Fun filled weekend for me!

Friday I went and got a much-needed massage.  Every time I go, my massage therapist always talks about how he wishes he had a longer time to work on me (I think that means I'm very knotted up).  In either case, I definitely felt much better after, even if he wasn't able to hit all the spots he wanted.

Saturday was basically an all-day clinic for my marathon training program, followed by group leader training.  Once I get a chance to sit down and look at my notes, I'll see if there's anything interesting to share with everyone, in case you're interested.

Afterward, I got my bike fitted.  I found out that I crunch up my back when I ride, so the fitter kept telling me to flatten it out.  He fit me with the assumption I'd work on that.  So if I don't correct that, then the handlebars will be too far away & I'll be too stretched out.  Otherwise, the fit is pretty good!  ...Except that I apparently need to buy new handlebars since the ones on my bike are too wide.  Unfortunately the bike shop was out of the size I needed, which is fine because I already spent a lot of money on insoles for my bike shoes, and a longer stem, and a bunch of other accessories.  Oh and my crank arm is also too long, but I don't see myself replacing that any time soon Foot in mouth

Sunday, like I said, I did Udder Century.  I ended up doing the 75-mile course, and it was a good chance for me to practice my nutrition, riding in my aerobars, working on flattening out my bike like my fitter told me to do, and a little hill climbing (it wasn't overly hilly, but more so than the city of Chicago, haha).

Great race.

Don't feel bad, I fell at the end of the Udder Century.  It was at a standstill, but I still fell . . . thankful no one was around.

No raid, but I agree the winds between the 1st and 2nd stop for the 50 mile route was horrendous!!!! I was very thankful (and my back was too since I was out of the aero bars alot) that the last 20 back were mostly flat and fast.

It was a good ride and well stocked, just hate the winds.

Was taking a vote yesterday, which is worse winds or hills?  I haven't decided cuz you don't know that to expect with wind and you can't see them coming, but you can use up your fuel storage on hills . . .

I think I'd take hills over wind any day... Wind can be so unpredictable!  At least if you know your course, you can train & prepare for hills.  Plus, there's a definitely start & end to hills; not true for wind.  One girl on the course commented to me that no matter which direction we turned, there always seemed to be a headwind!  At one point, one of the volunteers commented that from that point on, the wind would be to my back.  But then about 1 mile later, the wind changed and it was blowing in my face again.  Argh!  Cross winds are tricky, too since you have to keep from tipping to one side!  Though I guess they're probably good for improving your bike handling skills.

bar92 - 2010-06-07 9:45 AM My bike ride this weekend was much better than 2 weeks ago.  Much less wind, but toward the end it got HOT.

Volunteered as a swim angel at Danskin Sunday.  That was an interesting experience.  It's a different perspective on the swim when your head is above water.

Good to hear this ride went much better!

Nice job on your Half-mary Michelle!!! Tough luck with those aid stations. It rough seeing races suffer only because there are not enough volunteers.

I agree, give me hills any day.  Hills don't try to blow me off the road and they have to end sometime.  You get stuck going into a strong, pure headwind and that's one of the most demoralizing things to deal with, especially if it's for miles on end.  With a hill, yeah it hurts and burns, but you can still feel yourself making progress and know there's a summit out there somewhere.

Congrats on the beautiful hardware!!! That is quite a unique thing to give out at a race. Have you ever done the Pigman Half-ironman? I was thinking about it for next year.

carrie639 - 2010-06-06 6:30 PM I had a good weekend. Did a 5k run yesterday for a 35:19 time (which is good for me).  Problem was, 1st water stop 1.5 miles out was out of water.  Good thing I brought a small bottle . . . no water til 2.5 miles.

Did 51 miles in the Udder Century today  . . . cold in the morning, and extremely windy between 1st and 2nd rest stops, but good ride.

Legs are tight and sore.  I don't know how you all do 112 for Ironman races then go run.  I'll stick to the short stuff right now.  Have my first true triathlon next Sunday, Naperville sprint.

Nice job with your two races this weekend!!! Looking forward to how you do with your naperville one next weekend. I am planning on doing the naperville tri in august. Are you planning on doing that one at all?

Dang!  You got a 5:49 after falling in coming out of T1 AND carrying your bike around the oil spill?????  Awesome!

Good job to Neal as well on getting the hardware!

Thanks! You should of heard some of the comments about the oil spill, most of them involved something with BP in it, like "wow it already spread this far north"

Congrats on the hardware Neal
I had my duathlon this morning... considering the limited training I was able to do over the last few months, I did not expected a miracle.....but the weather was perfect (overcast, light wind and perfect temperature), I felt great and was able to finish almost one minute faster than last year. Race report will be available later this week.
Luc

Nice job Luc!! Considering you said you didn't train as much, that is exciting to see you PR'd still!

I've done the Pigman HIM the past two summers.  It's a nice well run smaller race (~500 people).  The course isn't overly difficult, can be a good place to PR if the weather cooperates.  Last year we had a torrential downpour with 30mph winds.  I was really surprised they sent us out on the bike course.  Hopefully we sucked up 3 or 4 years worth of bad weather in that one so they have clear races in the future

Very cool!  I have a super speedy friend who is doing branson this year.  He did a 4:43 in his first at the Pigman last year in the aforementioned crappy weather conditions so I'm guessing he'll have a shot at a Clearwater spot.

I haven't decided yet.  Either the Naperville sprint tri of the Bangs Lake aquabike (which was my first race every last year).

Is that August Naperville tri that same as the one I am doing this weekend?  Centennial beach, flat and fast run and bike?

So I heard on the radio this morning (not that it means anything at this point) that it may be in the 90's this weekend . . . arrrggghhh, for my first race.  The last couple of weekends I have done 5k's it has been in 78-80 degress and very humid, so to me felt very hot.

What adjustments would you guys make/recommend if it is supposed to be hotter than anticipated?  I am NOT a good heat runner at all.  The hotter I get the worse I do.  I don't want to have to walk, that would really upset me . . .

Carrie, we've had temps in the 90s for a while now and this weekend the temp felt like it was 102.  If it's hotter than you are use to, slow down your pace and make sure to hydrate well.  If you only drink water, think about adding some gatorade or something to replace the lost electrolytes.  If you train by HR, be aware that heat will have an effect on your HR.  Racing in the heat is hard, but if you are smart, you can do it.

Carrie, I echo what Bri says.  Heat will have an impact on your pace.  Realizing that and using a good hydration strategy during the race is key.  Also key is making sure you are WELL hydrated before the race.  Suck it down in the days leading up to the race like you've never done before.  You will lose a lot of fluids during the race--you don't want to go into the race in a hydration deficit.

Good luck!  You'll do great!
