improving my swim. And I can hopefully take a little time off my bike and run legs as well. The best part is the top 18 finishers qualify for Team USA are are invited to compete at the Sprint Age Group World Championships in 2014. When I started training for this season in late December, my stretch goal was to qualify for Worlds, so I feel great about hitting my big objective for the year. Of course, I'll get my butt kicked at World's, but I love competition and the challenge alone will provide motivation to keep me training hard going into next year. I've probably got one more triathlon this season on Labor Day weekend. I haven't signed up yet, so I may skip it and re-focus the training for the Duathlon Nationals in Tucson which are the end of October. Hope your training is going well! Summer is wrapping up. Finish strong! Steve |

Regular 1126 East Wenatchee, Washington | Subject: RE: Sprint Nationals Race Report Originally posted by charlotte hobbs Steve, Congratulations! What an insprirational story - 15th in your AG. Awesome! where will the world sprint race be in 2014? Hey Charlotte: The Triathlon Olympic and Sprint World Championships are in North America in 2014 and 2015...so there has been a lot of interest as it will be a lot less expensive for U.S. athletes to participate over the next two years. 2014 will be in Edmonton, Canada in late August. 2015 Worlds will be in Chicago, which will be an absolute gas. The fact that the World Championship races were planned for N. America got me inspired because I knew the cost would be lower and competing in the event could really be done as a long weekend. Last year the Worlds were in New Zealand...which is a pretty expensive trip and probably requires at least a week of travel to get acclimated. Qualifying for Chicago 2015 will be at the Milwaukee Age Group Nationals next summer (sometime in August). The Sprint distance race is open to everyone (unlike the Olympic which requires qualification) so all you have to do is send in your money to enter. So, anyone can start training right now to compete in Milwaukee next year for a spot on Team USA at the Chicago World Championship. Hope to see you in Milwaukee! Steve |

I am at Freeport beach texas running on the beach this week. tagged along with friends that rented a beach house and i got the couch. 730 AM is wayyyy to late to run. I drank most of my water before I finished my warm up. Tomorrow should be better I will start a lot earlier and bring twice as much water. Brought my swim stuff but its surf too rough for me to swim . it exceeds my ability. JAMES....Last time i did my same old OWS that I do twice a week................................. I had a similar ah- ha moment. My strokes were slow long and even and I had none of the distraction I deal with at the pool. My short term goal for swimming is to do a thirty min. OWS and get out of the water feeling like I didnt do anything..ie ready to hammer down on the bike and run. |

ANYONE can race in the Sprint Nationals, so you can start training now for 2014 in Milwaukee! Below is the video link. Not only that, I actually got to make an on screen appearance in the video! You'll see me talking about sprint races about 30 seconds into the video. I'm on camera for a total of about 3 seconds, but the voice over is a little longer. Hope to see you next year in Milwaukee! http://www.usatriathlon.org/events/usat/2013/08/sprint-national-cha... Steve |

Official BT Coach 18500 Indianapolis, Indiana | Subject: Been gone a while! I want to say thank you to those of you that sent me a private note asking if everything was alright. Yes, indeed, everything is going well. I signed a new client that has offices in several western states. A couple of my engineers and I have been traveling, trying to get all the branch offices up to our technical standards. To say I have been busy is to say there is a lot of water in the ocean. I have been able to keep up with training, with the exception of swimming. Thank goodness for the above average exercise bikes at LA Fitness. Basically, I would not book a hotel unless there was an LA Fitness within running distance. Haven't been in the pool in a few weeks but not overly concerned with that given that swimming is kind of my first language. It is AMAZING what happens when you are gone for a few days - Steve qualifies for Worlds! Originally posted by lutzman The best part is the top 18 finishers qualify for Team USA are are invited to compete at the Sprint Age Group World Championships in 2014. Steve! Worlds!?! Seriously?!? Congratulations!!! That makes all the time and pain training in dark places worth it! Oh, and Steve, your swim is just fine. Really! Just leave it as it is so when we meet up at an event next year I have a chance! James becomes a swimmer! Originally posted by JREDFLY Then on my way back I just got into this groove and I was just swimming. I said holy crap I think I got this and I just kept going . . . When you are ready to launch your "Swimming by James" website, just give me a call! I know a guy that can help you get the site going. Good job man, with every minute you spend in the water, the swim will become easier and you will become faster. Keep up the good work! Everyone else I know I have overlooked things that the rest of you did. Truly it isn't intentional. Trying to catch up with a few weeks of posts, and then formulate responses is beyond me right now. Tomorrow Tomorrow is about a swimming pool, a BBQ, the kids, and the grandkids. Not necessarily in that order. No training, no phone, no fax, no computer - Just family and hangin' out. Have a good Sunday everyone! Thank you again to those that sent notes. Edited by k9car363 2013-08-17 7:44 PM |

Regular 1126 East Wenatchee, Washington | Subject: Tuesday Track Workout Hi Gang: I hit the track this morning with the Run Wenatchee crew. We had a pretty nice track session. Nothing to hard, but good speed. The working went as follows: One mile warm-up Drills--high knees, butt kicks, side strides and a few push ups Main Set: 3 X 300 at 5K pace with 100 walking recovery of 1 minute 3 X 400 at 5k pace with 100 walking recovery of 2 minutes 2 X 600 starting at 10K pace and building to 5K pace for the last 200 One mile cool down. So, there was not a lot of distance here. And the recovery allowed for strong interval performance. For me, I was running the 300's averaging about 1:05, the 400's at about 1:25. I didn't time the 600's, just ran! I left the track feeling like I had a lot of energy left which is good sign...if you finish up the session totally whipped, the pace/intervals were too aggressive. I've got a bit of post workout knee pain, so I'm icing as I write, but I don't think it's anything serious; just one of the joys of being a gray guy athlete! Pool workout at lunch. Kick it! Steve |

It could happen! It is a nice bike although it is a couple more pennies than a Trek SC9. I am looking forward to seeing the geometry numbers. I can almost picture myself riding around the block on that. It is still a while before I need to make a high end bike decision but I figure the people that are getting Kona spots are probably all on super bikes of one type or another. |
