Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by strikyr No workout today for me I was going to get a swim in today but I was way too tired to do it so my exercise for the day was taking the dog out for a walk. I hate missing workouts but I have to give myself a pass today. I didn't get much sleep last week and it finally caught up with me. On another note which you guys might find amusing is that the DEC caught an alligator in the one of the river's here where I am doing my Oly in two weeks. Apparently someone had them illegally and 5 of them escaped or where just let loose, they caught the 4 little ones right away but they just caught this one after a week and it wasn't small it was like 4 feet long. The funny thing was they caught it like 25 yards where the DEC's conservation office was. I'm not sure if that is so reassuring or not but I am hoping they have accounted for them all. Yikes! At least they got them before the tri! We finally put the boat in the water on Friday and my son wanted me to jump in and take him to shore to play in the mud. I was putting my toes in the water when I hear him scream SNAKE! It was maybe 5 feet long and swimming straight for the boat, my husband had to move or I swear it was going to climb in with us! Needless to say, I skipped the OWS that day. |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED I'm having fun reading about all of your races! We leave for our family vacation tomorrow morning so I'm planning to catch up on all the race reports in the van during the 11 hour drive to Oklahoma. We are going to stop and visit with my sister and her family for a few days then head to Fort Worth Texas, my son wants to see some REAL cowboys . The things you do for your kids, I'd much rather be heading to the beach somewhere.
I'm not sure how much training I'll be able to manage this time. I'm not bringing my bike and trainer along like I did for our Disney trip last year. The hotel has a pool and fitness room though so we'll see. We're also bringing the chihuahua so I guess I'll be getting in a lot of walking. By the way, I figured out chihuahuas aren't made for jogging......
I had a really bad spell with my back/glute/hip last week. I was having a lot of discomfort to the point I called in for a refill of muscle relaxers (and I HATE taking those) and started talking to my husband about going to see a specialist or something. But for the last few days I have been doing my PT exercises and icing it again and I am really happy to say I have seen a lot of improvement. I even managed a short ride with the tri bike on the trainer last night and still feel good today. Fingers crossed. I was talking to my sister last night and she has been going to the chiropractor for back issues. He noticed she throws her hip out when bending or lifting. That comment really stayed with me and I noticed I do the same thing. She is supposed to work on strengthening her quads so I thought I might as well do the same. Last night I did some squats on my fitness ball and my legs are sore today - pathetic. I believe that I absolutely HAVE to start making time for strength work even if that means letting go of some swim/bike/run. I may only race 2 or 3 times all year but living with back pain every day is getting really old. I'm still on the hunt for a different road bike. Not having much luck as I can't find any shops so far that have small sizes in stock that I can try out. They all take me to the catalog and show me pictures then talk about how they will custom fit the bike to me blah blah blah. I've already looked at pictures on the internet, I'm in the shop to see the real deal. Frustrating. |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Hey Junkie Gang - just checking in quickly after being gone the last several days. Awesome racing this weekend! I'll get caught up reading race reports after I get unpacked, laundry, housework and bookkeeping done. Oh, the life of a woman.
So everyone knows, the swim WAS longer than last year for MATT so he did super-d-duper! It was great seeing him. For only the second time in my tri life, my family watched my entire race this weekend. My husbands comment - "it doesn't seem like you're really running very fast". Yep, honey, you got that right.
Have a terrific Tuesday everyone!

Hmmm... maybe I should be grateful that I have been by myself on most of my races. The few times my husband has seen me swim he has let me know how much of a turtle I look like. |

Veteran 454 Cairo, GA | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED So I attempted a quick 35 minutee tempo run last night after work (while my husband took my girls to gymnastics). It was 93°F freaking degrees (for the Canadian - that's like 34° C) outside and humid. The first 18 minutes was going well going into the breeze, but then when I turned around there was no breeze and the run back was stupid and ridiculous. I swore I had to be running sub 8-minute miles, cause I was ready to throw up. As people drove by me I noticed that they were watching me.... I thought they were probably admiring the fact that I was out there running after work..... they were more likely slowing down to see whether or not that idiot running in 93° heat was going to collapse and need medical attention. I survived my run. When all was said and done, I ended up running a 10:07 pace. Maybe running in the eat will help me develop a little extra mental grit. Happy Tuesday Junkies! |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Karl welcome back and glad to see you get some swimming and running in. Those gators don't belong up here in NY too cold for those guys and I'm not sure what people are thinking when the think they can be pets. Dina have a safe trip and enjoy your vacation. I hope you are feeling better as well. Brenda I had to laugh at your post, yep that would pretty much describe me as well. I don't just look slow I am slow lol. Jen yes running in the heat will make you mentally tough but you really need to be careful with that. Slowing your pace down and making sure you stay hydrated are important as you know. I'm ok with the heat but hate the humidity but I made it a point to run a lot last season in the heat and the humidity just so I'd be better acclimated and I think it helped. Thanks to all for posting the race reports as well. |

Pro 3804 Seacoast, NH! | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Dina, have a great time and don't worry too much about your workouts. I think getting a lot of good walking in is a great idea. You have to address the hip/leg issue and this week will probably help that a bit. Brenda...I hear ya. Everyone runs faster than me. I have learned to ebrace it and hate it at the same time. Jen, I feel ya girl. Whenever it gets hot out I run without a shirt on. It's great into the wind because I'm a tall guy and the surface area cools me down when I'm sweating, but when I turn around and have no wind, all the sweat just heats up and feels like it's coating you (mostly because it is). In these cases, I usually bring two small fuel belt bottles. I carry them in my hands. They are pretty light anway. So I all but freeze one of them before hand and use that one to squirt myself in the face every once in a while. Makes a HUGE difference. Edited by jgerbodegrant 2013-06-18 11:02 AM |

Master 2327 Columbia, TN | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Hi everybody. I'm back from the dead! My vacation is over and so is my 2 weeks of nice, plentiful sleep! I wonder if chronic long-term sleep deprivation has been a contributing factor in my breakdown at the Southeast championships? After skipping the race that was scheduled for me that following weekend I did the road tri (.9miles/16miles/4miles) that I had been planning. In that race I did fine. I PR'd the course (but wasn't there last year). My bike splits have been faster in past years, as my bike hasn't improved in perhaps 4 years it seems. My run was faster. My swim was OK. And an OK swim is really rare for me, so I'll take it. A couple of friends of mine were the female #1 and #2 there. That was fun. They both chicked me...but in my defense, even #2 was faster than the previous course record. I was 4th in my AG. One of those ahead of me beat me for the first time, but he's been on an incredible trajectory. We started the swim sequentially (time trial start) so only a few seconds separated us there. We left transition close to each other and during the first 2 miles of the bike I reeled him in. I passed him and figured that would be it. He's a very strong rider, but I expected to beat him. Well, he passed me back, then me, then him and we kept leap frogging probably 5 times during the bike. But as we neared transition he surged hard while I eased up and prepared to run. That didn't work out for me because he even outran me. I was only a minute behind a man who is a bit of a local legend as one of the stoutest age groupers in the area. My closest finish to him ever. Super great competition showed up this year at this race. It seems to be a theme everywhere I race....I will do better than last year and place further back. It's like everyone better than me is looking at my race calendar and showing up just to beat me! Well, then I went on vacation to my Dad's place with my son Evan. During the week there I made 2 road trips (1 hr drive) to Eureka Springs, AR to study the Xterra course there. During those 2 trips I learned the course, the tricky parts, the lines to take, the length of the climbs...there was a river crossing. Well, let's call it a creek. It was deep enough to be over the hubs and bottom bracket on the bike and about 12 feet across. My first attempt through it was tentative and slow because I wasn't sure if the bottom was going to be soft and suck my wheels. I slipped out on rocks and had to put a foot down. After that I rode through it fast but failed to make it up the far bank. The 3rd time I sprinted up to speed and hit that creek with fury! Water came up over my hips but I had momentum to carry up the far bank. This course was ALL rocks. No soil! Not exaggerating. Those mtns are covered in rock fragments from years of weathering and plants struggling to find hold. But I did find a rhythm and learned how much traction I had and managed to figure out how to ride the broken rock ledges down as well as the sharp turns then the steep uphills over rocks...I was stoked for race day. The swim was 2 waves, which I really appreciated after getting gang raped at my first Xterra this season. My age group was in the 2nd wave. This lake was shallow enough that out in the middle I could stand up, but sank in to 1' deep muck. You could see the seaweed growing up from the bottom to just around where your fingers reached. There was floating algae and even a section of Lilly pads to swim through. This freaked out a lot of people, but didn't bother me one bit. It was wetsuit legal by a few degrees so it was nice to have the crutch of a wetsuit. The advertised distance was 800 meters, but I think it was closer to 900. Looks like there were 76 starters in the longer race (there was also a shorter version). My swim ranked 13 OA which is really good for me if you know me...I was doing well on the bike until halfway through the 2nd lap when I flatted...I don't race with flat repair because my risk/reward analysis says it's not worth it. I think that for Xterra I'm going to change that. I walked for about 45 minutes to get out and retired. I was riding well and picking up steam too...I'm not the only one. I think at least 8 people flatted out of this race. Including a guy I walked with who gave up after his third flat of the day. Remember the rocks? All rocks. Some of them sharp...and it rained really good that night and morning making things slick. It seems as through that water changed something about the rocks and the tires...Live and learn. So walking in my cycling shoes without socks al that time wore a hole right through the skin on my heel...big open wound...ouch. |

Master 2327 Columbia, TN | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED The following weekend Evan and I went to Boonville, IN for the Scales Lake Xterra. It's only 3.5 hrs from my house. As we drove up there I saw large fields of flat land. It's the Indiana Dirk talks about! Why had I heard about hills at this course? Perhaps because it's flat landers thinking that a bump is a hill? Well, I'm no geologist, but for some reason this park consists of land that is deeply cut with ravines. Seems like no climbs were over 50 feet, but they were all so steep you'd have trouble WALKING up them. I got there Thursday around 3pm and Evan and I set up camp (tent and all!) and proceeded to go check out the bike course. We get started and within a quarter mile we come to a steep uphill. No real obstacles on the hill, but a sharp 90 degree turn leading to the bottom, so no momentum. I proceed to try to get up the hill only to find that I spun out my tire and have to put a foot down. There's nothing much I can do about that. If my tire spins out, I can try leaning back further, but only to the point that my front wheel begins to float in the air. then it's just limited by reality. Around the next bend is another up hill. I charged at this one, and made it nearly to the top when I spun out again. I put a foot down, but it was so steep I found myself falling backwards with a foot still clipped in. Somehow I managed, as I was falling back, to pull the bike around with me and almost succeeded in jumping on for a downhill ride (think a 180 on a skateboard ramp) but couldn't quite pull It off. Evan had followed me halfway up the hill before he had to step down and yes....I fell right over the poor kid and took him out in a big pile of bikes and boys.... Well, he was OK and we continued on while I began to hate the course. He followed me for about 4.5 miles of the course before he caught the main road back to the campsite. I proceeded to ride. Well, on the 2nd day of riding, I did 3 laps and on my final lap I had succeeded in making all of the climbs at least once. Traction had improved slightly as the trail dried out a little more from the last rain they'd had. I also learned how to bomb the downhills super fast and shoot up the far sides without having to downshift. So I was happy about the course. My 2nd lap of that Friday took me 31 minutes and change. I had ridden hard and decided my 3rd lap would be relaxed and focus on flowing around turns without braking (as much as possible). That lap was 31 and change! That was my race strategy, finesse and not force. Well, the swim turned out to be wetsuit legal, but I think the race director took a bribe. Because my internal thermometer and everyone else's there said the water was over 80 degrees. Nonetheless I got a good warmup in that consisted of some of all 3 disciplines and I donned my wetsuit and we swam...Again there were 2 waves, but I was in the first one. Apparently there were only 55 racers in this race (again, there was a shorter version and they were mixed in with us)...but the results don't show any DNFs, so I think they may only include finishers and not all starters. But nonetheless my swim didn't SUCK. Not great, but if it doesn't SUCK, I call that good. I was 16th in the water. 11th on the bike. 14th on the run. On the bike I had some unplanned touchdowns. First time was trying to make a pass up a hill...the guy that had yielded didn't realize I was there and pulled out right in to me. My fault really. He yielded to the guy in front of me and I just assumed he knew there were 2 of us. The next time was a guy I was overtaking on a climb who was really rough. He had the wrong gear selected and was all over that hill. I would have gone by him super fast, but something about his trajectory through me off. But despite a few seconds here and there it was fine. Oh, I even went the wrong way on the last lap. I knew the course, I was just somewhere else and went the wrong way. I asked the volunteer standing at the intersection if I went the wrong way when I didn't recognize that trail. He yelled back from his vantage point "yes"....and I had to hike my bike backwards up a hill and get back on track. ;( Nonetheless my 2nd lap was a minute faster than my first lap and I felt in good shape for the run. The run started out on a road and I was moving very well. Shortly it turned in to the woods and went up a hill that just can't be 'run'. It's as steep as a ladder and just had to be walked. In fact, just about every hill there is like that. Too steep to run down, too steep to run up. So there was walking down, grabbing trees as available and walking up doing the same. But when running along the ridges I could run. I really didn't feel like I was racing though. Once again I had that feeling of survival on the run. Finished up 10th with 3rd in my AG. Not really a bad performance. And that brings us current with my races. I race again this weekend with a road sprint tri. |

Have a terrific Tuesday everyone! HA!! That's hilarious! I think you should challenge him to a foot race at the distance of your choosing and see how he responds. This is in contrast to when Kyrie (younger daughter, 16 at the time) ran through the finishing chute at Rev3 Cedar Point with me last year and said: "Dad, why are you running so fast?" I simply responded with bewilderment and asked what she was talking about. She again responded: "Why were you sprinting?" I chuckled and replied: "I wasn't sprinting. I had been running that fast for 13.1 miles!" I have to admit though, I love when kids/younger people think I'm fast or when I can put a solid throttling to them in a race or training. Bursting the "you're old and slow" bubble is pretty gratifying even if I'm not all that fast. Edited by DirkP 2013-06-18 3:35 PM |

I was pretty much on my toes reading through both of your posts and I was hoping to click on a link at the end to see your Go Pro Video highlights. Your swim has to be a whole lot better than, "Not great, but if it doesn't SUCK..." when you still place 13 OA and 16 OA in the swim. I consider it a great swim if I'm not last out of the water, and a good swim even if I was last out of the water. Sounds like you had some awesome races and your feet didn't cause much aching/pain? |

I did manage to knock 2 minutes from the run, but gained a minute on the swim. This with having what I thought was a better swim, this was the 1st race I didn't have to do the dead mans float in the middle of it. I say the distance was off from previous years, yeah thats the difference, they didn't set the course up right! It has nothing to do with me not getting in the pool until May! Haha, good job Matt. Don't discount the possibility of a swim difference. Sprints are notorious, in fact all races are, of grossly inaccurate swims. I have photographic evidence of the Timberman sprint (an Ironman event, btw, so should be top quality admin) swim being entirely different from one year to the next. In one pic we are all standing at a start buoy, in the second pic the same buoy is the first turn buoy. Of course, everyone's swim times were 2-3 minutes longer, so you could do that check to be sure. Nah, it was longer this year, take my word for it! |

Jonathan, I've seen you WITH a shirt on, so please don't run without a shirt around here. Isn't there an ordinance or something against that???? Jeff, welcome back and great to hear you slept so well. I have no doubt that lack of sleep plays a part in some of the issues you've talked about. I have to admit the best part about reading your posts was the lack of physical issues. Brenda, I agree that a challenge is in order. Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Jeff, it sounds like you had an incredible couple of weeks away from all of the hubbub, some great racing and spending time with Evan. I had seen the pics on facebook of you camping and wondered if you were at a race for the weekend. The race reports are pretty interesting! Xterra sounds like a lot of fun and some day I'll try to get into those but it'll be pretty difficult to get good training in up here in the flats. We have a reservoir that has some pretty decent trails and some hills to go with it but it's a 30 minute drive...........Yep! Just excuses...... I'm glad to see you also saw there is more than just flats in Indiana too. Southern Indiana has a lot of the terrain you described, such as rolling hills and deep cut ravines. There used to be a lot of coal mining in southwestern Indiana too. We had a coal fired power plant not to far from where you were at in Rockport (east and south a bit) and another north of there near Terre Haute. We also used to have to move a 345kV tower line for coal mining between Terre Haute and Evansville. There are actually some pretty decent hills in the southeast portion of Indiana, toward the Cincinnati area. Lastly, I am in agreement with Warren; I'm glad to hear there's no physical issues that you're dealing with again. Hopefully the lack of sleep caused some of the problems and you well rested. Oh yeah! One more thing. All of the people showing up at your races that are super fast? Maybe they have you r picture on their fridge setting up their own triathlon hit list? |

Going to spinning tonight & doing a treadmill run/walk after. In the interest of improving my mental & physical health, I've made a goal to do spinning & a treadmill run 3xs week. It has been a bit of challenge as the meds I'm on are making me fairly tired & I have to do my workouts in the evenings but I feel so much better after I do them & know they are helping me. My daughter was sick the past couple days so I still have yet to get in the pool...but I' m going to shoot for a pool workout tues, 3rd attempts a charm. I'm glad to see you keeping up with some training. Stick to the program and keep your head high. You're absolutely correct about feeling tired in the evenings. If I didn't it a workout every time I felt like resting I would never get out the door. To be able to keep your mind actively involved in setting the goals to complete the work outs you're beating the mental aspects. Each time you beat the struggle to get out and go, you're getting stronger physically but more importantly you're getting more mentally strong and capable of putting those "I'm tired" voice in a sound proof box. Keep up the good work! |

Hopefully you got some relaxing in at some point to clear your head while you were on vacation. Those races sounded pretty brutal. The steep uphills with a bunch of rocks are what kill me as well. I always find myself trying to hold the balance between slipping out the rear wheel and picking up the front tire. Warren, I was wondering why that cop kept yelling at me when I was running shirtless. I just ducked into a trail and left him in the dust....I could shake the pack of ladies though. Weird. :-) My training for our Mt. Rainier hike is going pretty well. Going to get some more steep hill repeats in with a very heavy pack today. I'd like to get a good hard hike in this weekend. Tony do you want to meet up for dinner on Saturday? The only thing is I have to eat gluten free, I found a bunch of reastaurants that accommodate let me know. JoAnne dinner sounds good and we can do whatever you want to do. Just to let you know I am probably going to go up there solo this weekend. My van is in the shop and it doesn't sound good so I won't be driving that up. Also Syracuse is not a spectator friendly race, the park is closed from 9 am to 2 pm you can't leave or get in until after 2 pm so it would be stretch for my wife to be there that long or longer with the dog. You can park in town but it is two miles from the park. I don't want her to sit around at the hotel all day waiting for me and it looks like there is not much around the hotel in walking distance either. As much as I'd like for her to go I think it would be better for her not to. She'll be taking the trip to Wisconsin though in September so if you're going to be in Madison she'll be there IM for sure. I'm planning to leave early Saturday morning and it will take me 5:30 to 6 hours to get up there. I would like to head to the park and check in and drop the bike off and I was planning to do the 3 pm mandatory athlete meeting. I would also like to spend an hour driving the bike course so at least I know what it's like since I did not get to ride it. I'll send you a message with my contact info and what my plans are so we can hook up when we get up there. Have a safe trip up and you should be getting excited not nervous! First race of the year and I am getting very excited, I can't wait to get out there and take on this course this weekend. C'mon Syracuse bring it on! Edited by strikyr 2013-06-19 8:06 AM |
