"I agree that for me (and I'm not passing judgement on anyone) if I "said" it was okay to walk, I would "allow" myself to walk more...and it's a slippery slope." - Jennifer

Our cross-country coach wouldn't let us walk during a workout unless we were recovering between intervals.  He said that once you allow yourself to walk it starts to become a habit, and you'll start walking before you are really tired.  He said it was a mental toughness thing, and we had to learn that how much our bodies could do after we felt "tired".   Not sure how true this is, but to this day I would rather cut a workout short than start walking to finish.

Like others, I walk when I hydrate since I haven't figured out how to do it without making a total mess otherwise.  And I agree that if I walk for more than just a quick drink, I have real trouble getting back to a good running pace.  Os for me it's more that I'm not sure I could get back to a good pace if I walked much.  But a very short walk break to hydrate (a few seconds really) doesn't seem to have much negative impact.

I was just interested in this running theory since he claims he has even very fast runners doing it - like some sub 3 hour marathon runners.  Seems hard to imagine.

However, I have heard that most IM marathoners walk at least part of the race, some walk a lot.

I agree with the aid station thing.  I'm not a very good runner/drinker.  I can do it early in a race, but once I'm fatigued, I need to slow to a walk or I end up gagging and only getting half the fluid down.  But that's just a few paces.

Is it Friday yet?!?!?

Hey, I got rollers last night.  I spent 5 terrifying minutes holding a chair tipping over anyway!  Does anyone here use them successfully?  I can't imagine I'll ever be able to ride these things.

FWIW - They were cheap from Nashbar, so they probably aren't a very high end version.

ROLLERS! you are brave!

as for walking - I think it's all in what your goal is - for us, we race. So, walking really isn't an option because we are after the best time we can achieve during that race. But for those who may have the goal of finishing, walking allows them to achieve their goal. I have a few friends who have done a ton of 1/2 marathons and their training is similar to the 5 on, 1 off method.

For me, if I need to walk, I walk. I figure it will help me get back the wind I have lost (like Bob mentioned earlier). but, I limit the walking because I do find it takes more to get going again. So, maybe 10 seconds.

I don't see anything wrong with walking - we are just out there for us - so no harm if you do.

but heaven for bid if I walk during the run (or even slow pedeal on the bike) in April!

Takes quite a while to get used to it, but they will help with bike handling and you can get different workouts in than you might on a trainer.

I have never tried them, but they look cool when people are riding them.  Good luck!

too scared to try rollers...you're a brave man, Warren. Despite the southern CA weather, I was actually thinking about getting a trainer since I'm a late night exerciser. I'll watch your roller progress closely to see if it makes me change my mind.

So last night was day 2 on the roller watch.  5 more minutes, which is my daily plan until I get better.  More than 5 minutes and I think my ego would never recover due to my incompetence.  Should I log those 5 minutes?  I bet my HR must reach about 300, and I'm sure it's the highest my blood pressure has ever been, including all my skydiving jumps!

Aaron's advice to set up in a doorframe was key.  My house isn't really set up to use a doorframe long term, but it worked great last night.  I actually let go and pedaled a few times!  After about 3 milliseconds I was swerving and needed the doorframe again, but I'm not giving up.  Big lesson learned last night: stare straight ahead and don't look at the front tire.

Doorframe is temporary until you get the hang. Someone once suggested putting heavy dining room/kitchen chairs on either side with the seatbacks closest to the rollers. They will still move, so I would stick with the door frame.

I am just finishing up a 'rest' week, did not feel like it but hours were cut, more sleep than normal. I think I was in a funk this week. Out of it now, feeling good.

Nice, enjoy your vacation.  We're in a monsoon up here too, flooding everywhere.

It appears that "monsoon" season may be finally over here.  The flooding was pretty crazy here too.  But the weather looks outstanding for the next week or so... low to mid 60's and no rain.  Unfortunately (or fortunately, maybe), I'm in my taper week, so I can't take full advantage of it.  And the extended forecast is saying the weather should be perfect for my race on Sunday... starting in the upper 40's at the start of the race and in the upper 50's when I finish.

I was able to do a 3.4 mi speed interval treadmill run this morning.  I ended up "tapering" quite a bit more than I anticipated.  Once again, "life" got in the way and this morning was my first "real" workout in 4 or 5 days.  But I'm still very psyched for the upcoming race!

This is my first half other than the last leg of my HIM last year.  But I was pretty spent by the time I got to the run leg, so my run time was not very impressive (02:38:33 - 12m 06s min/mile).  My goal is to knock a half hour or more off that time.

I agree after looking at Bill's logs, you'll do great.

While we're on the topic, what is the best way to run a half marathon?

Assume we have a target pace, do you start 20 seconds (or some other number) slower for 3 miles, then slowly speed up and depending how you feel hammer the last 5 miles or the last 5k?  Or is there some standard protocol to get the most out of a hardware run?

One of my half marathon goals is to do my last 5k faster than the first 5k (without tanking the first 5k Laughing ), in keeping with my general idea of pacing so that I'm finishing strong in training and racing.

I will tell you what I did.  I plugged my 5K race results (20:02) into that VDOT deal and found my approximate pace.  I knew I wanted to go between 7:00-7:15 per mile.  The slowest I would allow myself was 7:24.  The course was flat so it was easier to keep a steady pace.  The last 3-5 miles I tried to hold a faster pace.  At mile 12, I used up anything I had left.

Warren, I think your strategy of running the last 3 miles faster is a good one.  I think holding a steady pace for 8-10 miles then anything you have left you BURN!  I wouldn't run "slower' than your targeted pace though.

Everyone. Some cool videos of U23 or U18 kids warming up on them before a track race. Crazy to see.
